Delhi may be the capital city, but it's Mumbai that encapsulates all the dynamic, chaotic parts that make up modern India. This is where you'll find everything from succulent street food to haute cuisine, bargain-basement bazaars to the finest haute couture, humbling poverty to staggering wealth, sacred temples to hedonist nightclubs. Mumbai is India—vibrant, hectic, frustrating, enervating, and exhilarating, warts and all. Mumbai is a city of extremes, where slum-dwelling strivers making dollars a day serve Bollywood stars and industrial billionaires. View more

It's a 24-hour city stocked with some of the best late-night street food in the world, as well as fine-dining restaurants of renowned chefs. It's a cosmopolitan city of people from all over India that's nonetheless home to strident parochialism. It's a city of dreams for millions of Indians that, at the same time, affords so few any measure of comfort. And it's a beautiful city of silver towers when viewed by twilight from the new Bandra-Worli Sea Link bridge over the Arabian Sea that connects the Western suburbs to the city, but which quickly descends into a maze of winding—often dirty—streets and alleys when viewed up close. Sensory overload is the name of the game on the island formerly known as Bombay (and yes, many locals still call it by its previous moniker). The first thing that hits you when you arrive at the airport is the smell—spicy, fishy, and, to be honest, often not altogether pleasant. Next comes a crazed cab ride through the seemingly lawless streets (should your driver run a red light or, just as likely, drive on the wrong side of the road, remain calm). Then a traffic jam in the midst of a veritable symphony of honking, in which barefoot children, often holding infants, and tragically disfigured men and women knock at your window, begging for change. Persevere through, though; embrace and try to understand the natural hazards of the Third World, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a vibrant, often beautiful city. There's plenty to see in Mumbai, but it's not generally in the form of stationary monuments like those in London, Paris, or Delhi. The art of experiencing Mumbai lies in eating, shopping, and wandering through the strikingly different neighborhoods and the various markets. Think of Mumbai as a 50-km (30-mile) -long open-air bazaar. Colaba, headed by Gateway of India, is the tourist district and main drag for visitors, and from the Gateway of India to Colaba Market, along the main road, is a walkable stretch of hotels, pubs, restaurants, and interesting shops. Churchgate and Nariman Point are the business and hotel centers, and major bank and airline headquarters are clustered in skyscrapers on Nariman Point. The district referred to as Fort—which includes Mumbai's hub, Flora Fountain—is filled with narrow, bustling streets lined with small shops and office buildings, as well as colleges and other educational facilities. Another upscale residential neighborhood, Malabar Hill, north of Churchgate on Marine Drive, is leafy and breezy, with fine, old stone mansions housing wealthy industrialists and government ministers. Shopping and people-watching are most colorfully combined in Mumbai's chaotic bazaar areas, such as Chor Bazaar, Zaveri (jewelry) Bazaar, and Crawford Market (aka Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market). Many of the city's newest and trendiest shops and restaurants are now out in the suburbs—where more and more people have been moving due to soaring real-estate prices and a lack of space—but South Mumbai still retains some of the very best. Some travelers opt to stay in the suburbs, either in Bandra, at the end of the new Bandra-Worli Sea Link, or in Juhu, a popular coastal suburb between Mumbai and the airports (about 20 km [12 miles] north of the city center). Juhu's beaches aren't clean enough for swimming, and the place can be scruffy, but staying out here is a good way to observe everyday Indian life beyond the shadow of Mumbai's skyline. Sunday nights bring families down to the beach for an old-fashioned carnival, complete with small, hand-powered Ferris wheels, and lantern-lit snack stalls hawking sugarcane.

A Jaunt with Mumbai's Superheroes - Dabbawalas

Brace yourself for an interesting day outing - an experience you won't be able to duplicate anywhere else! Spend your day with Mumbai's superheroes - the Dabbawalas, members of the Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association. Every day 5,000 of them deliver fresh, home-cooked food from 200,000 suburban kitchens to offices in the downtown area. Each lunch is prepared by a loving wife or mother, and packed into a set of stackable aluminium boxes. The meals are carried to their hungry recipients dangling from shoulder-poles and bicycle handlebars, and stacked on decorated handcarts. Tins are rarely, if ever, lost, and always find their way home again to be washed up for the next day's lunch.

