Istria off the Beaten Track

Istra Peninsula, Ucka Mountain, Historical Town of Roc, Frescoes Workshop Presentation

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive over Ucka Mountain en route to the historical town of Roc. The town is an important cultural monument, as it has a well-preserved medieval town walls with two entrances, a Roman lapidarium, a Venetian bombarda cannon and a functional watchtower. Furthermore, it has the Romanesque church of St Anthony dating back to the 11th century, the small St Roch Church with several notable 14th century frescoes representing St Paul and the Apostles, as well as the St Bartholomew parish church built from the 14th century onward with its prominent 26 m (85 ft) high steeple erected in 1676. Numerous other smaller artifacts are preserved in the ancient buildings. After the short sightseeing tour, visit a local artist's workshop and find out the process of frescoes making.


Hum - The smallest town in the World

Afterwards, re-board your coach for a short drive to Hum, a town located in the central part of Istria, on a hill approximately 1,145 feet (about 349 metres) above the Mirna Valley. This small fortified habitation dates from 1102, and has maintained all the features of medieval urban architecture and organization. Hum has a population of only 17 people (2001 census), but is officially a town, and named the 'smallest town in the world' by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Upon arrival, commence your guided walking tour of Hum. The town's western side is enclosed by town walls; on the remaining sides, houses are built into the defensive walls. A bell and watch tower was built in 1552 as part of the town's defences adjacent to the town's loggia. The present Church of St. Jerome, with its Classical-style façade, was built in 1802 on the side of an earlier church. Written in the second-half of the 12th century, the Hum Glagolitic wall writings are preserved in the church, and among the oldest examples of Croatian Glagolitic literary culture in the Middle Ages. After the sightseeing tour, you will have an opportunity to enjoy in tasty Istrian food before continuing with a scenic drive toward Adriatic Coastline and Rijeka.

Situated at the entrance to the canyon is an old sawmill, today a restaurant, that tells a special story about the region's past and complements the bucolic scene. From this starting point, a guide will lead guests for approximately two hours hike on a lush trail ending at the Kamacnik Spring. Along the way, you will be surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature; walking next to the creek, crossing wooden bridges and enveloping yourself in the lush forest and foliage around you.

At the conclusion of the hike, guests will arrive back at the Kamacnik Bistro where a snack will be enjoyed before re-boarding the coach for the return journey.

Postojna Caves in Slovenia

Explore the most visited cave system in Europe during this unforgettable, half-day excursion to the Postojna Caves.


Scenic Drive to Postojna

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to the Postojna Caves. This (20-kilometre) long karst cave system comprises a web of underground passages, galleries and chambers, which has in almost 200 years been visited by over 33 million people. It is both the largest cave of the Classical Karst, and the show cave with the largest numbers of visitors in Europe.

Upon arrival, board the cave train for the 10-minute drive to the Great Mountain (the ride takes 10 minutes). Here, take a guided and narrated, approximately one-hour walking tour through the cave passages. The temperature inside the cave ranges between approximately 46 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit (eight and 10 degrees Celsius), and the relative humidity is 90-100%, so suitable clothing and footwear are recommended.


Free Time in Postojna

There are no steps on the entire trail whatsoever; however, negotiating some rather steep parts is required. The walking tour ends in the Concert Hall. Here, re-board the cave train for the ride back to the exit. Following your visit to the Postojna Caves, some free time is made available to browse Postojna at your leisure before re-boarding your coach and commencing the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

In fact, this is the magic territory of prized Istrian truffles, the buried treasures and culinary king of these white and black pearls. The Buzet area is also renowned for its excellent olive oil, exquisite wines and distinctive Istrian grappa which, when served with traditional Istrian culinary fare, evokes the spirit of this ancient region.


Buzet Walking Tour, Free Time and Aura Tasting House

Upon arrival in Buzet, take a guided, uphill walk to this hilltop town. Following a guided stroll here, some free time is made available to explore your surrounds. Afterward, proceed to the Aura Tasting House. Aura produces exclusive traditional products such as brandies, jams, and other autochthonous products made of wild herbs and wild fruits. These ingredients are picked in an ecologically-clean environment on the slopes of Cicarija Mountain, far from roads and inhabited settlements.

Aura production includes interesting delicacies ranging from jams made of nettle, mint, dandelion, sage, elder, fig, plum, and cornel. Aura also produces brandies aged for three years, with half a year in maceration, then settled and distilled up to six times over the ensuing 2.5 years in order to naturally expel the sediment. Besides the traditional Biska, Medica and Teranino, they produce brandies made of sage, mint, cornel, carob, olives, almond, wild pear, wild apple, rose petals, hip, forest fruit, and Travarica. Aura is also the sole producer of Biska, which is derived from white mistletoe picked exclusively from the apple tree. After a unique and delicious tasting of three types of brandies, jams, cookies, almonds, and dark chocolates, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.
