Silversea Luxury Cruises To LERWICK, SHETLAND ISLANDS

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Lerwick

Adrift between the Scottish and Norwegian coasts, the craggy Shetland Islands form the most northerly point of the British Isles. Sprawling across 100 islands, connected by sandy bridges and crisscrossing ferries, explore the highlights of this scenic archipelago outpost. With incredible Neolithic history, spanning 5,000 years of human heritage, these islands, which sit just shy of the Arctic Circle, are an isolated and immense treasure trove of history and thrilling scenery. Look out over dramatic coastline from atmospheric Iron Age towers. View more

Sweeping, windswept beaches and wisps of sand connect islands and rugged cliffs - stand back as the sounds of the waves smashing against the shore and calling gulls fills the air. The islands are also home to some of the most adorable four-legged creatures you’ll ever meet, the diminutive and wavy-fringed, Shetland Ponies who roam the hills and reach a maximum size of 42 inches. Don't be fooled, though, they are amongst the strongest and toughest of all breeds. Their existence here points to Viking history, as local horses bred with ponies brought ashore by Norse settlers, creating the lovable crossbreed that is an icon of these islands today. The towering Broch of Mousa is perhaps Europe’s best-preserved Iron Age building - and one of the Shetland's finest brochs - a series of round, stone towers, believed to have been constructed around 100 BC. Seals and birdlife ensure that the isolated islands are always well-populated with life - and you can embark on hikes to discover their coastal homes. Lerwick is the islands’ capital, and there's a charming welcome on offer, as you arrive before the waterfront of stone buildings, which cascade down to the shore.

A Flavour of Shetland

Your tour departs from Lerwick, the capital and largest town in Shetland, dating from the 1600s, and heads North. Pass through the picturesque community of Voe with its Scandinavian influence before arriving at the Busta House Hotel.

Busta House

Busta House is one of Shetland's most historic and beautiful buildings and has been standing proud over the Busta coastline since the 16th Century. On arrival, your group will be seated in the cozy and comfortable Long Room where you will be treated to a delicious and informal Shetland food and drink experience, with locally sourced produce served to you by the welcoming and friendly staff.

Culinary Experience

Your 3-course taster menu will include a traditional Shetland soup, local seafood and shellfish, accompanied by specially selected beverages from the Lerwick Brewery and Shetland Gin Distillery. During the tasting, your hosts will speak to you about each of the courses, and how and where the ingredients are sourced.

Time at Leisure

Afterwards, you will have time to enjoy a stroll around the beautiful grounds of the hotel, request a tour of the bedrooms (if this is possible on the day) or just sit back and relax in the comfort of the lounge.

Enjoy a scenic drive back to Lerwick before returning to your ship after experiencing some of the best hospitality Shetland has to offer.

Castles, Ponies and Shetland Jewellery

Lerwick

The tour starts in the fishing port of Lerwick, founded in the 17th century. The centre is full of character, especially by the water's edge where the older buildings are situated. As you drive through the town, see the Town Hall before turning west to the old town of Scalloway, the original main town and second largest settlement on the island.

Scalloway

On arrival in Scalloway, stop to visit the now roofless Castle which was built around 1600 by the tyrant Earl Patrick Stewart. He used forced labour to build his residence and was executed in Edinburgh in 1615. Visit the fascinating local museum, which has a special display devoted to the "Shetland Bus", the boats which travelled between Shetland and Norway helping the Norwegian Resistance movement during World War II. If you prefer, wander through Scalloway's Main Street and view the waterfront.

Tingwall Valley and Shetland Ponies

Leaving Scalloway, travel through the Tingwall Valley with its Norse heritage; visiting a herd of Shetland Ponies en route. Learn about the history and characteristics of this small and hardy pony, directly from a local breeder before embarking back onto the coach and continuing through the spectacular Shetland scenery.

