Excursiones en SHIMIZU

Geiko Performance & Sumpu Castle Park

Explore the history and traditions of Shizuoka and its surrounds during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Shimizu, Shizuoka Geiko Performance

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 40-minute drive to Shizuoka. Upon arrival, take in an authentic Shizuoka Geiko performance. 'Geiko' is a woman trained in the art of music, singing and dancing, often including the traditional stringed instrument, the shamisen, and various dances that celebrate the coming of changing seasons. The Geiko are also trained to move and speak elegantly, pour drinks eloquently, be charismatic and charming, and wear the kimono, complicated hairstyle and iconic white makeup with red lips.

Lunch, Sumpu Castle Park and Ruins

Next, re-board your coach and proceed for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, continue on to the Sumpu Castle Park. Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu built the castle in 1585, and lived there on two occasions. Upon arrival, proceed for a guided tour of its ruins, which hint at its former grandeur. This Edo Period castle was surrounded by moats and stone walls whose size and fortitude can still be seen among the ruins.

Higashi Gomon Gate, Tatsumi Yagura Turret, Sumi Yagura

During your tour, visit the Higashi Gomon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura Turret. The restoration of the Higashi Gomon Gate area was completed in 1996 utilising traditional Japanese carpentry techniques. It was a strategic gate with gun slits where defenders could drop stones on attackers, and archers could fire on attackers in a narrow space. The double-layered, three-story Sumi Yagura, one area of the Tatsumi Yagura, was restored in 1989. It has a unique 'L'-shaped layout, which is very rare in Japan and was crucial to the defence of the Sumpu Castle. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 50-minute drive back to the pier.

Mt Fuji Sengen Shrine and Sake Brewery tour

Explore the history, traditions and flavours of Japan during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine. Fujisan means 'Mt. Fuji' in Japanese, and this shrine was built in 27 B.C. by the emperor at that time to calm Mt. Fuji's huge eruptions. This shrine has enshrined Mt. Fuji, and was the first of the Sengen Shrines that were subsequently constructed throughout Japan. Fuji and other picturesque sights of interest.

Next, re-board your coach and head to the nearby Fuji Takasago Sake Brewery. Founded in 1831, Fuji Takasago is situated in an ideal location where Mt Fuji's groundwater is abundant for use. Today, this brewery combines traditional brewing methods with current technology to produce their sake. During your visit, take a guided tour of the facility, then proceed for a sake tasting. Afterward, you can purchase sake products to take home with you. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 70-minute drive back to the pier.

At a length of approximately 2,943 feet (about 897 metres), Horai is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's longest wooden pedestrian bridge. The Horai Bridge crosses the Oi River, a treacherous task, as the waters can often flood after heavy rains. Before the completion of the bridge, feudal lords relied on the river to protect them from attacks, but after feudal domains were abolished in 1871, local tea farmers requested the construction of the bridge to expand their trading possibilities. Floods damaged the bridge multiple times. As a result, the bridge's wooden supporting poles were replaced with concrete ones in 1965. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and photo stop.
