Silversea Luxury Cruises To BANJUL

BANJUL

Emerging from The Gambia’s wild mangrove swamps, Banjul sits at the spot where the River Gambia’s yawning mouth opens up to meet the salty tang of the Atlantic. Punctuated by a soaring 35-metre arched gateway, constructed following the coup d’etat that broke out in 1994, The Gambia’s capital is a place of scorched sunlight and faded colonial history, which provides flavours of laidback beachside relaxation mixed with exotic old-world African seaport charm. Despite its capital status, Banjul, with its soft lyrical name, often has more of a village feel to it. You’ll feel it most acutely as you explore the tight-knit labyrinth of Albert Market. The orchestral sounds of bartering rise to a pitched crescendo in the early morning – the perfect time to plunge in for a dizzying hit of sensory overload. A beloved gathering spot since the 19th century, the market is a riot of colour, with spit and nail stalls buckling below the weight of print fabrics, salt-crusted fish and colourful textiles. While the market can be a disorientating whir of activity, the city as a whole tends to move at a more lackadaisical, laidback pace. Visit Oyster Creek, to let an afternoon float by fishing rod in hand, as the sunlight slants across the water, and you treasure the hint of an afternoon breeze. Cormorants and pelicans step gingerly across the sinking mudflats that line the riverbank. Those craving cultural immersion can visit a local home for a cooking experience, helping to descale fresh red snapper, sipping baobab juice, and mixing spices into an authentic benachin pot.

Photos, map and archaeological finds help describe the African peoples and their colonial period of history. Next, travel to the Crocodile Pool of Bakau. Stop to take a few pictures before continuing on to the town of Serrekunda.

Serrekunda

Also spelled Serekunda and meaning "the home of the Sere family", this is the largest town in Gambia. It is really nine smaller villages that have merged over the years. Visit Musu Kebba tie dye and batik factory and see the design, waxing, and boiling of the fabrics. Afterwards, return to the ship.

Magic Island

Village of Kuloro, Brikama Animal Market

After departing the port by mini-bus drive past small villages and forest towards Kuloro, a historic village in Kombo East, with a stop en-route at the Brikama Animal Market. Here start your walk towards the quarry. Along the way you will see several gardens, spend some time with the women, and observe daily life Visit the local quarry where men and women mine gravel for building purposes. See the people of village digging and filtering the stones from the dusty sand.

Farasutu Forest

Our next visit is the Farasutu Forest. It is a relict (a surviving remnant of a natural phenomenon).

It might be best described as a "wet evergreen forest' during the rains - normally June to October. About a century ago most of the Gambia was reported to be covered by dense and also impenetrable forest even after large areas had ben cleared for groundnut civilization. At that time the forests were rich in wildlife and habitat for a variety of large mammals which are nowadays rare (such as hippopotamus and waterbuck.) Farasutu Forest is among the few remaining and now isolated forest patches left in the whole of the Gambia. The section which is now the reserve was in earlier days used as a place for ceremonial male and female circumcisions and was therefore spared. The forest is now home to various species of birds, crocodiles and monitor lizards.

Baobab Island, Buffet Lunch

Set out to Baobab Island by boat and enjoy unique 'Baobab Island' with its birds, surrounded by nature. Enjoy a welcome drink, made out of the fruits of the Baobab tree and the buffet lunch that will take place at the Island. All prepared 'Gambian Style' by the chef.

Enjoy your time at the island, until we will set off for the next adventure.

Pirogue (boat ride)

A local pirogue is any one of various small boats, particularly dugouts and native canoes. The word is French and is derived from Spanish pigarua which comes from the Carib piraua. Pirogue does not refer to a specific kind of boat, but is a generic term for small native boats in regions once colonized by France and Spain, and are usually dugouts made from a single log. Sail along the mangroves for approximately 2 hours and enjoy a short glimpse of the city and the port of Banjul.

A 15 minute drive will return you to the port.
