Barcelona Icons: Sagrada Familia & Liceu

Discover the magnificent icons of Barcelona during this panoramic, half-day excursion to Sagrada Familia, Gaudì's masterpiece, and the Liceu Opera House.

Barcelona, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, Modernist Gothic Church

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Sagrada Familia, Gaudì's masterpiece. Sagrada Familia is an iconic symbol of Barcelona City, landmark for visitors from all over the world and often considered to be among the most extraordinary monuments ever constructed. This magnificent, neo-Gothic church was designed using the great medieval cathedrals as models for reference, and constructed in a modernist style (the Catalan version of Art Nouveau).

Nativity and Passion Facades, Tour of the Church's Interior

The project and its realisation was entrusted to renowned architect Antoni Gaudì. Although just over 30 years of age at the time, Gaudì worked on Sagrada Familia for the rest of his life. Having begun in 1882, work still continues today following the plans laid down by its designer; the fact that you can observe one of the masterpieces of world architecture being constructed before your very eyes makes your visit even more fascinating. During your visit, your guide shows you the two completed facades (the Nativity and the Passion), then leads you inside the church, where expert craftsmen continue to work on a masterpiece in constant evolution.

Liceu Opera House, Las Ramblas, Free Time, Shopping

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Liceu Opera House). Built in 1847 by Miquel Garriga i Roca on the world-renowned Boulevard Las Ramblas, the Liceu Opera House immediately became a symbol of the emerging Catalan middle-class. With an area of approximately 20,118 square feet (about 1,869 square metres) and 2,292 seats, the auditorium is among the biggest opera houses in the world. Following your guided tour, some free time is made available for independent shopping and exploration at Las Ramblas. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the Liceu Opera House. Gaudí’s Barcelona

Discover the whimsical art of the city's most famous architect, Antonio Gaudí, during this scenic, half-day sightseeing tour of Barcelona.

Depart the pier for the drive through the centre of the city towards the north and Colonia Güell.

Colonia Güell

A jewel of modernism still relatively unknown to the big public, Colonia Güell remains today as one of the most secret treasures of Catalan architecture genious Antoni Gaudí. Conceived as an industrial village to accommodate factory workers, Gaudi was in charge of building the church of the installations and even though the temple remained unfinished, the crypt is considered a culminating point of his works: the construction including for the first time practically all of his architectural innovations. After a guided visit, your tour continues on with a visit to the Church of the Holy Family, or, 'La Sagrada Familia'.

La Sagrada Familia

This monumental but unfinished church is Gaudí's most famous masterpiece. Its towering spires are Barcelona's most prominent landmark. Many of the steeples Gaudí envisioned have not yet been built, and much of the structure is still exposed to the heavens. Take a walk around this unfinished church on an exterior visit for photos before continuing your drive through the Eixample District.

Eixample District Tour

The Eixample District is home to some of Barcelona's most stunning examples of Modernist architecture, especially along the elegant Passeig de Gracia. Important buildings such as the Pedrera House, the Batllo House and the Ametller House line this impressive thoroughfare.

Casa Batlló

Next, a visit is made to Casa Batlló. Originally a residence of a wealthy industrialist, Gaudí completely renovated the building between 1904 and 1906, and its façade is unsurpassed in the entire city. There are no corners; even the walls are rounded and the tile roof depicts the back of a dragon. Your guided walking tour of this Gaudí masterpiece includes the impressive main floor and rooftop, which features whimsical chimneys and offers spectacular views over the city.

Following your visit, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with several steps to negotiate at the Casa Batlló (4 floors). It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Barcelona's City Government will no longer allow motor-coaches to drive by or stop near the Sagrada Familia. Respectful attire that covers the shoulders and knees should be worn in order to enter the crypt. Photos and video are not allowed inside the crypt. Motor-coaches are required to park in a parking lot approximately 2-3 blocks away from the Sagrada Familia. This will add an approximate 10 to 15 minute walk to and from Sagrada Familia (30 minutes total) and the order of sites visited may vary.

It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Tour sequence may vary.

Gothic Quarter & Public Markets

From the comfort of your coach, enjoy the views of Columbus Monument, the Old Port's installations, the Noucentist Avenue of Via Laietana and the Roman City Walls, until reaching the millenary heart of Barcelona and immersing in your enchanting traditional Markets walk through the ancient Barri Gotic - the Gothic Quarter.

