Silversea Luxury Cruises Northern Europe and British Isles - Reyjkavik

Sprawling Reykjavík, the nation's nerve center and government seat, is home to half the island's population. On a bay overlooked by proud Mt. Esja (pronounced eh-shyuh), with its ever-changing hues, Reykjavík presents a colorful sight, its concrete houses painted in light colors and topped by vibrant red, blue, and green roofs. In contrast to the almost treeless countryside, Reykjavík has many tall, native birches, rowans, and willows, as well as imported aspen, pines, and spruces. Reykjavík's name comes from the Icelandic words for smoke, reykur, and bay, vík. View more

In AD 874, Norseman Ingólfur Arnarson saw Iceland rising out of the misty sea and came ashore at a bay eerily shrouded with plumes of steam from nearby hot springs. Today most of the houses in Reykjavík are heated by near-boiling water from the hot springs. Natural heating avoids air pollution; there's no smoke around.

After entering the park, explore the landscape of Iceland's early parliament. Delving into the majestic hinterland. Drive along the dramatic Cold valley to Langjökull Glacier (Long Glacier). Langjökull is approximately 4.460 feet (about 1.359 meters) in length and approximately 4.000 feet (about 1.219 meters) above sea level and spans an area of approximately 366 square miles (about 948 square kilometers). Ice Cave, Chapel and Bar, and White-and-Blue ice

This amazing attraction is a man-made cave that stretches deep into the glacier and consists of a series of tunnels and caves carved through solid glacial ice. There is also an Ice Chapel and an Ice Bar that pull the glacier apart, along with sunlight penetrating the packed ice are among the natural wonders to be see during your guided visit. This cave-like tunnel leads into the icy underground and as the ice gets older, the color changes from white to a magnificent deep blue.

Húsafell, Dinner, Hraunfoss and Barnafoss Waterfalls and Tunnel

The cave also provides glaciologists, meteorologists and other scientist with the ability to study the glacier in a new way. After this amazing experience, re-board your super jeep and head back to the woodlands of Húsafell and proceed to dinner at a local restaurant. After dinner your drive continues to the nearby Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls: two of Iceland's most picturesque cascades. Following your visit. Action and Lobster

This super 4X4 adventure tour takes us to magical places created by the power of volcanoes, ice and time. We'll start with a pleasant drive through Hafnarfjörður town, situated picturesquely on an ancient lava flow. Driving towards Kleifarvatn Lake, we'll take an interesting shortcut to show you what our monster truck is capable of.

We'll continue to the enchanting Kleifarvatn Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Iceland, where the scenery has to be seen to be believed. The tuff stone mountains, reflected in the waters of the lake, give an eerie stillness and one can easily understand why a serpent-like monster is thought to dwell in the depths of the blue darkness.

Onwards, to the multi coloured deposits from the hot springs of Krýsuvík where we'll stop for a short walk amongst boiling mud pools and the hissing of steam vents. We'll make another brief stop at the photogenic Grænavatn or "green lake". This is an explosion crater filled with water of the most vivid green. We'll continue east across beautiful lava fields and before arriving at our lunch venue make a stop at the charming Strandakirkja Church.

The drive continues to the quaint village, Stokkseyri, where our dinner will be served at an Icelandic Lobster (langoustine) restaurant - the renowned Fjöruborðið. After dinner, we'll head off the beaten track, by way of a trail known as "The Thousand Waters". The road winds its way through numerous rivers, mud banks and streams and all too soon we're back in the city with a delightful day behind us.

Fly me to the Moon

Experience the spectacular natural splendour of the lunar-like Reykjanes Peninsula during this picturesque flight-seeing excursion.

Reykjavik, Reykjanes Peninsula

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the Reykjavík Domestic Airport. Upon arrival, receive your safety and flight instructions, then board your awaiting airplane and begin your panoramic flight-seeing tour. Fly over the colourful city of Reykjavík before heading towards the mossy lava field of the Reykjanes Peninsula, a lunar-like area that has been affected by volcanic eruptions and lava flows for millions of years.

Lake Kleifarvatn, Krýsuvík and Gunnuhver Geothermal Fields, Mt. Keilir

Next, fly over the mysterious Lake Kleifarvatn, which has been linked to many Soviet spy stories, and the unique and colourful geothermal fields of Krýsuvík and Gunnuhver. In addition, pass over the beautiful, cone-shaped Mt. Keilir. Here, you can see the ridge where the American and Euro-Asian tectonic plates drift apart. At the conclusion of your flight-seeing tour, return to the airport, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and board-de-board the airplane. This tour is not suitable for guests with a fear of heights, guests prone to airsickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. The flight routes and operation of this tour are subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Ice & Fire: Glaciers and Volcanoes

Experience the breath-taking natural beauty of Iceland from a unique perspective during this panoramic flight-seeing excursion.

