Silversea Luxury Cruises A TANGIER

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Tangier, Morocco

Set on the Maghreb coast, Tangier is Africa’s outstretched hand to Europe. With its bustling markets and lively waterfront, this city on Morroco's north is an energetic and invigorating place and an exciting immersion into an incredible continent. The location, on the highly strategic narrowing of the Strait of Gibraltar, made Tangier a vital Phoenician trading town - and the resulting city is an invigorating mesh of cultures and curiosities. View more

Part of the fun of Tangier is the well-rehearsed dance, as you dodge good-natured hawkers, and this is certainly a place to stroll with confidence and purpose. Delve into the mayhem of the walled Medina of Tangier for a rush of stimulation, as bartering and bantering echoes along the tight alleys. Crowded, noisy and busy, you’ll be sold to with a smile as you wander between stands of colourful spices, dried fruits and fabrics in this authentic Moroccan marketplace. Refresh and escape the sun with a fresh orange juice - or a sip of mint tea. Close to the city, you can find the Caves of Hercules, a coastal hollow that opens at both ends. The Phoenicians cut a window in the shape of the African continent, which reveals views of the Atlantic's waves, and legend says Hercules rested within its confines. From Tangier, you can also venture inland to the Rif Mountains, where gorgeous Chefchaouen - a village of bright blue alleyways - waits. Punctuated by blooming flowers, the entire town is a beautiful, moulded artwork of colour, spilling down the mountain like a waterfall.

Excursiones en TANGIER

Asilah, the Pearl of Morocco

Experience the stunning natural beauty and storied past of the 'Pearl of Morocco' during this scenic and informative, full-day sightseeing excursion.

Tangier, Hercules Cave

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the Hercules Cave, which has two openings; one to sea, and one to land. The sea opening is known as the 'Map of Africa'; it is believed that the Phoenicians created the sea opening which is in the shape of Africa when looked at from the sea. There are also some markings on the wall in the shape of eyes, which are said to be made by the Phoenicians, and make up a map of the local area. The cave itself is part natural, and part man-made. The man-made part was used by Berber people to cut stone wheels from the walls and make millstones, thus expanding the cave considerably. Inhabited during prehistoric times, all the limestone has long since been extracted to make milestones.

Asilah Town

Next, drive to the town of Asilah, situated approximately one hour from Tangier on the north-western tip of Morocco's Atlantic coast. Throughout history, this small, coastal city has been coveted by both Portugal and Spain, and thus has been a longstanding scene of great bloodshed. Fortunately, on your visit today, discover that Asilah's history has a kinder side as well. The city is renowned for its enormous cultural and artistic contribution to Morocco's history. Every summer, the International Festival of Asilah attracts thousands of people from all over the world.

Old Town, Walking Tour, Beaches, Mediterranean Houses, Asilah Golf Club, Lunch

Upon arrival, learn about the fascinating history of Asilah and explore this beautiful seaside resort during a guided stroll through the narrow streets of the Old Town. Asilah was first populated in 1500 B.C. by the Phoenicians, who used it as trading port. The Portuguese era began in the 15th century, and finished in 1692 when the city was liberated and returned to Morocco. Today, Asilah is one of the most popular resort cities on Morocco's Atlantic coast, especially during the summer, with so many deserted and quiet beaches, Mediterranean houses, museums, and street-artists from around the world. Following your visit, re-board your coach and proceed for a Moroccan lunch at the Asilah Golf Club. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier.

Chefchaouen, the charming Blue City

Discover one of the most beautiful old cities in Morocco during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion to Chefchaouen.

Tangier, Medina, Kasbah of Chefchaouen, Ethnographic Museum

The Kasbah of Chefchaouen is fairly simple, and without architectural surprises; however it is surrounded by lovely exterior and interior gardens. Upon entering the Old Kasbah, visit the Ethnographic Museum to view displays of antique weapons, musical instruments and photographs of the Old Town.

Plaza Uta el-Hammam, Free Time, Grand Mosque, Lunch

Next, visit the cobbled main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Here, some free time is made available for independent exploration and an exterior visit to the striking, 15th-century Grand Mosque. The Grand Mosque and its nearby buildings were built by Jewish refugees, who, alongside Muslims, escaped Spanish persecution in Chefchaouen. Until the Spanish arrived in the 1920s, this town remained isolated except for three western men who snuck in. Your tour concludes with lunch at a local venue offering a stunning view of Chefchaouen. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 2.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Following your visit, proceed to the Blue Door Hotel.