Shetland Jewellery

Carry on north through Girlsta and Weisdale before visiting the Shetland Jewellery workshop. Here you will be able to see how the beautifully hand crafted, local jewellery is designed and made, with the opportunity to purchase a piece of your very own to take home with you.

On the way back to Lerwick, hear more of Shetland's culture and heritage from your experienced local guide.

Hike on Mousa Island

Depart through Lerwick, the capital of Shetland, as you begin your trip to the Island of Mousa. En route, you pass through the rural township of Fladdabister before catching your first glimpse of the magnificent Mousa Broch, the tallest and best-preserved broch in the world. At the small ferry port and transfer to the Solan IV boat for a short crossing to the Island of Mousa.

Mousa is an uninhabited island 1.5 miles long and 1 mile wide. Here we will enjoy a guided walk of this island to admire beautiful scenery and wildlife includes seal and bird colonies en-route. Spot Common and Grey Seals as well as Arctic Terns and Great Skuas.

In addition to the abundant wildlife, Mousa is also home to Mousa Broch - an impressive Iron Age fortress tower which stands 13m in height and is the best preserved of its type.

After a bracing walk we return to the boat and return to the coach and then back to your ship in Lerwick.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) over some rocks and grassy terrain. Operation is based on favorable weather and sea conditions. Binoculars are suggested for the best viewing of wildlife, although their sightings cannot be guaranteed. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable sportswear in layers with sturdy, flat, and closed-toe hiking shoes and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. This tour is recommended for guests who are in good physical condition and experienced hikers. Due to local average temperatures, the coaches are air-cooled.

Jarlshof & Scenic Mainland Drive

Discover the pristine natural beauty and history of the Shetlands during this half-day sightseeing excursion to Jarlshof and Hoswick, and a scenic mainland drive.

Jarlshof

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate one-hour drive south to Jarlshof. Unearthed in the winter of 1896 by a violent storm, this archaeological site spans more than 4,000 years, and offers a unique insight into life during the Stone Age,late-Bronze Age, Iron Age, Pictish Era, Norse Era, and the Middle Ages. The remains of these settlements are sprawled over a low green promontory by the sea. With your guide, explore oval-shaped Bronze Age houses, Iron Age broch and wheelhouses, Viking long houses, a Medieval farmstead, and a 16th-century Laird's House.

Hoswick

Next, drive to nearby Hoswick. Upon arrival in this small historic village, a stop is made at the Hoswick Visitor Centre. Here, learn about the history and culture of Shetland through interpretative displays and by observing the traditional knitting skills of the islanders. You may also purchase an original Shetland garment from the wide variety of Shetland wool items for sale in the knitwear shops.

Scenic Mainland Drive

Leaving Hoswick, commence the 30-minute drive back to the pier. Along the way, pass by small agricultural areas where sheep farming is important. See the distinctive black-and-brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, and small crofting communities nestled on narrow peninsulas near the inlets of the sea. Peat is now rarely used in Shetland to heat homes but as you cross the moors en route to the pier in Lerwick, you pass by the areas where it is still cut .

Lerwick Lodberries Walk

Your walking tour continues on to Lerwick's elegant Town Hall and Fort Charlotte, which has dominated Lerwick since the 17th century and offers panoramic views extending out across the harbour and island of Bressay.

Continue to the fascinating Shetland Museum which you can visit at leisure after the walking tour to learn more about Shetland's heritage and culture. This award-winning museum has over 3,000 artefacts on two floors, a wealth of easily accessible archive material, a temporary exhibition area, Boat Hall and Sheds. The exhibits are beautifully displayed and very well interpreted - a visit not to be missed!

At the conclusion of your walking tour, you may return directly to the pier with your guide, or opt to remain in the Old Town to browse the local craft and knitwear shops at your leisure before walking back to the pier.

Shetland Seabirds and Seals Boat Tour

Experience the spectacular cliffs, seabirds, seal colonies, and abundant marine life of the Shetland Sea during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing cruise excursion.

