Silversea Luxury Cruises A OBAN (Argyll)

OBAN (Argyll)

The Gateway to the Hebridean islands, and the Western Highlands, Oban is a picturesque place of endless Victorian charm and elegance. The name means ‘Little Bay,’ and this humble town swells dramatically in size during summer, when it welcomes thousands of visitors to revel in its serene setting amid some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Three storeys of elegant, slate-roofed buildings gather before the inky expanse of the Firth of Lorn, offering a warm welcome to the lochs, fantasy castles, and green and gold glens of the Highlands. The unmissable granite curve of McCaig’s Tower stands high over the town, and beautiful views unravel down below it. Set among a scattering of crumbling coastal castles and sweeping panoramic vistas, Oban is Scotland at its most wild and romantic. Wander the quaint streets, sampling local artisan chocolates, or call in to the esteemed, history-steeped distillery - which has been perfecting Scotland’s famous export, smoky whiskey, since 1794. Head to the waterfront to breathe in the salt-whipped air and watch as boats fuss and walkers battle seagulls intent on stealing their fish and chips. A little further along, you’ll stumble across the romantic ruins of Dunollie Castle. Hop between the sandy beaches of nearby islands, and hike glacier-carved valleys among stags adorned with tree-like antlers. Or, embark on scenic coastal drives to the grand gardens of extraordinary stone castles. Nearby, Loch Fyne is renowned for its juicy seafood – in particular, plump oysters. Keep an eye on the smooth waters, basking sharks sometimes appear, cruising through the sea loch, hoovering up plankton. You can also visit the majestic rounded turrets of Inveraray Castle on the loch’s banks - a glorious Gothic Revival creation, plucked straight from a fairy-tale.

Inverawe Smokehouse with Lunch

Explore the history and flavours of one of the finest, award-winning smokehouses in Scotland during this immersive, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Oban, Inverawe, Inverawe Smokehouse

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to the Inverawe Smokehouse. As it has done for hundreds of years, smoke gently rises from between the trees on the banks of the River Awe as it winds its way into the mighty Glen Etive. However, since the old iron furnaces that once burned across the landscape have gone cold, the smoke now rises from the Inverawe Smokehouse. One of the country's finest, award-winning smokehouses, the Inverawe Smokehouse has been family-owned since its inception, and ever-growing in popularity around the globe. Founded in the 1970s, the Inverawe Smokehouse uses the time-honoured method of traditional, slow-smoking over Highland oak that creates the distinct taste of the Highlands.

Guided Smokehouse Tour, Smoking Process Demonstration, Smokeboxes

Upon arrival, meet the current owner, Patrick Campbell-Preston, who escorts you on a guided tour. Along the way, visit the Smokehouse, where the produce is smoked, filleted, prepared and packaged. Here, learn about the history of the Smokehouse, and see the iconic site of the smoke pouring from the chambers of the smokeboxes during a demonstration of the smoking process. Following your tour, proceed to Inverawe House.

Inverawe House, Buffet Lunch

Although it has been at the heart of the Campbell land for many centuries, today this centuries-old tower house remains a family home. Patrick welcomes you to his dining room to enjoy a buffet lunch featuring a selection of his traditional smoked products. Inverawe has collected an impressive number of awards for its food, and is in demand worldwide. It also has the distinction of holding a Royal Warrant, and has been supplying its smoked specialities to the Queen since 2001. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Departing the pier, drive one hour to arrive at the Glen Orientation Centre to set the scene for yourself, learning about the life and inhabitants of the Kilmartin Glen. Travel back over 5,000 years as you uncover the mysteries of this incredible place.

Kilmartin Glen

The Kilmartin Glen is replete with hundreds of cairns, megaliths, inscribed stones, hill-top forts and other monuments. While their meaning today is not fully known, anthropologists and astronomers concur that the orientation of these stone structures was likely meant to connect with the cycle of the seasons and the movements of stars, the moon and the sun.

Nether Largie Standing Stones

Meet your expert guide and take a walking tour of this memorable place. Accompanied by your guide, visit some of these prehistoric monuments in Kilmartin Glen. See the Nether Largie standing stones, four large monolithic stones called menhirs in two pairs that are spaced 70 m apart, with one single menhir in the centre. Around this structure are another 8 smaller stones (one of which is fallen).

Temple Wood and Nether Largie South Cairn

Visit also Temple Wood, a structure of two stone circles that may have been burial grounds in 3000 BC. A major highlight of this tour is the impressive Nether Largie South Cairn, the oldest monument of the linear cemetery and dates from the fourth millennium BC. Built in the Neolithic period, this burial chamber (called a chambered cairn) has been extensively excavated, uncovering archeological finds including arrowheads and pottery. Hear the history and theories of these remarkable monuments and their place in this unique landscape.

Make the return one-hour drive to the pier.