Tangier, Saint Andrew's Church

Depart the pier in Morocco for the short drive to the magnificent, Moorish-style Saint Andrew's Church. Completed in 1890 on land granted to the government of Queen Victoria's Great Britain by Sultan Hassan, the interior of this Anglican Church is decorated in high Fassi style, with the Lord's Prayer in Arabic over the altar. The exquisite ceiling of the chancel, made up of hundreds of small pieces of cedar wood, and the alcove at the east end of the church behind the nave is carved with texts from the Koran, reminiscent of the 'mihrab' of a mosque. It is, to our knowledge, the only Christian church in the world with references to the Koran. An authentic tribute to the harmony of Christianity and Islam, this iconic church also serves as a cemetery for American soldiers.

Mosque of the Kasbah, Continental Hotel, Refreshments, Beni Idir Quarter

Next, re-board your coach and drive to the Mosque of the Kasbah district for an external visit. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the Medina of Tangier. Leaving the Mosque of the Kasbah, continue on to a dead-end street off the Rue des Synagogues in the Beni Idir Quarter of the Tangier Medina.

Moshe Nahon Synagogue and Museum, Continental Hotel, Refreshments

Upon arrival, a visit is made to the Moshe Nahon Synagogue, one of the most beautiful synagogues in Morocco. Constructed during the 19th century by its namesake, a prominent educator and scholar from an influential Jewish family in Tangier, the synagogue is elaborately decorated in an Andalusian style, and its carved, stucco walls decorated with a repeating motif featuring ornamental embedded columns, tri-lobe arches, and Arabesques with floral and geometric motifs. Perhaps most remarkable is the Arabic calligraphy, repeated in three medallions vertically-aligned below the superior lobe. Indulge your senses with the splendid beauty, landmarks and culture of Tangier during a scenic, half-day sightseeing excursion to this fascinating Moroccan city.

Tangier, Kasbah

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Kasbah. Upon arrival, walk through Bab Haha and enter the Kasbah on Place du Mechouar. The Kasbah area is spread across the highest point of the Medina. Your guide leads you on the uphill walk, whilst pointing out special buildings and suggesting good places for photos in areas largely unchanged since the Roman times. The Kasbah was the traditional residence of the Sultan and his harem, and is now one of the most fashionable residential areas of Tangier. It is a quieter quarter than the other areas of the city.

American Legation Museum, Displays, George Washington Letter

During a guided stroll through the Kasbah, your first stop is at the American Legation. The first American public property outside the United States in Africa, the American Legation is now a museum that traces the history of the relationship between the United States and Morocco. As Morocco was one of the first countries to recognize America's independence, the United States established its legation in Tangier in 1821. It is the only historical monument to have remained in American possession since the birth of the American nation. Amongst a number of displays here is a letter from George Washington to Moulay Abdellah.

Grand Socco Souk, Saint Andrew's Church, Villa de France Hotel, Refreshment Stop

Next, continue on-foot down the hill to the bustling souk, Grand Socco, home to a cavalcade of colour, charm, street musicians, a fish market, scenic handicrafts, and spices. The Grand Socco is a local hub, and the link between the Medina and the New City. Following your visit, re-board your coach and drive to the magnificent Saint Andrew's Church. Completed in 1890 on land granted by Sultan Hassan, the interior of this Anglican Church is decorated in high Fassi style, with the Lord's Prayer in Arabic over the altar. An authentic tribute to the harmony of Christianity and Islam, this iconic church also serves as a cemetery for American soldiers. Following your visit, a short walk takes you to the 5-star Villa de France Hotel. After a refreshment stop here, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

The town features a fort, squares, mosques, fountains, taverns, and one of the King's palaces. Upon arrival at Tetouan, a visit is made to the Bab Akla School of Traditional Arts and Crafts.

Bab Akla School of Traditional Arts and Crafts

Tetouan's famous School of Plastic Arts, the first of its kind in Morocco, has produced some of Morocco's best painters over the past half-century, and keeps these traditional art forms alive in the modern world. The city stands out for the beauty of her traditional arts, including embroidery, cuisine, zullayj (mosaics), and carved-and-painted wooden objects. The scholars of the school are all children that come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the skills learned here offers them a new opportunity for a chance of success for their future. Your entrance fees go directly to maintaining this wonderful initiative, and the Medina of Tetouan has inspired many of them.

Medina, Royal Palace, Bab Er-Rouah Gate

Your tour continues with a guided stroll through the Tetouan Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This traditional walled souk features many typical architectural traits related to its history, along with a multitude of different artisans plying their trades. From here, head for an exterior visit to the old Royal Palace, a 17th-century building which reflects the Hispano-Moresque architecture of that era. The palace is closed to public entry, but its ornate main gate, Bab Er-Rouah, offers some foresight as to what is beyond.

Hassan II Square, Kiosks, Fountains, Flower Boxes, Lunch, Moroccan Riad, Free Time, Shopping

Next, head to Hassan II Square, situated where the historic and modern parts of the city converge to create the heart of the town. Whilst visiting Hassan II Square, proceed for lunch at a local Moroccan Riad. After lunch, if time permits some free time is made available for independent shopping and further exploration. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.
