Silversea Luxury Cruises A TAURANGA (Bay Of Plenty)

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Tauranga, New zeland

Tauranga is New Zealand’s sunny capital – with wide sweeping beaches and surfers curling across cresting waves. Climb to the top for spectacular views of the natural harbour, or take winding coastal footpaths to explore the unfolding scenery. An entry point to the vast indent of the Bay of Plenty, the volcanic peak of Mount Maunganui is a fittingly dramatic welcome. Brooding, geothermal energy creates spectacular natural attractions across this region, while plunging waterfalls, and fascinating Maori culture ensures that the Bay of Plenty has a lot to offer visitors. Said to receive New Zealand’s highest amount of sunshine, the hanging kiwi, citrus fruit and avocados add an exotic touch to the area’s landscape - especially around Te Puke. Vibrant teal and orange colours await at the stunning geothermal area of Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, where mud pools bubble and steam rises from the earth. There are more hot pools, and some of the country’s best scenery, at Lake Rotoiti - where you can kayak across the smooth surface and enter a cave that glows gentle blue, with its darkened roof illuminated by glittering glow worms. Enter New Zealand’s fantasy world, with a visit to some of the country's celebrated filming spots - which have featured as doubles for JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth's fantasy settings. Offshore, the wonderful White Island’s volcanic cone peeks from the waves, and New Zealand's most active volcano certainly knows how to put on a show, belching out smoke across the water.

'Bay of Plenty' Foodie Tour

Explore the splendid flavours, beauty and history of the 'Bay of Plenty' during this half-day tasting and sightseeing excursion.

Mt. Maunganui Beachfront

Depart the pier for the scenic drive along the Mt. Maunganui beachfront en route to avocado and kiwifruit orchards. Along the way, discover where the local foodies dine, and what makes New Zealand cuisine so unique during this fun and interesting tasting and sightseeing tour.

Speciality Food Shops, Tastings of Local Specialities, Kiwifruit and Avocado Orchards

Visits are made to specialty food stores, 'hole-in-the-wall' food shops and out-of-the-way foodie venues, along with working kiwifruit and avocado orchards. From stop-to-stop, meet some of the local food heroes, learn why they decided to make this seaside destination home and taste their locally-made specialities. Depending on their seasonal availability, you might sample avocado or macadamia nut oils, famous fish and chips, kiwi fruit, avocado, baked goods, specialty ice cream, local cheeses, 'manuka' honey, and/or luscious berries among others.

Countryside Drive, Photo Stops, 'Bay of Plenty'

Your foodie excursion is not all about the food. After sampling a variety of local specialities, traverse some stunning countryside and stop for photos at panoramic vantage points. Along the way, see and learn about the history, development and culture of Tauranga and its surrounds, and the reason Captain Cook called it the 'Bay of Plenty'. At the conclusion of your tour, commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking for approximately 50 yards (about 46 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility. This tour is not suitable for guests with food allergies. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Flavours of the Waikato Region

Experience the farm-life and flavours of the Red Barn in an interactive new way during this scenic and fun-filled, full-day excursion with lunch.

Depart the pier with your guide for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to the Red Barn. En route, traverse the beautiful countryside, see paddocks full of sheep, horses, beef cattle and dairy cows, and enjoy informative commentary about the history of the region. Located on the Rock Spring Farm, a stunning working dairy farm in the Waikato region, the Red Barn was well-known at the turn of the 20th century for being a livery stable. Stagecoaches stopped at the Red Barn during long journeys to exchange their tired horses, then carried on with their voyage across the greater Waikato.

Scenic Farm Drive, Red Barn, Interactive Butter-Making and Tasting

Upon arrival, take a short sightseeing drive through the picturesque farm, then proceed to the Red Barn. Following a welcome refreshment and comfort stop, learn about the history of the Rock Spring Farm and Red Barn, then try your hand at making your own butter during an interactive butter-making experience. Once churned, you can sample it on fresh, locally-baked breads.

Interactive, Six-Course Degustation Lunch, Free Time, Park-Like Grounds

Next, proceed for a six-course degustation lunch with wine. During lunch, you are invited to participate in the preparation of one of the courses, and enjoy a 'sensory' experience between courses three-and-four. The chefs also share stories of the fresh, locally-sourced ingredients used for each dish, from the buttermilk of the farm's dairy cows to the fish from area lakes and rivers. After lunch, some free time is made available to stroll about the property and relax in the park-like grounds, and even take some photos whilst seated on 'Bertie', the vintage tractor. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven and gravel surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the entrance to the Red Barn.