Gothic Quarter

An island within the urban metropolis with narrow streets of ancient stone and historical buildings, the Gothic Quarter hosts the eternal administrative core of the city, with both the Palau de la Generalitat (Catalan Government palace) and l'Ajuntament (Town Hall), located on opposite sides of the over five centuries old Sant Jaume's Square. Follow your guide too through the vestiges of the Old Roman City of Barcino, medieval palaces and squares such as Plaça del Rei and Barcelona's main Cathedral of Santa Eulalia.

Public Markets

Just across Via Laietana, the oldest "path" in town, you will also visit the renewed Mercat of Santa Catarina, a place to taste a market snack and the flavour of local life, indeed a magnificent showcase of tradition, architectural innovation and recent archaeological excavations.

La Boqueria

A lovely route which will bring you to the very entrance of the Mercat of La Boqueria, Barcelona's most popular and colourful market, where time will also be provided to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the place and sample local products, direct from a market stall.

Las Ramblas

Returning to the maze of the Gothic area, and on your way to Barcelona's world famous boulevard of Las Ramblas, you will discover with your guide some of the city's most beautiful and hidden corners such as the square and church of Sant Felip Neri (architect Antoni Gaudí's daily place of confession), the alleys of the Medieval Jewish Ghetto, El Call, or the charming surroundings of the medieval Cathedral of Santa María del Pí.

Of course, your tour could not be completed without a stroll through the widely known and always vibrant tree-shaded Las Ramblas. Free time will be provided for you to browse among the souvenir and traditional goods shops of the area, finishing your tour with a visit to Plaça Catalunya, Barcelona's main square and the real hub between the old and the new city.

Please note: This tour requires approximately three hours of moderate walking over flat, inclined and uneven surfaces with extended periods of standing. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. The tour sequence may vary to avoid congestion.

Discover the splendid beauty and history of Montserrat in a unique new way during this full-day excursion via rack railway train to the top of Montserrat ridge. See the Monastery and all its grandeur and then have lunch at a local restaurant.

Scenic Drive to Montserrat

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 75-minute drive towards Montserrat, Catalan for the 'Sawed Mountain'. One of Europe's oldest and most unusual geological formations, the Montserrat ridge is an amazing and massive mountain chain of rock spurs that rise skyward in the middle of the Catalan countryside.

Mountain Train Ride

Upon arrival at the village of Monistrol, board a rack railway train for a breath-taking ride to the abbey of a secluded millenary Benedictine community perched amongst the peaks at a height of over 2,000 feet (610 metres) above sea level. Marvel at the spectacular panoramic views over Catalonia, learn about the local history and lore, and take a guided stroll to the main square.

Montserrat Monastery

Next, a visit is made to the Monastery. Here, see 'La Moreneta', the legendary Black Madonna, which presides over the basilica and has been darkened by the smoke of millions of candles throughout the centuries.

Shopping and Lunch

Afterward, some free time is made available for browsing and shopping before proceeding for lunch at a local restaurant. At the conclusion of this excursion, walk back to your coach and commence the approximate 75-minute drive back to the pier.

Northern Catalonia's largest city, Girona has an abundance of fine museums, galleries and Gothic churches clustered about cobblestone lanes enclosed by medieval walls. Reflections of Modernist mansions shimmer in the Riu Onyar, which divides the historic center on one bank from the gleaming commercial center on the other. Make your way to the Michelin Star restaurant for lunch. Before being seated, you will have the unique opportunity to look into the kitchen and see where the culinary masterpieces are prepared. Visit the Peralada and the castle of the same name. This former residence of the counts of Peralada was constructed in the 14th century and later converted into a palace. Now, it has become even more well-known thanks to its winery, which you will tour and then enjoy a tasting of its extraordinary Catalan Cava. Cross the French border for your overnight stay.

Day 3 - Following breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to the medieval citadel of Carcassone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that the locals simply call "La Cité". Perched on a rocky hilltop and featuring zigzag battlements, stout walls and spiky turrets, La Cité looks like a storybook castle, especially from afar. Situated in the heart of the La Clape Massif conservation area and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the Château l'Hospitalet is a peaceful heaven surrounded by a pine forest. This stands out from the contemporary architecture, as it is reminiscent of an ancient Catalan country house. Reserved for Club members, you will linger over a magnificent Spanish Paella cooking class prepared by the owner, a master chef. To make it even more special, you will be delighted by the sound of classic Spanish guitar, as a live performance will create the perfect atmosphere for a farewell lunch in Barcelona.