You will shadow one of these superheroes today. Pick up a tiffin from a local home for delivery; help sort tiffins; walk to a railway station and brave a local train where you get the chance to interact with some other members of the association; sort again and pick and deliver freshly-cooked home food along with some smiles.

After a day's hard work and having learnt tricks of the trade, a tiffin lunch awaits you at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel!

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1.12 miles (1.8 kilometers) over paved surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 15 steps at the train station and 6 steps at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing and sunscreen, glasses and a hat are recommended. It is also recommended to carry a bottle of water at all times due to the heat. Kindly note: along with the Dabba-wala guests will travel in the luggage compartment of the local train. There are just a few seats in each compartment and therefore guests will have to stand through the approximately 15-20 minutes journey. The tour is led a local expert and not a licensed guide.

An Enchanted Evening in Mumbai

Experience the spectacular city of Mumbai at night during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion with dinner.

Gateway of India & Chowpatty Beach

Depart the pier for a scenic, approximately 75-minute sightseeing drive through Mumbai. Along the way, pass by a wide array of beautifully-lit monuments. See the city's most famous landmark, the Gateway of India, an Indo-Saracenic archway built in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. Continue along Mumbai's seaside promenade, Marine Drive, an eight-lane highway with a wide pavement. Its graceful curve sweeps from the skyscrapers at Nariman Point to the foot of Malabar Hill. As the sun sets and the city is illuminated, it becomes a glittering necklace of a million lights. At the northern end of the drive is Chowpatty Beach, a Mumbai institution that comes to life at night.

Victoria Terminus

Next, pass by the Victoria Terminus, a railway station built during Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee year and inspired by St. Pancras Station in London. It is an extraordinary conglomeration of domes, spires, Corinthian columns and minarets. The first train in India departed from this station in April 1853; today, a half-million commuters use the station every day.

Taj Mahal Palace Hotel & Dinner

Following your sightseeing drive, proceed for a traditional Indian dinner at Masala Kraft, the Indian speciality restaurant inside the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Your meal is created with freshly-ground spices and culinary innovations blended with traditional cooking and preparation methods. After dinner, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and six steps at the Taj Mahal Hotel. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair accessible.

Please dress conservatively when going ashore. As a rule, women should not wear anything remotely revealing (miniskirts, shorts, capris, beachwear, and sleeveless or low-cut tops), and men should always wear a shirt and trousers in public. Coaches and guides are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Marvels of Mumbai

Gateway of India and Prince of Wales Museum

Now a permanent museum and memorial to the Mahatma, Mani Bhavan contains a research library of more than 20,000 volumes, along with personal artefacts, photos and letters. Gandhi's sitting room/bedroom is preserved behind glass.

Your tour continues with a photo stop at Dhobi Ghat, an impressive operation where tons of clothing from all over Mumbai are laundered, pressed and bundled before being returned to their owners. During the 40-minute drive back to the pier, pass by the Victoria Terminus, a remarkable railway station built during the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Inspired by St. Pancras Station in London, the Victoria Terminus features impressive domes, spires, Corinthian columns and minarets, and serves a half-million commuters daily.

Mumbai's Temples

Explore the Hindu religion and its influences in depth during this scenic and informative, half-day tour of the temples of Mumbai.

Flower Market

Depart the pier for a visit to a bustling local flower market. Upon arrival, experience an abundance of colourful flowers and the cacophony of sellers and buyers. This temporary market comes alive as early as 4 a.m. and disappears by 9 a.m. Orange and red marigolds, white champa and pink lotuses are all sold here. During your visit, pick a garland of your own to be offered to the gods at the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple.

Shri Siddhivinayak Temple

Next, re-board your coach and proceed for a visit to the historic Shri Siddhivinayak Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god. Inside is a figure of Ganesh that is visible from any point within the temple. One of Hinduism's most popular gods, Ganesh is revered as the remover of obstacles, and his name is invoked before every undertaking. The image of Ganesh is often placed above gateways, and in shops and houses.

Isckon Temple

Your tour concludes with a visit to the Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple, an ISKCON temple. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, these temples are a tribute to Srila Parabhupada's perseverance to spread the Krishna consciousness. ISKCON comprises more than 400 temples worldwide, 40 rural communities and over 100 vegetarian restaurants. It also conducts special projects throughout the world, including 'Food for Life', the only free vegetarian relief programme in the world.

