Excursiones en Naze, Amani Oshima

Canoeing in the Mangrove

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 45-minute drive to Mangrove Park. Amami Oshima has the second largest mangrove forest in Japan after that on Iriomote Island in Okinawa Prefecture. The mangroves are concentrated near the central east coast of the island and you can explore them by canoeing on guided tour with rental boats. While best experienced in high tide when more of the smaller offshoots of the river are accessible, canoeing here is a worthwhile experience in low tide, too. After a safety briefing you will embark on a one-hour canoe ride. Follow your guide on the off-shoots of the river and the mangroves.

The ocean's majesty is celebrated in your next destination as well -- a semi-submarine boat excursion. Amami Oshima is known for some of the best scuba diving in the world, and this is a great opportunity to see the coral reefs and abundant marine life up close without getting wet. From the observation deck you will see below sea level for up-close views, which are exceptional in this crystal clear water (weather permitted).

Then back to the pier

Highlight of Amami Oshima

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 60-minute drive to Cape Ayamaru. Enjoy some delightfully unspoiled scenery as you stop for photos at Cape Ayamaru -- a visual exploration of some of the island's fascinating terrain. The geological formations around Amami Oshima can be clearly seen from this location. On a clear day, the views are quite dramatic.

Then head to Amami Park. At Amami Park, discover a cultural center that welcomes many visitors to the island. An information area provides background on the wildlife, history, culture and industry of Amami, and an audiovisual entitled Jewel of the Subtropics -- the Story of Amami's Seas & Forests will introduce you to the unique flora and fauna of the region. You won't want to miss the Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art, located on the park's grounds. The museum showcases the works of one of Japan's master painters who was enamored with the beauty of Amami and spent the last 20 years of his life capturing its splendor.

Kimono, Silk & Tanaka Isson Museum

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 30-minute drive to Oshima Tsumugi Village. It is a natural garden surrounded by subtropical vegetation where you can learn the processes how Oshima tsumugi is produced from white silk thread. The facility offers a factory tour to illustrate the manufacturing process of Oshima Tsumugi textile, from the white silk threads to the final silk fabrics. The visitors can see the whole process while walking in the garden surrounded by the nature with subtropical plants and animals. The museum communicates information regarding tailoring and Japanese-style small articles.

Next, re-board your coach for the drive to Tanaka Isson Museum. Tanaka was born in Tochigi Prefecture and lived there and then in Chiba Prefecture before settling on Amami Oshima at age 50 where he created paintings of the local flora and birds. The museum dedicates one hall to each period of the painter's life, showcasing art he produced when living in that particular region. His artworks are exhibited outside Japan for the first time in Paris 2018 summer.

Nature of Amami Oshima

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 45-minute drive will take to Amami Nature Forest Observation. This forest park has a great view from the observatory and selected as an Amami Island National Park. With your local nature guide, you will have change to find rare birds, plants and insects. From the highest observatory, you can experience a panorama view including the emerald blue, Tatsugo Bay,Mt.Yuwan and Kikaijima.

Before back to the pier you will stop at Amami Cycads for photo stop. Amami Cycads grow naturally only in certain parts of China, Amami Oshima, and Okinawa. It has been utilized as boundary markers as well as windbreak plants for crops on Amami throughout history. Nowadays Amami Cycads are still incorporated into Amami cuisine in dishes such as 'nari-miso,' a type of miso that uses bits of the Sotetsu seeds.
