Silversea Luxury Cruises A NAFPLION

NAFPLION
NAFPLION

Oraia (beautiful) is the word Greeks use to describe Nafplion. The town's old section, on a peninsula jutting into the gulf of Argos, mixes Greek, Venetian, and Turkish architecture; narrow streets, often just broad flights of stone stairs, climb the slopes beneath the walls of Acronafplia. Tree-shaded plazas surround neoclassic buildings. The Palamidi fortress—an elegant display of Venetian might from the early 1700s—guards the town. View more

Nafplion deserves at least a leisurely day of your undivided attention, and you may want to spend several days or a week here and use the city as the base from which to explore the many surrounding ancient sights.

Ancient Corinth & Canal Crossing

Discover the ancient glory of one of the most historic cities in Greece during this picturesque, half-day excursion to Corinth.

Corinth

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 75-minute drive to the once rich and powerful Corinth, an ancient city blessed with a superb location, fertile plains and virtually impregnable refuge. Excavations reveal that the ancient city was huge and wealthy; a survivor of numerous invasions but devastated by earthquakes.

Upon arrival in Corinth, take a guided walking tour of this historic old city. Along the way, view the platform, or 'bema', where the Roman governor tried St. Paul, and the striking Temple of Apollo, seven of whose original columns still stand. Next, walk through the remains of the Market Place, a colonnaded square once surrounded by many small shops. From here, visit the celebrated Fountain of Priene and Lechaion Road.

Corinth Canal

Enjoy a boat ride up incredible Corinth Canal which was an idea originally proposed in ancient times to link the Ionian and Aegean seas. When the magnitude of the task proved too large, a paved slipway was built to enable sailors to drag small ships across on rollers. This method was used until the 13th century, and the canal was finally completed in 1893. Following your visit, re-board your coach for the approximate one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1.5 hours and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight clothing and bring sun protection. The tour sequence may vary to avoid overcrowding. Unexpected delays may be experienced due to canal traffic and weather conditions which are beyond Silversea responsibility. Depending on Canal traffic, the trip through the Canal may be made twice, and if that is the case you will return to the original starting point rather than transiting completely. On Tuesdays, maintenance takes place in the Canal, in this case boat will transit half of the Canal and return to the original starting point.

Epidaurus & Mycenae with Lunch

Discover the scenic beauty and historic legacy of Epidaurus and Mycenae during this picturesque, half-day excursion with lunch.

Epidaurus

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 45-minute drive to Epidaurus. Situated on the cool slopes of a beautiful and wooded valley, Epidaurus was known throughout the Hellenic world for its unique medical facilities and healing treatments. The city was filled with curative spas and baths, and only priests had access to certain secret rites.

Theatre of Epidaurus

Most of the ruins of Epidaurus have been reduced to their foundations, with the exception of the astonishing theatre. Still used for special performances, the Theatre of Epidaurus is in an admirable state of preservation. Built into the ground, rather than above it, the theatre is renowned for its fantastic acoustics, which are heard during your visit.

Mycenae & Lunch

Next, re-board your coach and drive to the famous citadel of Mycenae via the Argos Plain. High above the confluence of two boulder-strewn ravines, Mycenae is entered by way of the Lion Gate, Europe's oldest piece of monumental statuary. Explore the Royal Palace, the shaft graves and the remains of the city walls, then attend an archaeological briefing within the Treasury of Artreus. After lunch at the Kolizeras restaurant, begin the approximate 40-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1 mile (1.7 km) and stairs to negotiate and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight, comfortable clothing and bring sun protection. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Tour order may vary.

Paladimi Fortress

Afterwards, re-board your coach for a return drive to Nafplion, where you will visit the fabulous Venetian fortress of Palamidi. Enjoy its splendid views over the hill of Argonauplia, the town of Nafplion and the Bourtzi offshore. The fortress is very well-preserved and this great mass of masonry, with walls and fortifications that made it impregnable, broods menacingly over the town.

Nafplion on Foot & Ouzo

Discover the beauty and romance of Nauplia on foot during this scenic and informative walking tour.

Nauplia Port and Kapodistriou Square and Park

Depart the pier on foot for a guided walking tour of Nauplia, which is dominated by the towering Palamidi Fortress. Begin with a look at the elegant Venetian houses and Neo-Classical buildings lining the port, then head to the Kapodistriou Square and Park to see statues dedicated to famous Greek leaders. Across from the statues is the current Town Hall building, once the country's first high school.

Museum of Komboloi and Syntagma Square

Next, walk through the back streets to see the old Catholic Church and Church of Agios Spyidon, which dates from 1702. From here, proceed to the Museum of Komboloi to learn about the origin of the 'worry beads' found throughout Greece. A stop is then made at popular Constitution Square, or 'Syntagma Square', for a visit to the Popular Art Museum, winner of the European Museum of the Year award in 1981.

Ouzo Tasting

Your last stop is at the Karonis Wine Shop, whose owner is regarded as a specialist on Greek wines and has written a number of books on the various wines of Greece. During your visit, sample a variety of 'mezes' and the favourite spirit of the Greeks, 'ouzo'. At the conclusion of your walking tour, return to the pier on foot.
