Silversea Luxury Cruises To L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS

L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS
L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS

L’Anse aux Meadows is a National Historic Site in Newfoundland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Found at the very northern end of the Great Northern Peninsula, the area shows archaeological evidence of eight timber-framed turf structures, a complete Norse settlement established more than 1,000 years ago similar to those found in Greenland and Iceland. It still is the only authenticated Norse site in North America and indicates the first European presence in the New World. The original site has been reburied after excavations to ensure protection from deterioration. View more

Replicas of Norse houses, a workshop, a boat shed and an old Norse ship have been set up at Norstead a few hundred meters northeast of the original site.

Excursions in L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS

Doctor to the North

Learn the story of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, doctor and pioneer, and explore the scenic fishing communities of northern Newfoundland.

The story of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell is one of the most compelling stories of the north. He was renowned for bringing medicine and education to the Inuit and poor European settlers along the harsh Labrador Coast. His adventures were required reading in Eastern Canada, and taught school children how to survive while adrift on an ice pan.

Depart the pier for the approximate 45-minute drive to the Grenfell Interpretation Centre in St. Anthony. Look for moose and icebergs as you travel along the scenic coastal highway through small fishing communities.

Grenfell Interpretation Centre

The centre interprets the life and times of Dr. Grenfell through a gallery of interpretive paneling and displays. They tell the story of the truly inspirational Dr. Grenfell, the young English doctor who in 1892 visited Newfoundland and founded the Grenfell Mission. Among the displays you will see the old instruments used for surgery a century ago and artefacts gathered from a life of arctic adventure and global philanthropy.

Grenfell House Museum

Visit the home of Dr. Grenfell, his wife Anne and their three children and gain insight into the day-to-day life of an early 20th-century, small town Doctor and pioneer. The Woodland trail behind the hours is for active passengers only.

Re-board the coach for the shore 15-minute drive to Fishing Point Lookout with a hiking trail and a small wildlife exhibit.

Your tour concludes back at the pier.

Please note: This tour involves walking a moderate amount of walking 06 to 1.2 miles (1-2 kilometre) of both level and uneven terrain. It is not recommended for guests who utilise a wheelchair or those with limited mobility. There are about 40 steps overall to negotiate. Comfortable layered clothing, weather-appropriate outerwear and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. This tour operates in a local schoolbus.

Viking Experience

Wander the new world home of Leif Ericson and learn about the Norse that explored North America over 10 centuries ago.

UNESCO Site Norstead

Depart the pier for the short 10-minute drive aboard a local school bus for the UNESCO Site Norstead, a recreated Norse Village. Discovered in 1960 by Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and is the only authenticated Norse settlement in North America.

Visit the interpretive centre and then join your guide on a tour of the Viking ruins and the longhouse to discover what life was like for the Viking encampment in 1000 AD.

A short drive brings you to Norstead, the recreated Norse Village. See the replica of the Viking Knarr Snorri, a boat that sailed from Greenland to here and named for the first European child born in North America. Learn to throw an axe, spin yarn or take a pottery lesson.

Following your tour of the village, re-board the bus for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves moderate walking approximately 2 kilometres (1.24 Miles) in total at Norstead, over hilly, grassy and uneven ground and a few steps to negotiate leading from the interpretation centre to the trails. It is not recommended for guests utilising wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. Comfortable layered clothing, weather-appropriate outerwear and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. This tour operates in a local schoolbus.