Following your visit, re-board your coach for the approximate 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.8 miles (approximately 1.3 kilometres) over mostly paved surfaces with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 20 steps at the ISCKON Temple and 3 steps at the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Sun protection, sunglasses and a hat recommended. Proper attire is required to visit the sacred sites; shorts and short skirts are not permitted, and women must cover their shoulders. Shoes must be removed prior to entering the temples. Bring along a thick pair of socks, as the pavement may be hot. At some sites, depending on traffic and parking conditions, it may be necessary to cross busy streets. Expect crowds and lines at the sites visited; the temples can be especially crowded on Tuesdays and Sundays. There is a 10-minute walk to access the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple. Roads at the flower market are muddy and dirty. Photography is not permitted inside the temples. Vehicles used are the best available in the city, they will not be of the same standard as vehicles found in Western countries.

Shades of Mumbai

Experience the scenic beauty and landmarks of Mumbai in a unique new way during a full-day, excursion through this bustling city.

Train Ride & Dhobi Ghat

Depart the pier for the brief drive to Church Gate Station, then board a local train for the ride to Mahalakshmi Station. Upon arrival, walk to the local laundry, Dhobi Ghat, an impressive operation where tons of clothing from all over Mumbai are laundered, pressed and bundled before being returned to their owners. After a photo stop at Dhobi Ghat, drive past the Haji Ali Shrine and the racecourse en route to Khotachiwadi.

Khotachiwadi

Situated in the heart of the city, this urban village features an eclectic blend of new homes and 18th-century Portuguese houses. During your guided walking tour, a visit is made to an old restored home belonging to a local resident. Inside, view a collection of antiques and exemplary examples of traditional teak furniture. From here, re-board your coach and drive to the Crawford Market.

Crawford Market & The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

A blend of Flemish and Norman architecture, the market has a bas-relief above its main entrance and a frieze designed by Lockyard Kipling, father of the famous Rudyard Kipling; the Kipling's' cottage still stands in the market. Crawford Market looks like something out of Victorian London, with its sweet smell of hay, mountains of fresh fruits and vegetables, and a 50-foot-high (15-metre-high) sky-lit awning. Leaving the market, proceed for a buffet lunch at the historic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Mani Bhavan

After lunch, a visit is made to Mani Bhavan, Gandhi's Bombay base between 1917 and 1934. It is now a permanent museum and memorial to the Mahatma. The walls are covered with photos of historic events and noteworthy people and there are a number of personal artefacts - including a letter to Hitler asking him not to go to war, and correspondence with Roosevelt, Tolstoy, and Einstein. Gandhi's sitting room/bedroom is preserved behind glass.

Following your visit, re-board the coach for the brief drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) over mostly paved surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 4 steps at Church Gate Station, 30 steps at Mahalakshmi Station, 6 steps at The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and 35 steps at Mani Bhawan. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, walking shoes, sun protection, sunglasses and a hat are recommended. At some sites, depending on traffic and parking conditions, it may be necessary to cross busy streets. Sites may also be crowded and guests need to exercise caution. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment. Photography is prohibited at the local railway stations.

The Caves of Elephanta

Explore the ancient beauty and art of India during this scenic, half-day tour to the Caves of Elephanta.

Gateway of India

Depart the pier for the brief drive to the Gateway of India. The city's most famous landmark, this Indo-Saracenic archway was built in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. Upon arrival board the boat for the brief ride to the serene and densely-forested Elephanta Island.

Elephanta Island

Over 1,000 years ago, Hindu craftsmen excavated caves in the volcanic rock high up on the slope, depicting their beliefs in elegant, massive carvings. The Elephanta Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was probably created during the 8th century A.D., though the caves may have had earlier Buddhist origins. From the landing area, walk up the long stairway to the top of the hill. In front of the main cave is a veranda with a pillar carved in one of the various manifestations of Shiva at each end.

Elephanta Caves

Upon entering the cave, see magnificent sculptures featuring various manifestations of Shiva. Included are Shiva as Nataraj, Lord of the Cosmic Dance, a powerful bust of Trimurti, the three-faced Shiva, Shiva bringing the Ganges River to earth, Shiva crushing the demon Andhaka, and Shiva with his consort, Parvati. Following your visit, walk back down to the landing area and embark your boat for the ride back to the Gateway of India.