Reyjavik, Tindfjallajökull Volcano, Eyjafjallajökull Glacier, Hekla Volcano

Depart the pier for the short drive to the airport. Upon arrival, receive your safety and flight instructions, then board your awaiting airplane and begin your unforgettable flight-seeing tour. Your route begins with a flight over the magnificent Tindfjallajökull Volcano. Its highest peak is named after the Norse mythological giant, Ýmir, whose body was used by the gods to create earth. From here, continue over the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier, the unpronounceable volcano that brought the world to a stop with its eruption in 2010. Between the ice and snow fields see Hekla, the most famous of Iceland's volcanoes, which last erupted in 2000 and is closely monitored by geologists for the next eruption.

Golden Circle, Þingvellir Rift Valley, Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir Geothermal Area

Next, fly over the Golden Circle, which covers approximately 186 miles (about 300 kilometres) looping from Reykjavík into the southern uplands of Iceland and back. Along the way, your flight passes over the rift valley, Þingvellir, where the Icelandic parliament convened for centuries. Seeing the valley from the air offers an informative glimpse into tectonic plate movements, and bears witness to what happens to landscapes that rest on divergent plate boundaries. Afterward, fly over Gullfoss, the 'Golden Waterfall'. If you're lucky, you may see a geyser spouting whilst passing over the Geysir geothermal area.

Þórsmörk Valley, Landmannalaugar Highland Oasis, Jökulgilsá River

Your flight continues over Þórsmörk, a valley sheltered by three glaciers and sculpted by natural forces. Due to numerous foreboding glacial rivers, this magnificent valley is only accessible by Jeeps and specialised vehicles. From here, fly over the highland oasis of Landmannalaugar, one of the pearls of Icelandic nature and renowned for its multiplicity of colours. Pink and blue ashes, as well as black lava, are found at the Landmannalaugar. Red, brown and yellow are seen at the sides of the volcano next to it, where an obsidian lava field reaches from the sulphur hot springs down to a small, naturally warm river by a grassy oasis. The milk-coloured Jökulgilsá River flows peacefully towards the ocean.

Panoramic Reykjavik

Reykjavík, with about 120,000 inhabitants, is certainly among the smallest capital cities in the world. This sightseeing tour takes you on a journey to some of Reykjavík's most noteworthy sites.

The journey begins with a drive through Laugardalur Valley, the city's main sports and recreational area. We pass the Olympic sized, open-air swimming pool that is filled with geothermal water. The pool is one of the most popular swimming pools in the city and is filled with locals socialising year-round.

Árbær open-air museum

The tour continues to Árbær open-air museum where we'll enjoy a pleasant walk among the historical buildings located there. The museum was founded due to growing concern that "old Reykjavik" was disappearing forever. The city council created a public park and regional museum to preserve historical buildings from around the country.

Perlan

From the Árbær museum we'll continue to one of the city's landmark buildings, Perlan ("The Pearl").The building itself is architecturally interesting - its dome consists of reflecting glass panels on a hollow steel frame. Perlan has a viewing platform on top of the hot-water tanks which extends full circle, offering splendid views over the city.

National Museum

From Perlan we'll head to The National Museum. The museum is dedicated to communicating knowledge of Iceland's cultural heritage from the time of its pioneering settlement to the present day. From The National Museum, the tour ends with a drive through the old quarter of Reykjavík with its charming colourful houses.

Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking is suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair; however, guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach via the bus steps. The order of sites seen or visited may vary. Operation of this tour is subject to minimum participation.

Relax in the Blue Lagoon

Spend a half day experiencing one of Iceland's most famed sites during this relaxing immersion in to the Blue Lagoon.

Depart the ship and drive alongside the city lake with a view of the City Hall. Travel past Perlan 'The Pearl,' a glass dome on the top of the hot-water tanks in Reykjavik. Continue through Reykjavik's suburbs, towards Hafnarfjordur.

