Cooking Demonstration at Tropical Spice Garden

Explore the unique spices and flavours of Malaysia during this delightful, half-day excursion along the Penang Spice Trail.


Batu Ferringhi Beach and Teluk Bahang

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to the north side of the island. After passing beautiful Batu Ferringhi Beach, arrive at the lovely seaside district of Teluk Bahang, known as the 'Bay of Reflected Heat'. Upon arrival, head to the Tropical Spice Garden.


Tropical Spice Garden

This idyllic, eight-acre (3.23-hectare) paradise showcases a living collection of over 500 species of local and introduced flora, with an emphasis on tropical herbs and spices. Surrounded by the lush greenery, embark on a guided walking through the garden. Along the way, learn about the various spices, and their functional and medicinal uses.


Cooking Demonstration and Tasting

Next, proceed for a cooking demonstration on the preparation of a popular Malaysian dish. Using a traditional grinding stone, techniques in grinding the dried spices are displayed, and secrets on how to draw out the flavour and aroma of the spices shared. Following the cooking lesson, you are invited to sample piping hot dishes straight from the pan. Afterward, some free time is made available to browse for souvenirs in the Gift Shop before re-boarding your coach and commencing the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.


Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 383 yards (about 350 metres), at times over uneven surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. George Town Trishaw & Tea

Discover the unique blend of east and west cultures and the well-preserved buildings of George Town by coach, on foot and by trishaw on this half-day excursion. George Town a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a multicultural trading port permeating with layers of history and colourful past, attracting Arab, Chinese, Indian and British colonial settlers, which resulted in an eclectic mix of races and religions.


Chew Jetty

Depart the pier for the brief drive to the Chew Jetty, one of the Chinese clan jetties established in the 19th century by immigrant workers. A wooden settlement perched on stilts over the water allows you to walk over the narrow wooden platform and immerse yourself in the trading history of the island.


Khoo Kongsi Ancestral House

Next drive along Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling, popularly referred to as the 'road of harmony' to view various places of worship - the Anglican St. George's Church, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy Temple, the Hindu Sri Mariamman Temple and the Kapitan Keling Mosque. At the end of the road, is the impressive Khoo Clan Ancestral House. A building of great historical and cultural value, porcelain tiles cover the rooftops whilst intricate carvings decorate the walls and pillars.


Fort Cornwallis & Morning Tea

At Fort Cornwallis, the site where Capt. Francis Light first landed facing the Esplanade, experience the novelty of travelling at a leisurely pace in a trishaw to the Eastern & Oriental Hotel for morning tea. Built by the Sarkies brothers in 1885, this elegant hotel once played host to famous guests like Noel Coward, Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling.


Wat Chayamangkalaram

Your last stop is to Wat Chayamangkalaram. This temple is home to an enormous reclining Buddha that rests serenely above a floating veil of incense. Note the sculptures resembling mythical creatures guarding the entrance.


Leaving the temple, a 15-minute drive returns you to the pier.


Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, a total of approximately 700 yards (630 metres), with steps to climb. Guests must be able to climb in and out of a trishaw. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility but is not wheelchair accessible. Trishaws accommodate one guest. The trishaw portion of this tour is through the city streets of Penang and you are exposed to the elements. Wear lightweight clothing and comfortable footwear that can be easily removed; no shoes are permitted inside the Wat. You may wish to bring socks.Order of sights may vary.

Historical and Cultural of Penang

This full-day overview of Penang Island departs the port for a drive along the scenic north coast passsing Batu Ferringhi, the most popular stretch of beach on the island.

Originally named the Penang Butterfly Farm, this centre for education, recreation and scientific research is a tropical sanctuary.


Batik Factory

Visit the handicraft Batik Factory to see the traditional technique of printing cloth with wax and dye.


Lunch at Suffolk House

At the former home of Capt. Francis Light, who established the island under British rule, enjoy a set lunch at the Suffolk House Restaurant overlooking the river. One of Penang's important heritage landmarks, Suffolk House was also the home to early governors during British colonialism.


Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

The mansion's external decorations and indigo-blue outer walls makes it a very distinctive building and it is sometimes referred to as The Blue Mansion. Built by the merchant Cheong Fatt Tze at the end of the 19th century, the mansion has 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases, 220 vernacular timber louvre windows. Features of the house include Gothic louvred windors, Chinese cut and paste porcelain work, Stoke-on-Trent floor tiles made of encaustic clay in geometric pieces all shaped to fit to a perfect square, Glasgow cast iron works by MacFarlane's & Co and Art Nouveau stained glass windows



Chew Jetty

Lastly visit Chew Jetty, one of the Chinese clan jetties established in the 19th century by immigrant workers. A wooden settlement perched on stilts over the water allows you to walk over the narrow wooden platform and immerse yourself in the trading history of the island.

Tropical Spice Garden and Batik Factory

Continue on to the seaside district of Telok Bahang for a visit to the Tropical Spice Garden. The garden showcases a living collection of over 500 species of local and introduced flora, with particular emphasis on tropical herbs and spices. Surrounded by the lush greenery, learn about various spices and their functional and medicinal uses. From here, a short drive brings you to a local Batik Factory, where you can observe the traditional art of creating beautiful fabric designs using wax and dyes.


Lunch and Wat Chayamangkalaram

Following your visit, proceed to beautiful Batu Ferringhi Beach for a buffet at the Parkroyal Resort. After lunch, your last stop is at Wat Chayamangkalaram. This temple is home to the enormous Reclining Buddha, which rests serenely above a floating veil of incense and is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Note the sculptures resembling mythical creatures guarding the entrance. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Penang Hill & Temple

Embrace the scenic splendour and legacy of Penang Hill and its environs during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.


Penang Hill

Depart the pier for the short drive to Penang Hill. Located in the central part of the island, it towers approximately 2,723 feet (about 830 metres) above sea level. Penang Hill is among the oldest Colonial hill stations established by the British during their time in Malaysia in the late-18th century. Upon arrival at the foot of Penang Hill, board the funicular train for the ride to the top of the hill. Here, take in spectacular panoramic vistas over Georgetown City from the Viewing Deck which allows 360-degree stunning views.


Ayer Itam and Kek Lok Si Temple

After riding the funicular train back down the hill, proceed to the village of Ayer Itam for a guided walking tour of the Kek Lok Si Temple. Terraced against the hillside, the temple features a tortoise pond, Hall of Wisdom, the seven-tiered Pagoda and image of the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin. Listen as the guide explains the Taoist and Buddhist worshipping rituals practised by the Chinese community. Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Penang Round Island

This easy overview of Penang Island departs the port for a drive along the scenic north coast pass Batu Ferringhi, the most popular stretch of beach on the island.

Farmers Fruit Stand

Wind through fruit orchards, and see spice plantations growing clove and nutmeg. Here, make a stop at a farmer's fruit stall. The stalls are a riot of colour with their arrays of exotic tropical fruit.


The Snake Temple

Travel through the rural countryside passing idyllic Malay kampongs for the next visit of the legendary Temple of the Azure Cloud, better known as the Snake Temple. Donated in 1840 by a Scotsman cured of a disease by a local priest, the 'Temple of the Azure Cloud' is dedicated to the deity Chor Soo Kong. His disciples include the pit vipers living in the temple, rendered harmless by the clouds of incense (and mostly defanged). In the vicinity, there is also a variety of live snakes on display for the intrepid visitors.


En route back to Swettenham Pier, catch a glimpse of the Penang Bridge, one of the longest bridge in South-East Asia connecting Penang to the mainland.

Alongside your guide, head out on foot along a one-mile nature trail through The Habitat, where you'll trudge across dipterocarp forest amidst oak-laurels and tree ferns. The area's rich biodiversity encompasses more than 100 species of birds, endangered endemic plants including the Penang slipper orchid, and a multitude of fauna the likes of flying lemurs, Dusky Leaf monkeys and the Giant Black Squirrel.
