Silversea Expedition Cruises To EASTER ISLAND

EASTER ISLAND
EASTER ISLAND

Discovered (by the Western world) on Easter Sunday, 1722, Easter Island is one of the most isolated places on the face of the Earth, some 2,300 miles from the Chilean mainland. Although more Polynesian than South American in character, the 64-square mile island was annexed by Chile in 1888, and is now famous as the world’s largest ‘open air museum’ on account of the Moai, or human-like stone statues, that can be found on the island. The island’s national park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. View more

The Moai remain very much a mystery, which archaeologists are still trying to unlock. The ancient language of the Rapa Nui is one of the keys to understanding this culture. One of the other mysteries are the texts written on the so called ‘rongo rongo tablets’. The island owes its origin to three volcanoes: Poike and Rano Kau had erupted first and were later connected with Maunga Terevaka‘s eruption. It is not known when or how the island was first populated, but the most credible theory suggests that the Rapa Nui people came from other Pacific islands. Scientists debate as to when this occurred, the earliest claim sees this happening in the 4th century AD. In addition to the cultural and archaeological interest, there are two beautiful beaches, transparent waters, and a few coral reefs as might be expected of a Pacific Island.

Excursions in EASTER ISLAND

Cultural Easter Island

Experience the ancient Polynesian culture and volcanic beauty of Easter Island during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Ahu Tahai and Ancient Statues

Depart the pier for the short drive to Ahu Tahai. One of the oldest ancient statue sites on the island, this impressive complex dates from the 6th century and consists of three different ahu sites. During your visit, view the statues at Ahu Tahai, Ahu Ko Te Riku and Ahu Vai Ure/Uri.

Rano Raraku Volcano

Next, proceed for a visit to the Rano Raraku Volcano, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival, take a guided trek up by the walls of the volcano, where hundreds of statues can be observed in various stages of completion. Along the way, you may opt to follow a second steep trail up to the crater of the volcano. Here, view its towering walls, natural reservoir, and enclosed garden with priceless Polynesian and native species.

Ahu Tongariki

Your last stop is at Ahu Tongariki. The largest ahu on the island, this magnificent platform holds fifteen moai. This site was completely destroyed by a tsunami in 1960, but the ahu was restored from 1992-1995 by the University of Chile. Renowned for its breath-taking landscape, Ahu Tongariki features huge, almost vertical sea cliffs along its shores; the blue waves crashing into them offer wonderful photo opportunities. Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of activity and walking for approximately 0.57 miles (0.9 kilometres) on gravel roads, uneven terrain and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. The hike at Rano Raraku volcano is a soft walk along its walls to learn about the creation of the moais. Optional independent walk up to the summit is not possible. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and bottled water from the ship. The tour sequence may vary. National Forest Corporation park fee of USD $60.00 is not included and will be charged to your shipboard account. This is a one-time fee and guests taking two excursions will only pay the fee once. There is a charge of USD $1.00 per use to use restroom facilities at the Rano Raraku volcano site. Souvenir shops require payment in Chilean Pesos or US Dollars only, no credit cards accepted. Due to local average temperatures, vehicles are not equipped with air conditioning.

Silver Shore Privato - SCUBA Exclusive (One Tank Dive)

Experience the marvel of diving into one of the clearest waters in the world with a visibility up to 60 meters in the warm waters of the Hanga Roa Bay on this half day Silver Shore Privato tour. Scuba diving on the island is very popular, receiving hundreds of divers from around the world searching for one of the clearest waters in the planet. Immersing yourself in this part of the Pacific is certainly a fascinating adventure as it takes you through a stunning underwater volcanic landscape.

Depart the pier for the short drive to the diving centre where you will fill out a health certificate, gear up, view the brief safety instructions and check your equipment.

Now, board the vessel and head out for the immersion point. Throughout the ride you will see countless caves, cliffs, arches and bridges that were created by the volcanic origin of the island. Most fish are endemic and with bright colours which live in an immense amount of corals. One of the biggest attractions of the marine fauna of Rapa Nui is the sea turtles (Honu), which are often seen in Hanga Roa Bay. Depending on the skill and experience of each guest and based on the weather conditions, the diving route chosen may vary.

Those with diving certification may plunge down to 75 feet (23 meters) and see the submerged Moai in front of the cove. This moai, although not an original carving, was submerged in 2004 by Rapa Nui diver Mike Rapu in memory of his paternal grandfather and it has become one of the most popular diving spots. It is a beautiful setting with walls of coral and abundant Po'o'poo; a species of horse mackerel reaching adulthood at 3.2 feet (100 centimetres).

Those who are less experienced can enjoy dives between 32-39 feet (10-12 metres) and will still enjoy the stunning underwater volcanic landscape.

Lastly return to the dive centre to de-gear and enjoy some refreshments and leisure time at the local nearby coffee shop before boarding the vehicle for the short ride back to the ship.

Please Note: This Silver Shore Privato tour is for all level divers and requires an extensive amount of activity. It is suitable for guests in good physical condition and able to successfully complete a PADI medical questionnaire and liability release. This tour is for up to 5 guests per boat and only requires 1 ticket be purchased. Charges can be split among suites on board. Guests must have dived within the last 6 months in order to participate and must bring a dive log. Guests may wish to bring their own mask and snorkel. Nitrox is not provided. The actual dive site will be determined by the captain/dive master based on weather and sea conditions. The dive profile will be determined by the dive master. Participants should wear a swimsuit under a cover-up, sun protection and bring a towel from the ship. This is a 1 tank dive. We suggest you book well in advance as this tour has limited availability. This tour must be cancelled 48 hours prior to the saildate to avoid penalties.