Lerwick, Catamaran, Underwater Camera, Marine Life

Depart the pier for the short walk (or a short bus transfer) to your awaiting, twin-engine catamaran. After receiving your safety and boating instructions, embark the comfortable catamaran, which features lots of interior and exterior space for viewing Shetland's spectacular seabird and seal colonies. The catamaran also includes underwater viewing with a remote-controlled mini-submarine, which offers a unique and unforgettable showing of the teeming marine life below the surface of the Shetland Sea.

Shetland Sea Cruise, Noss Cliffs and National Nature Reserve, Bressay, Seabirds, Seal Colonies

During your scenic, approximately three-hour catamaran cruise, your ornithologist, captain and wildlife guide takes you on the ultimate Shetland wildlife experience. Enjoy breath-taking vistas and photo opportunities of some of the less-accessible cliffs of Shetland and awesome Noss Cliffs, then cruise around the Noss National Nature Reserve and Bressay to observe Shetland's abundant seabirds, seals, marine life, scenic views, and geology. Your tour concludes back at the pier. Upon arrival, disembark the catamaran and commence the short walk or shuttle transfer back to your ship.

Spectacular Northmavine

Discover the charming villages, unforgettable landscapes and breath-taking coastline of northern Shetland during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Lerwick, Mavis Grind and Northmavine

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive towards Northmavine, the northernmost part of the mainland of Shetland, via the North Road, Strand Loop, Girlsta, Voe, Brae, and Mavis Grind, which is approximately 35 yards (about 32 metres) wide at its narrowest point. This is significant not only because it is the gateway to Northmavine, but it is also said to be the only place in the U.K. where you can toss a stone across land from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.

Tangwick Haa Museum, Braewick Café and 'The Drongs'

Next, a visit is made to the Tangwick Haa Museum. This 17th-century laird's house features a fascinating collection of artefacts that offer a unique insight into the harsh lifestyle of people living in this remote area during that time. Following your guided tour of the museum, proceed for a refreshment stop at the Braewick Café, which offers splendid views of the famous sea stacks, 'The Drongs'.

Eshaness Lighthouse, Atlantic Ocean and Geological Formations

Your last stop is at the Eshaness Lighthouse. Built in 1929 by David and Charles Stevenson, uncles of Robert Louis Stevenson, the Eshaness Lighhouse is the last of the Stevenson lighthouses to be built in Shetland. Upon arrival, linger on the clifftop and take in the scenery and geological forms. Few places in Shetland, or perhaps even Britain, rival Eshaness. The ferocity of the Atlantic has contributed to the spectacular geological formations found here, which include sea stacks, natural arches, deep clefts, caves, and cliffs, which are home to an abundance of seabirds.

At the conclusion of your visit, re -board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier

The Shetland Pony Experience

Experience a unique opportunity to pet, brush and handle adorable Shetland ponies during this fun-filled and interactive, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Lerwick, Scalloway Viewpoint, Meal Beach

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Burra via the town centre of Lerwick, capital of Shetland, the Scalloway Viewpoint and a photo stop at Meal Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Shetland. The beach is approximately 300 yards (about 274 metres) away from the car park along a boarded walkway.

Burra Island, Shetland Pony Experience, Pet, Brush and Handle Ponies, Indoor-Rides for Children

One of the smaller Shetland Islands, Burra is connected to the mainland by a series of bridges and the island of Trondra. Upon arrival, proceed to the Shetland Pony Experience. You are greeted by the friendly, local owners and separated into smaller groups. Next, enjoy a rare opportunity to pet, brush and handle the ponies; any children may also take a supervised indoor ride.

Beach Walk and Picture-Taking with Shetland Ponies

Following your up-close encounter with the adorable little foals, you are invited to lead one of the ponies a few hundred yards (about 183 metres) down to a beautiful and secluded beach, and have your photo taken with these lovely animals. This positively authentic and fun Shetland experience is a must-see for horse and animal lovers alike. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
