Silversea Luxury Cruises A LITTLE BAY (Monserrat)

LITTLE BAY (Monserrat)

Nicknamed the “Pompeii of the Caribbean” due to the strong volcanic activities of the Island throughout the nineties, Montserrat still bears in some of its lands the layers of ash. However, you would be wrong to overlook the island. Indeed, Little Bay, deemed as the island’s new capital, encloses many hidden creeks and beautiful, off-the-beaten-path beaches which are definitely worth a detour. Sit back and relish the surroundings in an area that will soon be in the spotlight of Caribbean ecotourism.

ATV Adventure Tour

Experience the island of Montserrat and aftermath of its volcanic eruptions along the path less-travelled during this exciting, off-road ATV excursion.

Little Bay, Isles Bay Hill, Guided ATV Tour

Depart the pier for the short drive to Isles Bay Hill, the starting point for your scenic and exhilarating ATV adventure. Upon arrival, receive your safety and riding instructions and familiarise yourself with your ATV, then begin your guided ATV tour.

Belham Ghaut, Volcanic Mud Flows, Estate Ruins, Corkhill Road, Corkhill Cricket Grounds

From Isles Bay, your guide leads you down Belham Ghaut, now transformed by volcanic mud flows. From here, pass by uninhabited areas with once-stately homes now ruined by volcanic ash, acid rain and neglect. Your route continues along the abandoned Corkhill Road en route to the once-splendid Corkhill Cricket Grounds.

Geothermal Project, Weekes Road, Richmond Hill, Montserrat Springs Hotel, 'Buried City'

Next, take in our Geothermal Project as you make your way to Weekes Road, then on to Richmond Hill for a brief stop at the ruins of the Montserrat Springs Hotel. Upon arrival, proceed to the hotel's viewing platform for a bird's-eye view of Plymouth, the 'Buried City', and its environs. Leaving the hotel, re-board your ATV and return to Isles Bay Hill. Upon arrival, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Buried City and Woodlands Beach

Explore how the historic volcanic activity of Montserrat altered life on the island during this panoramic, half-day 'Buried City' excursion.

Little Bay, Brades, Salem, Runaway Ghaut

Depart the pier for the short drive through Brades and on to Salem. En route, discover the continually changing face of the local villages as we continue to carry out construction in our desire to reclaim our country. Your first stop is Runaway Ghaut. Local lore has it that a sip from the natural spring here ensures your return to Montserrat.

Richmond Hill, Montserrat Springs Hotel, Plymouth, the 'Buried City'.

Next, begin your 'Buried City' tour with a drive to Richmond Hill and a stop at the Montserrat Springs Hotel. Upon arrival, proceed to the hotel's viewing platform for a bird's-eye view of Plymouth, the 'Buried City', and its environs. Leaving the hotel, proceed for a visit to the 'Buried City' itself, where ample photo opportunities await your arrival. Standing on what was once our deep-water harbour, behold what is now the tallest mountain of Montserrat, where our schools, business, homes and churches once stood. During your visit, your guide shares very personal volcano stories and points out places where their lives used to happen.

Woodlands Beach Facility, Sunbathing, Beachcombing, Swimming, Lunch, Caribbean Music

Your last stop is at the Woodlands Beach Facility. Upon arrival, you can relax, unwind and soak up the tropical sun, take a dip in the inviting, crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, or just relax with lunch, a glass of our famous rum punch and some Caribbean music. Before you leave, you can browse for souvenirs of your visit. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Coastal Boat Tour

Experience the 'Buried City' from a unique perspective during this panoramic coastal boating excursion.

Little Bay, Boat-Ride, Montserrat, Soufriere Hills Volcano, Plymouth City Ruins

Depart the pier for a leisurely boat-ride along the shore, and see the 'Buried City' of Plymouth from a different vantage point. Plymouth was the capital city Montserrat, and, for centuries, the only port of entry to the island. Constructed on historical lava deposits near the then-inactive Soufriere Hills Volcano, the town was evacuated when the volcano resumed erupting in 1995. Plymouth was abandoned permanently in 1997 after it was burnt, and mostly-buried, by a series of pyroclastic flows and lahars, or destructive mudflows, on the slopes of the volcano.

Coastal Villas, St. Patrick's Village Ruins, Huge Deltas, Expanded Beaches

After passing by Plymouth, see luxurious coastal villas en route to the village of St. Patrick's, now nothing more than volcanic rubble. You can ask Captain Buffy to stop and allow you to capture the power of Mother Nature on your camera. View the huge, newly-formed deltas and expanded beaches that the volcano created along the coastline, adding many square miles/kilometres to the island. Your coastal boat-ride concludes back at the pier.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory and Botanical Gardens

In July 1995, Montserrat's Soufrière Hills volcano erupted after being asleep for hundreds of years, burying Plymouth, the island's capital. Over 39 feet of mud and ash devastated the southern part of the island. The area was evacuated, and even now, police permission must be received before anyone can enter the exclusion zone where the volcanic activity occurred. Discover why the Soufriere Hills Volcano makes Montserrat such a unique island during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Little Bay, Montserrat Volcanic Observatory, Volcanic Explosion Video, Buried City View, Souvenir

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Volcano Observatory. Upon arrival, experience first-hand what an active volcano is like during a 25-minute movie highlighting the events that occurred during the 22 years of volcanic eruptions on Montserrat. If a resident scientist or staff is available, you may get answers to your volcanic questions. A viewing platform at the Volcanic Observatory offers a glimpse of the 'Buried City' of Plymouth. A volcanic souvenir of your visit is included.

