The fresh, ocean air of Newport was much sought after during the Gilded Age, as the rich and powerful made their mark, building grand and stately mansions overlooking the waves. These magnificent houses - and landscaped gardens - add whitewash grandeur to the beautiful stretch of coastline. Take the 3.5-mile coastal walk, out across rugged cliffs with birds calling out, and wildflowers dotting the path. Be warned that the walk does become a little more difficult as it progresses. Stroll the coast, and sit to watch surfers catching Atlantic rollers, or take the twists and turns of Newport's incredible ocean drive, to soak in the wonderful views by road. Laced with underground tunnels, Fort Adams is Newport’s sprawling complex military fortress. Surrounded by Fort Adams State Park, you can enjoy the relaxed surroundings, absorbing scenic views of the harbour and Narragansett Bay. Unpack a picknick on the grass, as the swells of music carry on the sea breeze - especially during the annual folk and jazz festivals. Or try great Newport seafood in the bustling eateries of repurposed wharves - serving up Rhode Island specials like steamed lobster and clams.

Excursions in NEWPORT (Rhode Island)

Colonial Walking Tour

Newport is one of America's oldest cities and has the distinction of retaining more original colonial-period buildings than any other early American city. Stroll through the heart of Newport's National Registered Historic Landmarks District and hear the story of how this long-neglected neighborhood became a model for historic preservation.

With the help of tobacco heiress Doris Duke, who personally financed much of the restoration, the Historic District is now home to over 80 fully restored colonial homes. Along the way, pass architect Peter Harrison's Brick Market Museum, the Old Colony House, the White Horse Tavern, and the Quaker Meeting House.

Pass also the Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the country and one of the many sites visited by Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Return to the quay via the square where Hollywood producer-director Stephen Spielberg filmed the movie Amistad in 1997, using the city's most picturesque landmarks.

Gardens & Vineyards

Take a 30 minute drive to Blithewold a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay. The property features a 45-room mansion filled with family heirlooms, a collection providing complete evidence of one family's way of life between 1810 and 1976. An exceptional collection of rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, an accessible greenhouse, and whimsical stonework project are all part of a character that is romantic, fresh and inspiring.

Your private guide will help you explore the Blithewold Mansion Gardens & Arboretum with a 2 hour walk through the gardens, taking a 1 hour break for lunch and private tasting of their local wines. Have some free time to explore on your own before you return to the ship.

Newport Cliff Walk & Breakers

Experience the splendid coast and mansions of Newport on-foot during a picturesque, half-day walking tour of this historic city.

Cliff Walk

Depart the pier for a short transfer to start the Cliff Walk trail. Upon arrival, begin your guided stroll along a portion of the spectacular Cliff Walk trail. With New England's rocky shore and crashing surf on one side and Newport's most extravagant mansions on the other, the Cliff Walk remains one of the top attractions in Newport.

The Breakers

Next, proceed for a guided tour of the Breakers, commissioned by tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt II, Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad. One of Newport's most elegant mansions, the Breakers was inspired by the 16th-century palaces of Genoa and Turin. This 70-room, Italian Renaissance-style villa was designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, who directed an international team of craftsmen and artisans. Completed in 1895, the mansion is situated on a 13-acre estate overlooking a spectacular view of the rugged Atlantic Coastline.

At the conclusion of your tour, stop by the gift shop before commencing the short transfer back to the pier.

Newport Colonial Walk

Marvel at the Colonial charm and architecture of one of North America's oldest cities during this delightful walking tour of Newport.

More recently, the Loeb Visitors Center was built in celebration and remembrance of the importance of the separation of Church and State and religious freedom.
