Silversea Luxury Cruises A NARSARSUAQ (Kujalleq)

NARSARSUAQ (Kujalleq)

With just over 150 people braving the northerly conditions to live in wonderful Narsarsuaq, a journey here is a true adventure to the north. As a former American military base known as Blue West 1, injured soldiers from the D-Day landings were flown out here for treatment. With vivid Viking history, and thrilling scenery, Narsarsuaq is Greenland at its finest. Summer here is nothing short of majestic, with golden sunshine bathing the mountains and fjords in light, and illuminating adventures through wildflower-sprinkled meadows. View more

Or, explore by kayaking across glorious lakes and ocean inlets. The Midnight Sun casts an astonishing, 24-hour glow on the landscape, and is a truly astonishing natural wonder to behold. In winter, rippling displays of colour dance across the sky, as the Northern Lights bloom above, while opportunities to explore by snowmobile, or to tempt fish from the icy depths during ice fishing expeditions abound. See chalky blue icebergs, and creeping glaciers, or sail through solid archways of spectacular natural ice formations. Chances are you’ll be lucky enough to see the waters parting, and the tails of huge whales emerging from the deep, if you do take to the ocean.

Hiking trip on the ridge

Enjoy a hike with spectacular views of the Narsarsuaq River and Glacier.

Narsarsuaq

Embark on a 3 to 4 miles (5 to 6 kilometres) hike along the ridge with a fantastic view over the valley, the Narsarsuaq River and Glacier. Follow the gravel road among small birches and willow trees. In the Hospital Valley the Americans built a hospital with 250 beds during WWII. Today only a lone chimney remains. The impressive Narsarsuaq River with melting water from the ice cap is running into the fjord. Maybe the white-tailed eagle will hover over us. Your guide will tell about the ice cap, the local glacier and life in Narsarsuaq now and then.

The tour concludes at the pier.

Please note: This tour involves extensive walking on gravel roads and paths, with a few steep ascents and descents. It is not recommended for guests who utilise a wheelchair or guests with limited mobility. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing, and good walking shoes. Bring water from the ship.

Photo tour of Qooroq Ice Fjord by Boat

Encounter up close and amazing icebergs that run around the glacial deposit and mouth of the Qooroq Fjord. This is a photo tour and is unguided.

Qooroq Ice Fjord

Sail from Narsarsuaq to the underwater moraine at the mouth of the Qooroq Ice Fjord. Many icebergs run aground on the moraine, make your way into the fjord along a tortuous path through the stranded icebergs. Behold a breathtaking sight of thousands of icebergs, sheer cliff faces and the enormous glacier. The glacier delivers about 200 thousand tons of ice at day into the fjord. Many of these icebergs have a rich turquoise colour.

In the fjord, enjoy the panorama of marvelous sights; with the motor stopped, the boat will drift quietly with the current. The absolute silence is disturbed by the sound of the icebergs, as they break free from the glacier and fall rolling and crashing into the fjord. Along the way, you will hear the mini explosions as thousand-year old air bubbles escape in the glass.

Return to Narsarsuaq after an unforgettable day.

Please note: This tour requires moderate activity with steps to get on and off the boat depending on the tide. This tour is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair or who have limited mobility. Guests are advised to dress warmly and in layers, bring a windproof jacket, a pair of gloves, a hat and your camera. This is a photo tour and is unguided. Depending on the boat used the time if excursions may vary.