The Blue Lagoon

Drive through the rugged lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula towards the Blue Lagoon and stop for approximately two and a half hours to indulge in these waters. The Blue Lagoon owes its existence to the nearby geothermal power plant. The facilities on site offer changing-room facilities as well as a tax-free shop and a café. The water of the Lagoon is a steamy 98-102°F (36-39°C), mineral-rich and reputed for its healing properties. The blue colour of the water, the steam and the thirteen foot (four metre) high lava wall surrounding the Lagoon succeed in creating a unique atmosphere. This natural and very popular health spa is now a major attraction in the region and considered to be one of the most visited places on the island.

Return to Reykjavik, over the barren Reykjanes peninsula dominated by old lava-flows. From the Blue Lagoon, head back to Hafnarfjordur via a different route. While driving the Reykjanesbraut, see the Heidmork outdoor recreation area and the residential areas of Reykjavik. Continue along the coastline returning to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves little walking along a paved pathway and is suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilize a wheelchair. Guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach, and to get in to and out of the Blue Lagoon. Pregnant women are advised to check with their doctor/health care worker before taking this tour. Even though the Blue Lagoon is not particularly deep guests do need to be able to swim in order to participate on this tour. Children must be at least 2 years of age to participate and children under the age of 12 must wear an inflatable vest provided by the lagoon and should not be left unaccompanied at any time in the Lagoon. We recommend that guests drink plenty of water before and during the bathe. For hygienic purposes, it is expected (in line with local customs) to take a shower without swimwear before entering the Blue Lagoon. Separate dressing rooms and showers are provided for men and women. Guests are advised to bring a swimsuit.

Volcanoes and Waterfalls

Connect with the power of nature, and what it can do, on this tour of the spectacular natural highlights in the area surrounding Reykjavik. Learn about daily life in Skógar, and visit the Lava Centre to learn more about how volcanic activity gave birth to Iceland across millions of years.

Scenic Drive on Hellisheiði Mountain Road

Begin with a beautifully scenic drive for two hours (brief stop in Hvolsvöllur), including along the mountain road Hellisheiði, an incredibly windy and steep drive. Travel past the largest geothermal power plant in Iceland (and the second largest in the world) and through some of the most fertile land in the country. Cross the Þjórsá, Iceland's longest river drive through small, charming hamlets. At the clear river Rangá, you may see salmon-fishermen standing, which they do all day, hoping for a good catch.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Your first destination is perhaps the most memorable, the beautiful Seljalandsfoss, a stunning waterfall that cascades in an arc that allows visitors to walk around and behind its falls. The falls are fed by the glacier-capped Eyjafjallajokull volcano, made famous for its 2010 eruption.

Skógar Museum and Waterfall

Drive 30 minutes to the Skógar Museum, home to 15,000 objects that tell the story of Southern Iceland'c cultural heritage. Explore the museum on your own time, including its multiple ancient buildings such as a farmhouse, church, blacksmith and an old turf house. Drive to see another incredible waterfall, Skógafoss, which prove a contrast to the Seljalandsfoss falls with an inward-facing curve that you most certainly cannot walk behind (without getting soaking wet!).

Lava Centre Visit

Itinerary:

Day 1 - This morning you will be met at Keflavik Airport and transferred to the Sand Hotel - early check in will be available to Silversea guests depending on your flight arrival. Morning at leisure. Depart from hotel Sand to visit Hellisheidi power plant where you will learn about how the heat of the earth's core translates directly into Iceland's leadership in geothermal technology use, and what is involved in powering the turbines at the largest single unit power plant in the world. Enjoy a Super Jeep adventure drive through mountainous tundra as you barrel towards Raufarho Ishelli: a lava tunnel formed by prehistoric volcanic activity. Have lunch while basking in breathtaking environment before a tour along the south coast of the island. Arrive back at Sands just in time for dinner in one of Reykjavik's top restaurants.

Day 2 - Pack up and check out for an all-day excursion ending at Skalakot Lodge. Stops along the way include Seljalandsfoss; Iceland's most famous natural wonder, as well as Skógafoss. These waterfalls treat visitors to mystical and folkloric stories, caves, and a possible sighting of a double rainbow. Recharge with a bistro-style lunch before your afternoon hikes. You will experience walking on a glacier and along Iceland's most impressive black sand beach while reveling in rich wildlife and stories about the Reynisdrangar stacks.

