Silversea Luxury Cruises A HONG KONG

HONG KONG

The Hong Kong Island skyline, with its ever-growing number of skyscrapers, speaks to ambition and money. Paris, London, even New York were centuries in the making, while Hong Kong's towers, bright lights, and glitzy shopping emporia weren't yet part of the urban scene when many of the young investment bankers who fuel one of the world's leading financial centers were born. Commerce is concentrated in the glittering high-rises of Central, tucked between Victoria Harbor and forested peaks on Hong Kong Island's north shore. View more

While it's easy to think all the bright lights are the sum of today's Hong Kong, you need only walk or board a tram for the short jaunt west into Western to discover a side of Hong Kong that is more traditionally Chinese but no less high-energy. You'll discover the real Hong Kong to the east of Central, too, in Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, and beyond. Amid the residential towers are restaurants, shopping malls, bars, convention centers, a nice smattering of museums, and—depending on fate and the horse you wager on—one of Hong Kong's luckiest or unluckiest spots, the Happy Valley Racecourse. Kowloon sprawls across a generous swath of the Chinese mainland across Victoria Harbour from Central. Tsim Sha Tsui, at the tip of Kowloon peninsula, is packed with glitzy shops, first-rate museums, and eye-popping views of the skyline across the water. Just to the north are the teeming market streets of Mong Kok and in the dense residential neighborhoods beyond, two of Hong Kong's most enchanting spiritual sights, Wong Tai Sin Temple and Chi Lin Nunnery. As you navigate this huge metropolis (easy to do on the excellent transportation network), keep in mind that streets are usually numbered odd on one side, even on the other. There's no baseline for street numbers and no block-based numbering system, but street signs indicate building numbers for any given block.

Explore some of Hong Kong's most popular historic landmarks during this half-day orientation tour of the city.

Depart the pier for the drive across the harbour via the sub-ocean tunnel, and on to Hong Kong Island. Your scenic orientation tour begins with a visit to Victoria Peak.

Victoria Peak

From Garden Road, a tram takes you for the five-minute ride uphill to the 1,300-foot (396-metre) Victoria Peak. After taking in spectacular views and photo opportunities of Hong Kong and Kowloon, board a coach for the drive downhill. Next, your drive continues on to Aberdeen via Deep Water Bay.

Aberdeen

Upon arrival, a sampan boat ride provides a fascinating look at this floating settlement. As you glide along the city's oldest harbour, your cruise takes you past houseboats, fishing sampans and floating restaurants. At the end of the cruise, re-board your coach for the ride to the Stanley Market via Repulse Bay.

Stanley Market

Once a fishing village, Stanley Market has earned a reputation as a paradise for bargain hunters as well as for its interesting scenery. The narrow lanes are lined with small shops selling the latest in fashion clothing, such as overruns of designer jeans and sportswear, leather and silk clothing in Western sizes. In addition, a good selection of souvenir items can be found here.

During your visit, you can stroll around the market and perhaps make a few purchases. Serious shoppers will want to return and explore the market at their leisure.

Leaving Stanley Market, your tour concludes with a brief drive back to the port.

Please note: This tour, available only to guests continuing on from the previous cruise, a moderate amount of walking, with some stairs to climb and guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach and boat via steps. Glimpse of Hong Kong

Explore the splendid local landmarks, markets and sights of Hong Kong during a panoramic, half-day excursion to this bustling city.

Victoria Peak

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Victoria Peak. Also named Tai Ping Shan, or 'Mountain of Great Piece', Victoria Peak is visited by millions of tourists and locals every year, mainly for the breath-taking panoramic views of the city and harbour, but also because of the numerous interesting walks that begin here. After your photo stop, re-board your coach and head to the Tin Hau Temple.

Tin Hau Temple

Tin Hau, which means 'Goddess of the Sea', is revered by fishermen and anyone whose life and destiny is tied to the sea. Temples that honour her are found in abundance in Chinese coastal communities throughout Asia, and Hong Kong is no exception. The location of this particular temple in the middle of an urban area might strike you as rather odd, but you can learn why during a guided walking tour. Leaving the Tin Hau Temple, proceed on-foot to the nearby Wet Food Market.

Wet Food Market and Jade Market

These markets are windows into a vivid and timeless world of food shopping that refuses to be extinguished by modern supermarkets. Of all the wet markets in the city, this one abounds with bustling stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood. During your visit, experience the sights and sounds of this lively, old-school market in full swing. Afterward, continue on-foot to the renowned Jade Market. Here, hawkers sell various shades and qualities of this precious stone. To the Chinese, jade has great spiritual value for warding off evil. When carved into certain shapes, it can represent wealth (deer), good fortune (tiger) and power (dragon). Guests are reminded not to purchase expensive jade unless accompanied by an expert. Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about one kilometre), with a few high steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. DAY 3 - GUILIN

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting out for a scenic cruise on the renowned Li River. Have your camera ready for photos of the uniquely shaped limestone peaks, verdant bamboo groves, and idyllic views along the way. The portion of the river you see has been called a "one-hundred-mile natural art gallery." A buffet lunch is served onboard the cruise.

