At the eastern end of Far East Russia lies Lavrentiya Bay. Further east across the narrow Bering Sea lies Alaska. Lavrentiya Bay was named by Captain James Cook on his third expedition in 1778 after the day he arrived in the bay—the feast day of Saint Lawrence.
