Silversea Luxury Cruises A Amorgos

Amorgos

If you feel a sense of déjà vu when you arrive in Amorgos, don’t be surprised. The little island in the Cyclades found fame in the late 1980s thanks to Luc Besson’s cult film “The Big Blue”. But movie stars aside (and for anyone who has seen the film, you know we are talking about the dolphins who are the real stars of the show), Amorgos is what everything a Greek island should be. View more

Think pink bougainvillea climbing up every whitewashed wall and scarlet geraniums spilling out of every blue framed window. Small, friendly cafes line the (labyrinthine, cobbled) streets, beach bars serve tall glasses of ouzo over ice and traditional tavernas serve everything from souvlaki to tzatziki. Amorgos might be most famous however for its lack of mass tourism. You won’t find any wild nightclubs nor luxury boutiques here. Instead you’ll feel the pull of the past with the vestiges of a Minoan city, the beautiful 13-th century Venetian Kastro and its windmills and the 11th century Pangaea Hozoviotissa Monastery. Nature lovers will no doubt be in their element here too: seven main trails connect the villages to each other. Most hikes take around an hour and are considered easy but there are one or two exceptions, so beware! Divers will also be happy; the southern end of the island is home to the famous shipwreck features in The Big Blue. Now rife with algae, it is a prime feeding spot for the local marine life.

Excursiones en Amorgos

Agios Pavlos Beach Snorkeling

Agios Pavlos beach is situated in the north part on the island about 5 kilometers from the port of Aegiali. It boasts a coast that combines sand and pebbles and its crystal clear water makes it a perfect place for snorkeling and swimming.

Agios Pavlos Beach

Depart the pier for a brief transfer to the Agios Pavlos beach. Nikouria Island in front of the beach is creating a barrier from winds and currents which makes the conditions ideal for snorkeling. The seabed is not flat, but made out of skirts that lower and rise up in different levels, still staying within shallow depth. Here you can usually spot cuttlefish swimming along with their whole family, in size order, diverse smaller and very curious fish like rainbow wrasse. The floor is dotted with very large black sponges, and other treasures like mermaid's cups and octopus's gardens.

Free Time, Snorkelling, Swimming, Sunbathing

Enjoy approximately three hours of free time to swim, snorkel or simply relax and sunbathe in a tranquil ambiance surrounded by crystalline waters and forest-covered hillsides.

The tour concludes back at the pier.

Amorgian Glass Mosaic Class

Meet a local artist and learn the traditional art of Amorgian glass mosaic design on this half-day excursion.

Aegiali, Amorgian Glass Mosaic Workshop

Depart the pier for a brief transfer to Aegiali where you will enjoy amazing sea and mountain views and incredible, dramatic landscape. Upon arrival, meet a local artist who will introduce you to the history and tradition of Amorgian Glass Mosaic art, which has been taught from generation to generation on the island. After an introductory talk, learn how to design and all techniques necessary in order to create your personal piece of art with your own personal touch while having the pleasure of watching it take form right in front of your eyes. Use your imagination and taste to make unique artworks. All materials will be provided, and once your work of art is complete will have the opportunity to take this art piece home with you.

The tour concludes back at the pier.

Hozoviotissa Monastery & Chora

Visit the island's trademark, the Byzantine Monastery of Hozoviotissa, wedged into a huge precipice at 300m from the sea, and then continue to Chora, one of the most picturesque villages in the Cyclades, on this half-day sightseeing excursion.

Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa

The island's top attraction is the 10th century cliffside monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin, a spiritual haven and one of the most important ecclesiastic monuments in Greece. Set high up on the steepest rock of Mt. Profitis Elias, 300 metres above the Aegean Sea, the building resembles a "chest of drawers", according to the French explorer Pitton de Tournefort. Visible only from the sea, the monastery is an example of human triumph over nature, a wonder that will leave you awestruck. Once inside, you will be greeted by a monk who will take you on a tour of the Monastery and treat you with loukoumi (local sweet) and raki.

Town of Chora

Following your visit at the Monastery, board your coach for a drive to Chora. Built at the centre of the island and surrounded by rocky hills, the maze-like Chora of Amorgos is considered to be one of the most picturesque in the Cyclades. Here you can admire a breathtaking setting full of Byzantine and Early Christian churches, lovely windmills, and white houses. You may stroll around the paved little streets which remind of a labyrinth and provide great photo opportunities or relax under the shade of the huge eucalyptus tree located in the middle of the village square - Plateia Lozza.

Your coach will wait for you at the lower part of Chora, for your return drive to the pier.

Local Villages & Greek Cooking Class

Discover two local villages of Amorgos and learn about the local cuisine during an interactive hands-on cooking class with a renowned chef during this full-day excursion.

Village of Tholaria

Depart the pier for a short transfer to Tholaria, a picturesque mountain village whit narrow alleys and traditional whitewashed houses. The locals still live mostly from traditional trades and they are well known for their hospitality. Here, visit a 500-year-old local house with an installed old wooden oven and its cellar and learn about the architecture and the way locals lived. Before leaving, visit a small village church named Agioi Anargyroi.

Cooking Class & Lunch

Continue to a local restaurant for a hands-on cooking class with a renowned Chef who will explain the history of the culinary culture. Learn how to make cheese and spinach pies with homemade fyllo, vegetable croquettes, fava and tzatziki, followed by local desserts such as tiganites, loukoumades and sweetened fruit pies. Afterwards, simply relax and enjoy spectacular views of Aigiali Harbor while enjoying a fruit of your labor accompanied by some delicious wine.

Village of Langada

On your return to the port, visit a small village of Langada. Here, walk through a picturesque maze of narrow whitewashed streets and admire unique Cycladic architecture. You will have a chance to see an old olive press and learn a traditional process of turning olives into oil.

Hike the Historic Path, Aegiali Beach, Lunch

Next, walk back to the port of Aegiali, through the old historic path for approximately 30 minutes where you will be rewarded with a delicious Greek lunch served at a beach-front restaurant. You may enjoy a quick swim before your lunch or simply remain at the beach afterwards and walk back to the pier at your leisure.

Shipwreck of Olympia & Kalotaritissa Beach

Visit one of the most melancholic but also beautiful beaches in Greece on this sightseeing excursion. Kalotaritissa Beach along with the iconic Shipwreck of Olympia were used as a shooting area for various documentaries, as well as the movie "Le grand bleu" starring Jean Reno in 1988.

Panoramic Drive & Walk

Depart the pier for approximately one hour panoramic drive to the southwestern coast of Amorgos. Here, disembark the coach and begin your walk through beautiful vegetation including wild cypress, a tree which in the past was used to build houses in Amorgos. Wild cypresses were named "Fides" (snakes), as their branches and trunks have formed snaky shapes because of the strong wind movements. After approximately 30 minutes you will reach the Shipwreck of Olympia, one of the most melancholic yet beautiful landmarks of the island.

Shipwreck of Olympia

The shipwreck which ironically was previously called 'Inland' sank in February 1980. The captain was seeking for a place near the coast where they could find shelter from the strong north winds. But they were helpless and the rough sea threw them into the bay of Liverio near to the beach of Kalotaritissa. Luckily the whole crew was rescued. The shipwreck has been featured in many documentaries, as well as in Luc Besson's feature film "The Big Blue" starring Jean Reno.

Kalotaritissa Beach, Free Time, Swimming, Sunbathing

Next, walk back to your coach for a brief transfer to the Kalotaritissa Beach for some free time at your leisure before your drive back to the pier.