Disembark the vessel at Yangshuo and spend some time enjoying the scenic and quiet countryside. This glimpse of Southern China's country life shows you the flora, fauna, rice paddies and small bridges which are rarely visited by tourists.

From this idyllic setting, board your transportation for a closer look at country life. The fields, the water buffalos, the zigzag lanes and the fresh air allow you escape from the noisy metropolis. Your visit includes a stop at the Yulong River Scenic Area. The Chinese word 'Yulong' refers to 'meeting a dragon'. Local legend has it that a dragon from the East Sea strolled across the Yulong River and, being deeply impressed by the attractive landscape, decided to stay there forever. The villagers living on the river bank saw the dragon several times, and hence the river is so named. The languid river is surrounded by a primitive, but pure, natural landscape, combined with green bamboo forests and rolling hills.

Return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon. Take a moment to freshen up before dinner at a local restaurant. Return to the hotel at the end of your meal for a well-deserved nights rest.

DAY 4 - GUILIN / HONG KONG

Following breakfast at the hotel, check out of the hotel and start for the airport with a few interesting sites enroute. First stop is Reed Flute Cave, named after the stand of bamboo near its entrance that were used to craft flutes. Inside the cave there are more than 70 inscriptions written in ink, which date back as far as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). These ancient inscriptions tell us that the cave has been an attraction in Guilin for over 1,200 years.

Your next stop is at Elephant Trunk Hill, located at the confluence of the Li River and Peach Blossom River. It looks like a huge elephant stretching its trunk and drinking water, hence the name. Elephant Trunk Hill is considered by many to be the symbol of Guilin and its karst landscape.

At the end of your tour, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before bidding farewell to Guilin and checking in for the flight to Hong Kong. Once there, return to the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure. Dinner is on your own account.

DAY 2 - GUILIN

DAY 3 - GUILIN/ HONG KONG

Following breakfast at the hotel, check out of the hotel and start for the airport with a few interesting sites enroute.

DAY 3 - GUILIN

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting out for a scenic cruise on the renowned Li River. Have your camera ready for photos of the uniquely shaped limestone peaks, verdant bamboo groves, and idyllic views along the way.

Beijing, also known as Peking, is the capital of the People's Republic of China and one of the most populous cities in the world, with a population of 24 million as of 2018. The city is the country's political, cultural, and educational center, and home to the headquarters for most of China's largest state-owned companies. The metropolis, located in northern China, borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south, and a small section to the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the southeast.

Governed as a municipality under the direct administration of the national government, Beijing is divided into 14 urban and suburban districts and two rural counties. It is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city, and the destination of many international flights to China. Few cities in the world have served as the political and cultural center of an area as immense. Beijing is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. It has been the heart of China's history for centuries, and there is scarcely a major building of any age in Beijing that does not have at least some national historical significance. The city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and huge stone walls and gates. Its art treasures and universities have long made it a center of culture and art in China.

Known as 'Gate of Heavenly Peace', the square is dominated by a gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. Since imperial times, Tiananmen Square has always provided an impressive stage for declarations and key events in local history. In modern times, the solemn flag-raising ceremony has become a revered daily celebration. It was from the giant gate that Chairman Mao proclaimed the People's Republic on October 1, 1949.

Your next visit will be to the legendary Forbidden City. Off-limits to the public for 500 years, the vast complex of this World Heritage Site was opened in 1949 as the Palace Museum. Within its walls lies a maze of palaces built between 1417 and 1420 as the residence of China's emperors. With some 800 buildings and 9,000 rooms, maintenance and restoration are an on-going process.

After enjoy a buffet lunch in a leading hotel, proceed to visit the Summer Palace. Occupying 290 hectares of land and water, it is one of China's largest and best-preserved imperial gardens. It consists mainly of Kunming Lake of 210 hectares and Longevity Hill dotted with halls and pavilions. It served as both the living quarters for the royal families but also the place for them to conduct state affairs. Summer Palace is a paragon of Chinese royal garden. In the Palace, the manmade scenery goes well with the natural beauty, without showing any affectation. Appreciate the royal garden view while listen to the story behind the scenic spots. Major sights in the Summer Palace include the 728-meter Long Corridor and the Marble Boat moored by the lakeshore.