Your tour concludes with a brief transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.2 miles (about 1.9 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 125 steps at Elephanta Island. This tour is not suitable for guests with claustrophobia, guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, non-slip walking shoes, and bring sun protection from the ship. Expect crowds and lines at the sites visited; the caves are particularly crowded on Sundays. Videography is prohibited inside the caves, and a current charge of INR 25 is required for videography outside the caves. Sedan chairs are available for guests to go up to the entrance of the caves at their own expense. There is no scheduled shopping stop; guests can shop from the stalls along the walking route at the caves. Guests should carry some local currency for the camera fee, sedan chairs, etc. Guests should be advised of pesky hawkers around the boat landing area. The tour duration may vary due to pier activity and tides.

This tour is for disembarking guests who wish to go to The Oberoi/ Trident Nariman Point Hotel.

Experience the highlights of Mumbai during a scenic, half-day orientation tour of this fascinating city.

Gateway of India and Prince of Wales Museum

Depart the pier for the brief drive to the Gateway of India. The city's most famous landmark, this Indo-Saracenic archway was built in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.

After a photo stop here, visit the Prince of Wales Museum, which is crowned by a white Mughal-style dome. Upon arrival, view jade work, weapons from the Mughal Empire, clay and terracotta figures from the 3rd century B.C., Greek-influenced 4th- and 5th-century heads and figures, superb Indian paintings, illustrated manuscripts, and exquisite miniatures.

Marine Drive and Mani Bhavan

Next, proceed along Marine Drive, Mumbai's seaside promenade. Its graceful curve sweeps from the skyscrapers at Nariman Point to the foot of Malabar Hill. At the northern end is the lively Chowpatty Beach, a Mumbai institution. From here, a visit is made to Mani Bhavan, Gandhi's Bombay base between 1917 and 1934. Now a permanent museum and memorial to the Mahatma, Mani Bhavan contains a research library of more than 20,000 volumes, along with personal artefacts, photos and letters. Gandhi's sitting room/bedroom is preserved behind glass.

Dhobi Ghat and Victoria Terminus

Your tour continues with a photo stop at Dhobi Ghat, an impressive operation where tons of clothing from all over Mumbai are laundered, pressed and bundled before being returned to their owners. During the 40-minute drive back to the pier, pass by the Victoria Terminus, a remarkable railway station built during the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Inspired by St. Pancras Station in London, the Victoria Terminus features impressive domes, spires, Corinthian columns and minarets, and serves a half-million commuters daily.

DAY ONE - Mumbai/Delhi

Depart the ship and transfer to Mumbai airport for a scheduled, approximately two-hour flight to Delhi. Upon arrival, you are met and taken to The Taj Mahal Hotel for lunch. The Taj Mahal Hotel, New Delhi is nestled in the bustling heart of New Delhi, and combines elegant, old-world luxury with the most modern amenities.

New Delhi, Lutyen's Delhi, War Memorial Arch, Raipath, Presidential House

After lunch, depart for a guided orientation tour of New Delhi. Along the way, drive through 'Lutyens' Delhi'. Commissioned in 1911 and inaugurated as recently as 1931, this magnificently-planned area of Delhi is an architectural combination of British and Indian architecture. From here, travel past the War Memorial Arch, better known as the 'India Gate', then drive down Rajpath and past the Presidential House.

Humayun's Tomb, Sikh Temple

Next, a visit is made to Humayun's Tomb, a magnificent monument built in red sandstone by Haji Begum, Humayun's first wife and mother of Emperor Akbar. Her design was way ahead of its time, and is the basis for the design of the famous Taj Mahal, built almost a hundred years later. Leaving Humayun's Tomb, re-board your coach and proceed for a visit to a Sikh temple. Following your visit, re-board your coach and drive back to the hotel for check-in.

Dinner and overnight at The Taj Mahal Hotel - New Delhi.

DAY TWO - Delhi/Agra

After breakfast at the hotel, board a coach for the scenic, approximately 3.5-hourd drive to Agra, with a comfort stop en route. Agra was the capital of the Mughal dynasties in the 16th century and 17th centuries, and repository of many of the Mughals' most famous monuments. The city has long astonished visitors with sites dating back to the Mughal Empire.

