Silversea Expedition Cruises To STROMNESS ORKNEY ISLANDS

STROMNESS ORKNEY ISLANDS

Modern Stromness hasn’t changed dramatically since the turn of the last century and stone houses still stand over cobbled streets, but Orkney’s main historic claim is the rich legacy of Neolithic sites and artefacts found here. It was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 under the title “Heart of Neolithic Orkney.” The most famous of these monuments is probably the settlement of Skara Brae, once a small village of 50-100 people living together near the shores of Skaill Bay. Occupied from roughly 3180 BCE-2500 BCE, the site has given us invaluable insight into the daily lives of our forebears, and Skara Brae forms the hub of a network of Neolithic sites across the Orkneys, many of which are still being excavated. Other sites include the standing stones of the Ring of Brodgar, situated on an isthmus between the sea loch of Stenness and the freshwater loch of Harray.

Excursions in STROMNESS ORKNEY ISLANDS

Heart of Neolithic Orkney with Archaeologist

Guided by a local Archaeologist, depart Stromness for the Neolithic Heartland of Orkney; an area designated as a World Heritage Site due to its wealth of pre-historic archaeology.

Walk around the Standing Stones of Stenness, one of the earliest discovered henge monuments in the British Isles, along with the associated Barnhouse village ruins. Next visit the Ring of Brodgar; a huge ceremonial circle of stones dating back almost 5000 years. Continue to the 5000-year-old village of Skara Brae, beautifully interpreted in the visitor centre. See the remarkable dwellings revealed from beneath the sand dunes by storms only 150 years ago.

From here it is only a short walk to Skaill House, Orkney's finest manor. Skaill was built by Bishop George Graham in 1620 on the site of a farmstead thought to date to the Norse period. In its 400-year history all 12 of its Lairds have been related and all have contributed to the history and collection in the house.

Reboard the coach and return to Stromness through the West Mainland's gentle rolling countryside.

Seafaring Stromness Nature Walk

Depart by coach for a short transfer to Warbeth Bay. Take a coastal path along the seafront, passing spectacular views of the formidable hills of Hoy, plant and sea life as well as derelict gun batteries from the world wars.

Meander along the picturesque harbor through the pretty flag-stoned streets of Stromness. Admire the town's quirky architectural character and learn about its Herring and Hudson's Bay heritage, art and literary history. Continue with the guide to Stromness Museum or enjoy free time exploring the shops, cafes, art galleries and winding passageways.

Meet the coach and return to the ship.
