Silversea Luxury Cruises A Devon Island

Located just across Baffin Bay from Greenland, Devon Island is the largest uninhabited island on the planet. A starkly beautiful place, Devon Island holds remnants of a Thule settlement that date back to 1000 AD. It was sighted by Europeans in the early 17th century by British explorers, including William Baffin for whom the nearby bay is named. The highest point of Devon Island is the Devon Ice Cap at 1,920 m (6,300 ft) which is part of the Arctic Cordillera. View more

Its surface is similar enough to that of Mars that it is the focus of the research community. Devon Island is also notable for the presence of the Haughton impact crater, created some 39 million years ago when a meteorite about 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter crashed to the surface. In the local Inuktitut language, Devon Island is called Talluruti, which translates as a woman’s chin with tattoos on it, referring to the tattoo-like crevasses and streaks on the cliffs of Devon Island that resemble the traditional Inuktitut facial tattoos. The climate of Devon Island is stark and unforgiving, such that a Royal Mounted Canadian outpost established in 1924 to monitor and control illegal activities was abandoned in 1933. Because of its relatively high elevation and its extreme northern latitude, it supports only a meagre population of muskox and small birds and mammals. Even so, the island is majestic in its stark beauty.
