Silversea Luxury Cruises A RIO DE JANEIRO

RIO DE JANEIRO
RIO DE JANEIRO

Alive and pulsating with energy, Rio de Janeiro is a mesmerising whir of colour and relentless rhythm, set on one of the world’s most envied natural stages. Endless buildings flow around densely-forested mountains, rolling down to that most evocative waterfront. Watched over from afar by Christ the Redeemer’s iconic outstretched arms, beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema live up to their world-famous reputations as some of the most scenic anywhere on the planet. View more

Lie back on the golden sands to soak up the extraordinary setting - or watch on as muscled cariocas - locals - perform effortless athletic feats, during casual volleyball matches. A trip up to Rio de Janeiro’s iconic art-deco statue of Christ the Redeemer is, of course, a must do - offering an extraordinary view of the city rolling out before your eyes. You’ll also want to take a cable car to swing by the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, which juts sharply into the sky from nowhere. Brazil’s second largest city moves to an infectious samba beat, and the famous thumping Carnival floods colour and floats down its streets each year. Of course, Rio is also a city of sharp contrasts - and while the haves sun themselves on its famous beaches, oceanic favelas rise up steeply into the hills behind. Take a guided tour, led by a resident, to see the conditions inside these complex tapestries of colour and chaos first-hand. Tijuca National Park, offers easy-to-access tranquillity, immersing you in dense forestry and whopping birdsong. Later, the fiery shades of sunset spread across the sky on a cruise along Guanabara Bay, as you sail among islands emerging from the Atlantic’s rolling waves. With so much to offer, you’ll quickly learn how Rio earned its other name ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’ – The Marvellous City.

Architecture, Art & Design Tour

Explore the exquisite art, architecture and design of Brazil through the ages during this scenic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Rio de Janeiro, Centre for Brazilian Crafts (CRAB), Refreshments

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Centre for Brazilian Crafts (CRAB), an institution that safeguards, celebrates, and elevates cultural manifestation through handmade garments and objects that are part of the Brazilian heritage. Famous national designers work with these artisans to produce new articles in fashion, art and home goods. Following your guided tour and a refreshment stop at the CRAB's restaurant, walk to the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral.

Metropolitan Cathedral, Stained-Glass Windows, Museum of Modern Art (MAM)

A grand, pyramidal, brutalist structure from the prolific Modernist movement of Brazilian architectural history, the Metropolitan Cathedral is lightened by four, floor-to-ceiling, stained-glass windows depicting Biblical scenes. The project is by Edgar da Fonseca, and the interior houses many religious works of art. Leaving the Cathedral, re-board your coach for the short drive to the Museum of Modern Art (MAM). Inaugurated in 1963 and designed by Affonso Reidy, the building is a beacon of Modernist architecture and houses an important collection from national artists.

Maua Square, Benedictine Monastery, Museum of Tomorrow

Your final stop is at Maua Square. Totally renovated as part of the Olympic City project, this area is an iconic cultural symbol of Rio. During your visit, marvel at some of its oldest and newest architectural gems during exterior photo stops at the 1633 Benedictine Monastery and Museum of Tomorrow, designed by Santiago Calatrava and inaugurated in 2015. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

By using the same beans as those used in the tasting, see how each method extracts different aspects of the coffee like acidity, flavour and intensity. In addition, learn about Brazilian coffee production, how it became the 'black gold' of the 19th century, and supported a wealthy, imperial society that left a rich heritage of historical farms in the mountains of Rio and São Paulo states. Mid-Voyage Land Adventure: the Archipelago of Fernado De Noronha

350 km (217 miles) off the eastern coast of Brazil, the Archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is composed of 21 islands. The main islands are: Fernando de Noronha, Rata, Ilha do Meio, SelaGineta, Rasa, São José, Cuscuz and 14 rock formations which are practically inaccessible. The archipelago's total area is 26 square km (10 square miles) of which the main island represents 17 square km (6.5 square miles). The archipelago submerged in the Atlantic after the wake of a volcanic activity and it is actually a mountain range emerging from a depth of 4,000 meters (2.5 miles) under the sea. The ground is rocky with little depth, formed from the scattering of basalt lava and rocks. The archipelago was discovered in 1503 by Americo Vespucci during a Portuguese expedition guided by Gonçalo Coelho and financed by Fernão de Loronha. In 1504 it was donated by King Dom Manuel of Portugal to Fernão de Loronha. Due to its geographical position, many important scientific expeditions visited the island such as Darwin's, aboard the HSM Beagle, in 1832. During World War II, it became a US Air Force field as a strategic point to link to the African war front. Fernando de Noronha is an internationally known diving site. With warm and clear water, diving to depths of up to 30 to 40 meters, can be managed easily without requiring a wetsuit. From Beginners to Advanced divers, it offers sites for all levels of diving skills, including the tek wreck dives in the Ipiranga Corvette, which lies at a depth of 62 meters.

Most of the main island´s infrastructure is ruled by the Conservation and Environmental Department, as it is a National Park since1988 and was declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site in 2001 in recognition of its work towards the conservation of the nature. It includes important feeding and nursing areas for sea-reef fish, turtles, sharks, dolphins, birds as albatrosses and many other species including endangered ones. The rich fauna, above and underwater and the natural landscape - make up the archipelago's main attraction. The Park is now under the administration of ICMBIO (Conservation Dept) and Econoronha, responsible for the visiting structure inside the marine park area.

