Silversea Luxury Cruises A COSTA MAYA QUITANA ROO

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Costa Maya, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Costa Maya is hot! Not only does the temperature average the high 20s in ˚C (or mid-80s in ˚F), the destination enjoys a reputation of being the thinking traveller’s Mexican getaway. And unsurprisingly so: miles of unspoilt coastline, cuisine of incomparable flavour and Mayan ruins that are both mystical and magical are just the beginning. Add in the world’s second largest coral reef and turquoise Caribbean seas, and you have a destination that beggar’s belief. Costa Maya is a welcome break from the more populous Mexican beaches to the north. View more

While there is certainly enough to keep the beach lover occupied – think miles of undeveloped powdery white sand and warm seas packed with technicolour fish, the appeal of Costa Maya lies perhaps in the hinterland. The virgin rainforest is not only home to sacred pyramids and temples that date back to 200 BC, but also hundreds of species of flora and fauna. Deer, armadillo, gray fox, spider and howler monkeys are all common visitors, while jaguars, pumas and even tapirs are known to live deeper in the dense jungle. Set along the Mexican peninsula from Sian Kaan all the way down to Belize, Costa Maya is a relative newcomer to the Mayan Riviera. The area left undeveloped for hundreds of years due to inadequate roads, thus many surrounding villages have remained untouched. As tourism took off in the late 20th century, savvy travellers began to look further afield for a taste of real Mexico. This they found in Quintana Roo, and more importantly, Costa Maya.

Costa Maya Jeep & Beach Tour

Enjoy the perfect combination of lush jungle and turquoise blue sea during this half-day excursion by Jeep, including a beach lunch.

Mahahual

Join your guide on Costa Maya's original eco-adventure as you drive along isolated terrain, and on to a white, sand beach. Your bilingual guide escorts you to the vehicle which is shared by 4 other guests. Then follow the lead vehicle in caravan-style through the quiet fishing village of Mahahual. As you drive through the village, your guide explains how this small town has rapidly turned into one of Mexico's most promising cruise ship destinations.

The road surface can be quite rough, so hold onto your hats, as you follow your guide over the jungle road. Along the way, encounter endless stretches of beach with the occasional fishing village and view a side of the Caribbean that not everyone has had a chance to see.

Pleasure Beach

After an hour drive down the coastline, arrive at 'Pleasure Beach'. The white powder sand on this remote beach may be the perfect destination after your drive. During your stay at this beach outpost, enjoy lunch, relax in the clear blue water or stroll down the coastline. Take in the pleasant rays of the Caribbean sun or play a game of beach volleyball. This stop will last approximately one hour.

At the end of your beach stop, re-board your Jeeps for the return drive through the jungle and on to Costa Maya.

Leave the crowded pier behind and head off to the secluded Costa Maya Channels for an exclusive fly-fishing tour. No need to be an expert, our professional guides will help you every step of the way showing you techniques to catch Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and many others in a catch and release format.

The Mayan Indians once used these fishing spots to transport wood, fish, seashells, and conch from the Costa Maya peninsula to the mainland. They were later used by the Maya to elude capture by the conquering Spanish and sometime later, pirates hid in them to ambush cargo ships and Spanish galleons as they made off with treasure taken from the Maya. After centuries of isolation the channels have become a perfect sanctuary for fish and birds of all species. These days these channels and flats boast Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Snapper, and Snook to name a few and are ranked by many anglers as one of the most privileged fishing areas in the world.

Depart the pier by van for the approximate 45 to 60 minute drive to the dock to board your panga-style fishing vessel. Soft drinks and snacks will be available during your 4-hour fishing experience. Following your time on the water, re-join your transfer for the return drive to the pier.

Kohunlich & Dzibanche Mayan Ruins

Experience two of the most magnificent and exciting Mayan archaeological sites ever discovered during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion to Dzibanche and Kohunlich.

Costa Maya, Dzibanche Archaeological Site, Plazas, Temples of the Lintels, Owls and Captives

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 2.25-hour drive towards the Belizean border en route to the Dzibanche Archaeological Site. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of its ancient dwellings, pyramids, plazas and temples. Renowned for its beautiful pottery and splendid temples hidden within the jungle, this once-ruling city is sure to captivate your imagination. The most important complex at Dzibanche is comprised of several plazas surrounded by palaces, and platforms from which temples decorated with Peten-style crests rise. During your visit, see the Temple of the Lintels, and take an opportunity to climb the tallest temple for a wonderful view of the Temple of the Owls and Temple of the Captives.

Kohunlich Archaeological Site, Temple of the 27 Steps, Buildings, Courtyards, Patios, Acropolis

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to Kohunlich, a city with beautiful forest walks filled with toucans, monkeys and flowers. Upon arrival, proceed to the recently-excavated Kohunlich Archaeological Site, which is named after the giant cahoon palm trees that inhabit this immense site. Temple of the Masks, Enormous, Sculpted Masks, Lunch

Guests who are up to the challenge can climb the towering Temple of the Masks, built in honour of the sun god. Along the way, view an impressive and unique collection of enormous, sculpted masks that reach approximately eight feet (about 2.4 metres) in height and flank the front stairway of the temple. Following your visit, re-board your coach and proceed for a Mexican lunch at either the Bacalar or Lagoon restaurants.