Agra Fort

Upon arrival in Agra, a visit is made to the Agra Fort, the town's second-most important attraction after the Taj Mahal. This massive fort's 1.5 mile-long (about 2.5 km-long), red sandstone walls contained the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It is comprised of fairy-tale palaces, audience halls and two beautiful mosques. Founded in the 16th century, the vast complex underwent many additions by subsequent rulers. Here, Shah Jehan was held captive by his son, and spent his days gazing out from his room towards the Taj Mahal across the river. Following your visit, re-board your coach and proceed to your hotel for lunch and check-in, followed by some free time at your leisure.

Sunset Taj Majal Visit

In the late-afternoon, depart for a special sunset visit to the Taj Mahal, Shah Jehan's enduring monument to love. This beautiful mausoleum of pure white marble is an architectural marvel of astonishing beauty, and offers a breath-taking image as soon as you emerge from the arched entry gateway. Emperor Shah Jehan, fifth of the great Mughals, was devoted to his wife Mumtaz Mahal (Jewel of the Palace). She died at the age of 39 giving birth to her 14th child. He resolved to build his wife a memorial surpassing anything the world had ever seen in terms of beauty and extravagance. Twenty-thousand labourers and skilled craftsmen from Persia, Turkey, France and Italy were put into action to construct this unrivalled masterpiece. The rays of the setting sun make this monument a wonder to behold. You can enter the mausoleum, and stroll around the extensive grounds. Following your visit, re-board your coach for the drive back to the hotel.

Dinner and overnight at The Oberoi Amarvilas - Agra.

DAY THREE - Agra/Delhi/Colombo

Depart for an early-morning visit to the Taj Mahal, and a sunrise view of the magnificent, world-renowned mausoleum. The most unusual story about the Taj is that there might have been two of them. The Emperor intended to build a second tomb in black marble, a negative image of the white Taj for his wife, Mumtaz. Tragically, before he could begin, he was deposed by his son and imprisoned in the Agra Fort, where he remained until his death, spending the rest of his life looking out along the river to the final resting-place of his wife. Shah Jehan and Mumtaz Mahal are now both buried in the underground chamber of the Taj Mahal.

Sunrise Taj Mahal

The rays of the rising sun that await you at the Taj Mahal are truly awe-inspiring. You can enter the mausoleum, and take a stroll around the extensive grounds. Following your visit, re-board your coach and drive back to the hotel.

After breakfast at the hotel, depart for the approximately 3.5-hour drive back to Delhi. After lunch at a local hotel, transfer to the airport for your evening flight to Colombo. Dinner is served in-flight. Upon arrival, transfer to the Taj Samudra for check-in.

Overnight at the Taj Samudra - Colombo.

DAY FOUR - Colombo

After breakfast at the hotel, depart for an orientation tour of Colombo. Along the way, drive past the commercial district of the city, and through Pettah's bazaar area. The views are more peaceful as you drive past Vihara Mahadevi Park, now renamed after a Sinhalese queen. It was formerly known as Victoria Park, when originally created by the British as a botanical garden for tropical species. Across the street is the imposing, neo-Classical Town Hall.

National Museum, King of Kandy Regalia Collection

Next, delve deeper into this culture during a visit to the elegant, white, colonnaded National Museum (closed on full-moon days and national holidays). View the fascinating and sometimes scary mask collection, which has its share of demons, including Prince Maha Kola, wearing a diadem of interwoven snakes. Another gallery contains a display of outstanding Hindu and Buddhist bronzes. One group of statuettes is connected with the cult of Shiva, and includes a fine sculpture of Shiva as 'lord of the dance'. Some of the images are mobile; not intended to be worshipped in the most sacred places, but destined for ritual processions around the temple or through the streets of the town. The museum also houses a collection of the regalia of the King of Kandy.

Gangarama Temple

Your final stop is at the bustling Gangarama Temple, the nicest and most intimate of all Buddhist temples in Colombo. At the conclusion of your visit, transfer to the pier and embark the ship.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking, at times over uneven, cobblestone and gravel surfaces, with many steps to climb at Humanyun's Tomb, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Colombo National Museum, and Gangarama Temple. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The driving distance between Delhi and Agra is approximately 3-3.5 hours in each direction. Coaches, guides and equipment are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions. Pack lightly; the luggage weight restriction is limited to 33 pounds (about 15 kilograms). Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Proper attire is required to enter the temples; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. Shoe covers are provided at the Taj Mahal to enter the mausoleum.