Dolphin Watching

Start at the San Antonio Port on regional boats, passing by the secondary islands of Sela Gineta, Cuscuz and then head to Ponta da Sapata, the island's easternmost edge, and return back passing in front of the Dolphin Bay (home of hundreds of dolphins living freely) and stop for a refreshing swim and some snorkeling at Sancho's Bay.

Boats are not allowed to go inside the Baía dos Golfinhos, but it is permitted to take boats in front of the bay. These tours usually provide an almost guaranteed opportunity to see the Spinner dolphins swimming and jumping around.

Fernando de Noronha is bathed by the "Outersea" (Mar de Fora) and "Innnersea" (Mar de Dentro). The Inner Sea, which isthe side of the island towards the continent, has very calm waters between April and November and between December and March it experiences some waves. The Outer Sea always has clearer visibility than the inner sea, yet dive success still greatly depends on ocean conditions and time of year.

Daily operation with modern catamaran boats. Morning, noon and night dives available.

Leading diving areas of the world - diversity of marine life (dolphins, turtles, manta rays, big groupers). Average water visibility of 25 meters and temperature is 27 degrees C all year round. Dive sites for all levels - from the beginners to the technical diver. Wrecks and caves.

Leão beach is the place with the highest concentration of Turtle nesting. Watch your step, there's usually signs pointing where the nests are. In front of the beach you'll see two big secondary islands: Leão Islands, named after its shape of a sea lion, and Viuvinha Island, named after a small bird very common at Noronha.

Forte Nossa Senhora dos Remédios

Remedios Fortress is Noronha's most important landmark and the island central Place. The most well preserved of the forts on the island, the Fortress of Our Lady of Medicines was built by the Portuguese in the 18th century, in an attempt to fortify the defensive system of the island, over the remains of a smaller Dutch fort that was built in 1646.

Praia do Cachorro

Praia do Cachorro is also known as the dog's beach. Its name comes from a former bronze fountain carved in the shape of a dog's face but this fountain no longer exists there though the name still does. Located just below the Remedios fortress, it is the most sought after beach by the local s and the tourists. The main attractions of this beach are a fresh water spring, a stone cavity for swimming called the Galego cavity, a salting stone used by the local fisher folk and the ruins of Santana fortress which is open to tourists. The waters of Praia do Cachorro wear an emerald green color covered with coral reefs underneath.

Praia do Conceicao

Nossa Sª Da Conceicao Fort on the beach was converted into a hospital during the 18th century. Later some Italians made their home on this beach while the telegraphic cables were being laid under the sea and thus the beach also got the name Italcable.

Baia dos Golfinhos

Baia do Golfinhos Bay has several names, which all names imply that it is home to dolphins. Baia do Golfinhos is a mating and resting place for some of the well-known species of dolphins. The bay comes under the jurisdiction of National Marine Park and is a highly protected area to preserve the dolphins and their territories. Access to this bay by sea is prohibited and the only way is to follow a trail leading to a 70m high cliff but it's worth the hike. This cliff is the lookout point for all the dolphin activity and you can catch them live in action. Baia do Golfinhos is home to the Spinner Dolphins. Later into the day during a boat ride you may get to see the dolphins just spinning and diving or feeding their young ones. Golfinhos bay is a sanctuary you just cannot afford to miss.

Baia do Sancho

Baia do Sancho is an expansive sand beach and tops the list of being one of the most beautiful beaches of the world after Trip Advisor (03 times). The beach is protected and surrounded by native vegetation and high rising cliffs, which makes the perfect nesting ground for birds. The sand on Baia do Sancho is white and the water is emerald green.

Cacimba do Padre

Cacimba do Padre is the post card from Noronha, a beach with light yellow sand, and two beautiful rock formations that are named Dois Irmãos (two brothers) that forms a movie scenery. The sunset at Cacimba is a must.

Tamar Project - Sea Turtles

Tamar initiated its research and conservation activities at Noronha in 1984. The Visitor Center was open in 1996. With the tourism growth in Noronha, the island has become one of the biggest National destinations for ecotourism, and Tamar decided to open the VC to attract and integrate that growing flow of people to the local environmental programs, especially those focused in marine life.

The Turtle Museum has explanatory panels, replicas from the 05 turtle species occurring in Noronha, turtle skeletons, videos and other information about the turtle's life and the main actions developed by Tamar towards its conservation.

They also have lectures, videos and other events at the Visitor Center, about the turtles and the marine life and environment of Noronha. The Project also gives the visitors the opportunity to follow the nest openings, release of sea turtles pups in the ocean and the intentional capture of turtles for tagging and research. The schedule for those activities can be found at the Visitor Center and it is open to public.

Spinner Dolphin Project

Starting in 1990, the Spinner Dolphin Project was created out of the need of conservation of the Island's Dolphins. The volunteers of the project, research and gather information about the groups they watch, and develop actions to keep the groups safe and minimize impacts of human interaction with these animals, looking for a harmonized co-existence between the animals and the tourism, in a sustainable way.