National Trust, Amerindian Garden Tour, Gift Shop, Hilltop Coffee House & Family Centre

Next, continue on to the Trust Gardens. At the National Trust take a guided tour of the Amerindian Garden. At the Gift Shop, you can purchase your own copy of the Montserrat Cookbook, or Birds and Other Endemic Species of Montserrat. At the Hilltop Coffee House & Family Centre, you can enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee, latte or juice, enjoy volcanic stories from your host, David, and purchase your own video copy of The Price of Paradise.

Little Bay, Cassava Ghaut, Nature Trek, Nature Trails, Centre Hills, Montserrat Oriole, Photos

Depart the pier for the short drive to Cassava Ghaut. Leaving the port, observe the newly-built, post-earthquake construction en route. Upon arrival at Cassava Ghaut, begin your guided trek along nature trails and hills en route to Runaway Ghaut. Along the way, experience the flora and fauna of the Centre Hills, see the National Bird, the Montserrat Oriole, and be prepared for the many splendid photo opportunities the Central Hills has to offer. View your surrounds with the naked eye, or enhance your experience with the latest binoculars and telescopes.

Runaway Ghaut, Volcanic Observatory, Volcano Video, Montserrat Springs Hotel, 'Buried City' View

Next, re-board your coach at Runaway Ghaut for the drive to the nearby Montserrat Volcanic Observatory. Upon arrival, view a 25-minute movie highlighting the events that occurred during the 22 years of volcanic eruptions on Montserrat. Leaving the Observatory, re-board your coach and head to Richmond Hill for a stop at the Montserrat Springs Hotel. Upon arrival, proceed to the hotel's viewing platform for a bird's-eye view of Plymouth, the 'Buried City', and its environs. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach for the approximately 50-minute drive back to the pier.

Little Bay, Montserrat, Boat-Ride, Caribbean Sea, Rendezvous Beach

Depart the pier aboard an open-skiff for the short boat-ride along the Caribbean Sea en route to Rendezvous Beach, an idyllic, white-sand, desert-island beach. Whilst fellow Silversea guests may stop by on weekends for refreshments and to suit-up, the beach is almost exclusively people-free on weekdays.

Beach Picnic, White-Sand Beach, Sunbathing, Beachcombing, Swimming, Return Boat-Ride

Upon arrival and after a wet landing, begin your secluded beach picnic. You can relax and unwind on a beach chair, soak up the tropical sun whilst sipping a rum punch, have a bite to eat whenever you feel like it, take a stroll on the white-sand beach, and/or swim in the inviting blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Everything's included in the price of this tour, and a guide is on-hand to cater to your needs. At the conclusion of your sun-drenched beach picnic, re-board your boat and commence the short ride back to the pier.

Snorkelling and Kayak Adventure

Discover the coastal and undersea splendour of Montserrat in an active new way during this exciting, half-day snorkelling and kayaking excursion.

Little Bay, Montserrat

After receiving your safety and kayaking instructions and equipment at the pier, embark your 'sit-on-top' ocean kayak and begin your guided, approximately 55-minute kayaking adventure along coastal Montserrat. This beautiful volcanic island is blessed with diverse coral reefs, which abound with interesting and colourful tropical fish and marine life.

Kayaking, Bat Caves, Fruit Bats

A short kayak-ride along the shoreline takes you to the island's famous bat caves, a unique and fascinating way to experience the fruit bat in its native environment. The bat caves are partially-submerged crevices that house these special flying mammals, which offer a chorus of bat chirps that greet your entrance into the cave. Thousands of fruit bats hang upside down from the walls and ceiling of these fabulous caves; one cave houses the females and their young, and the other cave houses the males. The caves offer the fruit bats a protected environment from the devastating hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and droughts that have impacted the island for the past three decades.

Rendezvous Beach, Snorkelling, Coral Reefs, Tropical Fish, Marine Life, White-Sand Beach, Cliffs

Next, paddle over to nearby Rendezvous Beach. Upon arrival, disembark your kayak and don your snorkelling gear for a guided snorkelling session. Along the way, explore the coral reefs that are home to the tropical fish and marine life of this lush Caribbean island. Afterward, some free time is made available to relax on the white-sand beach, swim in the crystal-clear waters and/or explore the cliffs above the beach. At the conclusion of your visit, embark your kayak and commence the short ride back to the pier.
