Silversea Luxury Cruises To FREDERICIA

FREDERICIA

A warm welcome by locals can always be expected at this Danish port, and after a short stroll on the beach, a dip in the sea, and a bicycle ride around the city’s historic old town and fortress why not travel the 37 miles/60 kilometres to Odense to the birthplace of Denmark’s great children’s author, Hans Christian Andersen. Visit Andersen’s childhood home to (re)discover the works of this emblematic writer. View more

The adjacent museum is particularly interesting as it allows a full exploration of Andersen’s creative talents and gives an idea of his enormous imagination – which was not just limited to the fairy tales that are so loved by children the world over. Do look out for the paper cuttings, which are superb in their delicacy and handling.

Panoramic Fredericia, Scenic Nature & “Clay Museum”

Fredericia Fortress Town Tour

Begin with a half-hour narrated bus tour of the fortress town Fredericia, offering fascinating examples of Danish architecture that pre-date the establishment of the town in 1650 by several hundred years. Medieval churches display their 12th and 13th century ages with pure white humble exteriors, and while the area adjusted to Reformation, the architecture retains to this day the symbolic use of a white facade to open the spirit to the sky, as expressed in the latest example, Lyng Church, consecrated in 1994.

Take a moment to explore the beautifully preserved ramparts of Fredericia on foot before heading to the next destination.

Lille Baelt and Danish Museum of Ceramic Art

Afterwards, drive across the "Lille Baelt" (Little Belt), which was the first bridge in Denmark designed with heated lanes, in 1970. Soon thereafter, arrive at the Danish Museum of Ceramic Art. As the only ceramic museum in the Nordic Region, it possesses an impressive collection of the world-renowned Royal Copenhagen porcelain and represents Denmark's proud design tradition throughout 235 years of history. Browse the museum's changing exhibitions of modern Danish and international art, craft and design. Stroll the beautiful sculpture park or visit the attractive design shop. With time on your own, take a moment to relax in the cozy café situated with a beautiful view over Little Belt.

After an hour and a quarter of exploration at the Museum, enjoy a scenic half-hour drive back to the Fredericia pier.