Then you will be transferred to the old town of Beijing to experience a hans-on cooking class. A saying that the trip to China wouldn't be complete without exploring its cuisine. But the best way to do that is by getting up close to the people who cook it. You'll pick up some important Chinese cooking techniques, learn more about the country and its food culture, and then, finally, enjoy the delicious food together. After the studying and enjoying your own product, you will be presented the recipes to take home!

DAY THREE - Beijing

After breakfast at hotel, start your day by a scenic drive out of the city. You will climb one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World" - The Great Wall of China. Located in Huairou County about 45 miles from Beijing, the Mutianyu Great Wall enjoys a long history and is part of the historic culture of China. It connects to the Juyongguan Pass in the West and the Gubeikou Great Wall in the East. The wall was first built during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550 - 557). During Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), Tan Lun and Qi Jiguang, two famous patriotic generals, rebuilt it in order to strengthen its defensive potential as they regarded it as a strategic block for national defense. It served as the Northern area's protective block, guarding the capital and imperial mausoleums for generations.

Mutianyu Great Wall runs 1.4 miles through lofty mountains and high ridges, where many sections are made of granite. The unique structure makes the wall almost indestructible. It measures 23 to 26 feet high and four to five yards wide. Both of the wall's inner and outer sides have parapets to defend against enemies coming from either side. Some parapets are saw toothed shaped structures instead of the regular rectangular form. Below the parapets, there are square embrasures at the top, which are designed by the shape of an arc structure, different from the traditional round embrasures.

There are 22 watch towers distributed at close intervals along the wall. They are located not only in the main wall but also at the distinctive 'branch cities'. Branch cities are built on the hill ridge against the inner or outer side of the wall. They measure from several yards to dozens of yards across. On the Northwest over 3,281-feet high, lies a section of the wall called 'Ox Horn Edge'. On the steep and lofty peaks, there are two walls named 'Flying Eagle Flies Facing Upward' and 'Arrow Lock.' What is more rarely seen on the Southeast side is a general gateway platform guarded by three watch towers together. In locations of strategic importance, batteries are set up to reinforce the defense capabilities. Mutianyu Great Wall really deserves to be the archetype of the Great Wall, with its impressive history as a historic strategic defense mechanism for the country. The roundtrip cable car ride (weather permitting) provides a leisurely and less strenuous way to take in the stunning scenery and the beauty of the Great Wall of China.

You will be transferred back to hotel to have a refresh and relax befor dinner.

According to a Chinese saying, no visit to this city is complete if you miss seeing the Great Wall or dining on Beijing Roast Duck (Beijing Kaoya). As a famous and delicious food with very long history, Beijing Roast Duck is an excellent choice if you want to understand more about Chinese cuisine, culture and customs. This evening you will have the opportunity to taste this unique food in Beijing Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant, one of the best restaurants serving Beijing Roast Duck. It has a history of nearly 150 years, and today there are many chain restaurants of it around the city. This evening you will have chance to enjoy authentic Peking Roast Duck in a reknowned restaurant.

Overnight accommodation at Peninsula Beijing - Beijing.

DAY FOUR - Beijing/Shanghai

After breakfast at hotel and check out, you will go to visit Temple of Heaven which is located in the Chongwen District, Beijing. Originally, this was the place where emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) held the Heaven Worship Ceremony. It is the largest and most representative existing masterpiece among China's ancient sacrificial buildings. First built in 1420, the 18th year of the reign of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), it was enlarged and rebuilt during the reigns of the Ming emperor Jiajing and the Qing emperor Qianlong. In 1988, it was opened to the public as a park, showing ancient philosophy, history and religion. Its grand architectural style and profound cultural connotation give an insight into the practices of the ancient Eastern civilization. However, this place is now more popular among the senior citizens. You will see hundreds of them doing all kinds of exercise inside the Temple of Heaven as they enjoyed free admission tickets from the government. You will also have chance to learn some Chinese traditional Tai-Chi Kong Fu under the instruction of a Tai-Chi Master.

Then you will be taken to the Hutong Area - the old residential area of local residence living for generations. The word "Hutong" probably came into use during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and literally means "well" in its original Mongolian language. Since people used to congregate where there was water, it came to adopt the meaning of "narrow lane" to refer to such a neighborhood. Leaving your motor coach behind and seated on a rickshaw, you will go into the deep hutongs for a glimpse into Beijing's yesterday, exploring Beijing's traditional side and experiencing the real life of Beijing locals. Take the rare opportunity for a visit to a private home in the hutongs. Chat with the hosts and learn more about daily life in Beijing.

After lunch in a local restaurant, transfer to Beijing Aiport for the afternoon flight to Shanghai where your Silver Muse awaits. Rejoin the ship after landing.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 4.3 miles (about seven kilometres), at time over uneven and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and board/de-board the coach, and 400 steps at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The tour sequence and itinerary are subject to change.