Day 3 - Enjoy a day trip from the Lodge that explores the islands of Vestmannaeyjar. A boat trip and safari tour of the island is sure to produce the sighting of the famous bright-beaked puffin. This region hosts the largest single colony of puffins in the world and is a birdwatcher's dream. Lunch will be enjoyed at the picturesque Tanginn bistro, where both Icelandic fare (everything from whale steak to catch of the day) to traditional burgers are offered against a nautical backdrop of ferry docks and the impressive Horgayri spit. Depart from the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago to enjoy dinner and relaxation back at Skalakot Lodge.

Day 4 - Check out for another scenic day trip. Stop at Geysir, the namesake of all geysers in the world (the word Geysir means "to gush" in Icelandic) and Gullfoss; a breathtaking two-tiered waterfall ending in a 70-meter canyon, on your way to Reykjavik. Check-in at hotel and lunch at Greenhouse is followed by a helicopter tour of Thrihnukagigur volcano ("Three Peaks Crater"). Enjoy an exclusive bird's-eye view of the magma chamber of the volcano and learn about its most recent eruption 4000 years ago. Reminisce on the experience over a traditionally minimalist, artisanal meal at Dill, or a farm-to-table culinary experiment at Grillmarket.

Day 5 - This morning experience the iconic Blue Lagoon, an Icelandic must do! The Blue Lagoon is a natural geothermal spa surrounded by lava field and black sandy beaches. Have "the swim of your life" enjoying the comfort of the warm lagoon water before you are transferred to the harbor to board the Silver Wind.

Before horseback riding one of the typical Icelandic horses, visit Geysir -active for the last 10,000 years- and Gullfoss waterfall with its wide curved steps and steep plunges. Return to Tower Suites and have a welcome dinner at Michelin star Dill Restaurant.

Day 2 - After breakfast fly by private helicopter to Akureyri. Drive to Godafoss waterfall for a champagne toast and continue to Lake Myvatn and the geothermal area around Krafla and Namaskard. A lunch at a private place will feature local fresh produce. Walk through Dimmuborgir, an area of strange rock formations -used for scenes in "Game of Thrones"- before driving west to Deplar Farm, a luxury resort hotel built in the traditional Icelandic style in remote Skagafjordur. Dinner will be served in Deplar.

Day 3 - This will be a day of exploring Iceland's North. There will be several options available to keep you busy: chose kayaking or go fishing on nearby Stifluvatn, go mountain-biking or visit Siglufjordur and its famous Herring Era Museum. A special activity would be to go whale watching in Eyjafjordur, looking for white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises, as well as humpback and minke whales. You could also go on a RIB safari or go horseback riding. Enjoy an evening around a bonfire and let a local storyteller entertain you with tales of elves and trolls and other hidden beings.

Day 4 - After a leisurely breakfast, we will take our private helicopter to fly to remote Drangey Island, home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, gannets, kittiwakes, fulmars, and shearwaters along with ravens and gyrfalcons. Enjoy bird-watching and a hearty Icelandic lunch. During the afternoon fly back to Reykjavik and the Reykjavik Tower Suites. During pre-dinner cocktails a private lecture will bring closer some of the interesting facets of Iceland.

Day 5 - This morning you will fly from Reykjavik to the top Eyjafjallajokull, of one Europe's most famous volcanos covered by an ice cap. A special lunch set up on the ice cap will be followed by an exploration of the area in private Arctic Buggies. Eventually you will reach two famous waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. In both cases the water drops some 60 meters and one can even walk behind the falling water. Legends claim of treasures hidden there, but after the exploration on the ice cap some local delicacies and a hot chocolate will certainly be treasured.

Day 6 - Today set out to explore the inner core of an ice cap. In the morning fly by private helicopter onto the Langjokull Glacier. There you will enter a man-made ice tunnel at 1200 meters above sea level. Deep within the glacier you will feel transported into another dimension, a world of stunningly beautiful blue ice at the heart of this glacier. After refreshment inside a special ice cave, your helicopter will take you to the picturesque island Arnarey in the bay of Breidafjordur. A private lunch with the freshest produce of West Iceland will be set up for you. Later fly across Breidafjordur to Stykkisholmur, located on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. After lunch fly back to Reykjavik and the Reykjavik Tower Suites. This evening, a special Farewell Dinner will be had at one of Reykjavik's top restaurants.

Day 7 - On your last day enjoy a relaxing stay at Blue Lagoon, Iceland's most famous hot springs. After your various explorations and diverse impressions of Iceland, bathe in the milky blue water, have a massage or a spa treatment and enjoy a walk in the Blue Lagoon's unique and spectacular surroundings before being transferred to Keflavik International Airport for your onward flight arrangements around mid-afternoon.
