Silversea Luxury Cruises To Patreksfjordur

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Patreksfjordur, Iceland

Sitting in the finger-like scenery of the Westfjords - which flays out from the mainland to form one of Europe’s most westerly points, Patreksfjordur has barely 700 inhabitants and - like so many Icelandic communities - is built on time-tested fishing traditions. Discover wonderful crowds of birdlife clinging to the dramatic cliffs, as you embark on adventures amid the Westfjords, discovering flat-topped mountains, cutting inlets and evocative, windswept beaches. With their bright beaks and amiable features, puffins are some of the most beautiful birds in the world - and they nest in huge quantities on Látrabjarg cliff, close to Patreksfjordur. Vertically steep and imposing, the birds are safe from predators like foxes here, as they live and breed on the dramatically steep drop-offs. Wander to see them thriving in their natural habitat, clinging to cliff ledges. You can also encounter gannets and guillemots, as well as an estimated 40% of the world’s Razorbill population. Rauðasandur beach is one of Iceland’s more unusual sights, a huge copper-red stretch of sand. Wander the dreamy shoreline, and photograph the remote, colourful collision of sea and sand. You’re also close to the majestic veil of Dynjandi waterfall, which fans out across 60 metres as it descends. After a tough day’s hiking, return to Patreksfjordur to admire fjord views and soak your muscles in an outdoor pool, as the stars begin to appear above. Or head to the muscle-relieving, naturally-heated, geothermal pools that murmur nearby.

Patreksfjörður, Garðar BA Shipwreck, Bird Cliff, Seabirds

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Látrabjarg, the western-most point of Europe and its largest bird cliff. En route, a brief comfort is made, followed by another photo stop at the shipwreck of the Garðar BA, the oldest steel boat in Iceland. Upon arrival at Látrabjarg, take a guided stroll on this massive cliff inhabited by millions of diverse seabirds, including puffins, razorbills, fulmars, guillemot, and many other species. Along the way, marvel at the amazing birdlife and pristine natural beauty of your unforgettable surrounds. Don't forget to bring a camera, as Látrabjarg is reputed to be the best place in the world to photograph puffins.

Hnjótur Folk & Air Museum, Historical Artefacts, Aviation Relics

Next, re-board your coach and head to the Hnjótur Folk & Air Museum. The museum is a collection by farmer Egill Ólafsson, who, from an early age, began collecting historical objects from the past that eventually became a well-established and noteworthy museum. Apart from being a folk museum, it is also an air relic's museum, with many objects from the first years of Icelandic aviation history. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Patreksfjörður Fish-Tasting Tour

Embrace the history and flavours of the fishing village and harbour area of Patreksfjörður on-foot during this seafood tour and tasting excursion.

Patreksfjörður, Guided Walking Tour

Depart the pier for a guided walking tour through the fishing village and harbour area of Patreksfjörður. This historic village has a long history of fishing as a base for English, French and German fishermen. The village is full of life, with eco-friendly, long-line fishing and fish-processing the main industries here. Fresh, frozen and salted cod, haddock and Atlantic catfish are exported from Patreksfjörður to key markets in Europe and U.S.

Fresh Fish Tasting Stops, Oddi Fish Factory, Húsið Main Fish Factory, Tour & Tasting of Dried Fish

During your guided stroll, enjoy the relaxed local atmosphere of this charming fishing village. Along the way, stops are made at a few local venues to sample different types of fresh fish, including salmon and cod. A stop is also made at the main fish factory in Patreksfjörður to learn about the entire production process of first-class fish products. See the old, specially-constructed wooden frames on which fish was hung to dry, and, of course, taste dried fish with Icelandic butter. At the conclusion of your tour, commence the short walk back to the pier.

Seal-Watching Adventure at Rauðasandur

Experience one of the most spectacular sights in Iceland during this seal-watching excursion to Rauðasandur.

Patreksfjörður, Garðar BA Shipwreck, Red Sands, Black Cliffs, Atlantic Ocean, Rauðasandur

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 40-minute drive to Rauðasandur. En route, pass by the shipwreck of the Garðar BA, the oldest steel boat in Iceland. One of the most spectacular sites in Iceland, Rauðasandur is surrounded by a magnificent landscape of red-coloured sand, black cliffs and the blue Atlantic Ocean. The beach takes it red colour from pulverized scallop shells that have accumulated over the centuries.

Tractor Carriage-Ride, Harbour Seal Colony

Upon arrival, meet your local farmer/guide and hop aboard his tractor-carriage for the ride to a seal colony, where harbour seals are often seen at a close range. More than 100 seals take advantage of the sun and sand at Rauðasandur, sunbathing and resting on the beach. In early-spring, mothers lie on the sand with their young. Later in the summer, you can watch as the pups take their first steps to adulthood.

Seal-Watching, Free Time

During the seal-watching portion of your adventure, follow the directions of your guide and move carefully as we try not to disturb the wild animals. Due to their curiosity, you can expect to get good photo opportunities of these beautiful animals in the picturesque landscape of Rauðasandur. Following your seal-watching session, some free time is made available to enjoy the sandy beach at your leisure. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 40-minute drive back to the pier.

Splendid combination: Mountains & Waterfalls of Arnarfjörður

The magnificent mountains, breath-taking waterfalls and diverse landscapes of Arnarfjordur are yours to discover during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion.

Patreksfjörður, Bildudalur Village, Sea Monster Museum

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 40-minute drive to the village of Bildudalur. Despite its isolation, the village displays a high level of cultural life as evidenced by its Sea Monster Museum, which demonstrates tales of sea monsters that played a colourful role in Icelandic folk culture for centuries. From here, re-board your coach and head to the impressive Dynjandi Waterfall.

Dynjandi Waterfall

Arnarfjörður is widely considered the most beautiful fjord in the Westfjords because of its diverse landscape, magnificent mountains and this breath-taking waterfall. At approximately 327 feet (about 100 meters) tall and up to 197 feet (about 60 meters) in width, the great Dynjandi is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords and among the most stunning in Iceland. A hiking path leads up to the central gorge of the waterfall, enabling you to come close enough to touch the water as it tumbles down into the depths.

Kaldbakur, Hot Springs, Optional Feet-Soaking, Flókalundur, Vatnsfjörður, Barðaströnd Beach

Afterward, admire the highest mountain in the Westfjords, Kaldbakur, and stop to soak your feet at the nearby Reykjafjardar, a remote hot spring pool surrounded by exquisite Icelandic nature. Leaving Reykjafjardar, re-board your coach and proceed to Flókalundur for a photo stop at the panoramic Raven Flóki Viewpoint. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier via the lovely beautiful Vatnsfjörður Nature Reserve and along Barðaströnd Beach, with a comfort stop en route.
