Silversea Luxury Cruises A ARRECIFE (Canary Islands)

ARRECIFE (Canary Islands)

Nestled on the east coast of Lanzarote, Arrecife takes its name from the rocky reefs and outcrops that dominate its coastline. This pretty working city has a friendly, authentic feel, and has managed to remain true to its roots as a historic fishing village. There’s a lot to explore, and whether you want to lie back on long swathes of opulent golden sand, or strap on hiking boots to crunch across Lanzarote’s scorched volcanic scenery, this versatile capital has so much to offer. View more

With castles, caves, sleepy beaches, and a glittering saltwater lagoon, Arrecife is the perfect place to get acquainted with the sun-kissed appeal of the Canary Islands. Lanzarote’s charcoal desert vistas radiate a remarkable luna-like quality, but dotted cacti, waving palms, and bursts of vibrant wildflowers add an accent of colour to the canvas. Arrecife itself boasts apricot-coloured beaches and labyrinthine lanes of white-wash buildings within its Old Quarter, where you can smell fresh fish grilling, and see locals dipping delicious local salty potatoes - papas arrugadas - into colourful sauces. An evening stroll along El Charco de san Gines is a must for watching fishing boats bobbing gently on the lagoon, and watching spectacular sunsets burning across the sky. Standing tall for more than four centuries, Castillo De San Gabriel is located on the tiny island of Islote de los Ingleses, and was once a target for pirates, who would appear menacingly on the Atlantic’s horison. The stalwart 16th-century fortress now serves as the History Museum of Arrecife, and exhibitions inside explore the evolution of the city, and the ancient culture of Lanzarote. The International Museum of Contemporary Art, meanwhile, displays modern and abstract works within the 18th-century San José Castle’s refined setting. See works from Cesar Manrique - the prominent artist and architect whose slick sixties style flair can be admired across the island.

Excursões em ARRECIFE (Canary Islands)

Cesar Manrique’s Island

Experience the world of César Manrique, a celebrated artist, landscape conservationist, and one of Lanzarote's best known citizens during this tour. The César Manrique Foundation is located in the studio-home that the artist lived in, situated in Taro de Tahiche (Lanzarote). It is probably the work that best represents Manrique's artistic and personal ideals.

Jardin del Cactus and Los Jameos del Agua

Cross the north-eastern part of the island to Jardin del Cactus, an unusual botanical garden where many species of cacti have been carefully arranged in a natural setting by Manrique himself. Re-board the coach and enjoy the scenery heading to the next destination - Los Jameos del Agua - a cave containing an underground lagoon and one of the best examples of Manrique's extraordinary vision.

César Manrique Foundation

Then visit Manrique's former home, now a museum. The house was designed by the artist, and combines his interest in traditional local architecture with his concerns about environmental protection. The museum contains Manrique's own private collection of contemporary art.

Castle of San José

Finally, proceed to Arrecife, the principal town on the island, for a visit of the Castle of San José, home to the Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum occupies what was once the cellar of this castle, built in 1799 during the reign of Charles III of Spain. Its spacious and elegant gallery houses a fine collection of abstract works, including several by Manrique, Picasso and Miró.

Following a short tour of the museum, a snack of local wine and cheese is served in the museum's restaurant overlooking the sea.

Your excursion will conclude back to the pier area.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking however visiting the caves requires negotiating 150 steps. Some uneven ground and low ceilings will be encountered at the Cesar Manrique House. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.

Fire Mountains & Dromedaries

Enjoy an excursion to Lanzarote's most unique region to admire a landscape of spectacular beauty and discover the island's unusual inhabitant - the dromedaries. A UNESCO biosphere reserve, Lanzarote is an intriguing island with an extraordinary geology of 300 volcanic cones and the landscape has a stark and otherworldly appearance, with the occasional bucolic, palm-filled valley juxtaposed with surreal, wrinkled black lava fields.

Depart the pier for one of nature's most fascinating phenomena, Montana de Fuego (Fire Mountains) in the Timanfaya National Park. Enjoy an excursion to Lanzarote's most unique region to admire a landscape of spectacular beauty and meet the island's unusual inhabitants - the Dromedary Camels.

Dromedary Ride

Stop at the camel station where the dromedary camels will transport you in a wicker basket-chair situated either side of the camel's hump. The 30-minute camel ride will be in a camel-train over the volcanic dunes, which lie at the entrance to the Timanfaya National Park.

Fire Mountains

A short distance further, enter the national park and get your first glimpse of the Fire Mountains - Lanzarote's main attraction. This mountain range emerged in 1730 as a result of massive volcanic eruptions. The whole area presents bizarre scenery reminiscent of a lunar landscape covered with cinder and slag. Earth temperatures here can reach 750 degrees Fahrenheit (398 degrees Celsius) close to the surface. Demonstrations by uniformed staff will show you the violent forces beneath the earth's crust, proving that the volcano is not extinct, but only dormant.

Driving through the haunting scenery of dark and barren lava cinders, topped by brooding red-black volcano cones, you will witness at close-hand a lunar landscape whose images nourish the imagination.

'Bodega'

The drive back to Arrecife goes through the wine producing area of La Geria. Vineyards dot the landscape with the vines, protected by semi-circular stone walls, making them look more like art than agriculture. A stop will be made at a 'bodega' for you to taste one of the local wines of Lanzarote.

Your tour will conclude back at the pier area.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 90 metres (99 yards) and negotiating steps. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair, as long as chair is collapsible. Guests are advised to take a wrap or jacket with them, as it may be windy up on Fire Mountain. We recommend wearing comfortable, flat, closed toe, walking shoes. Order of sites visited may vary depending on the day and traffic.

Golf in Lanzarote

Embrace the stunning beauty of Lanzarote in a unique new way during this relaxing, half-day golf outing at the Costa Teguise Resort.

Costa Teguide Golf Course

Depart the pier for the brief drive to the Costa Teguide Golf Course, one of the seven islands that form the Canary Island Archipelago and an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Nestled at the foot of an old volcano, this spectacular, 18-hole, Par-72 course is highlighted by a unique landscape of volcanic lava, cacti, lush tropical foliage, thousands of palm trees, and breath-taking vistas overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The course is designed to be both smooth and varied. Its numerous doglegs represent a challenge for professional players, whilst offering an attractive and enjoyable game for those of more modest skills. In addition to its privileged location, the course benefits from a warm, pleasant, year-round climate that is tempered by a sea breeze from the island's near-constant trade winds.

Please note: Programme involves moderate activity and includes green fees, roundtrip transportation and shared cart. Optional rentals and purchases are not a part of the programme and are to be paid directly to the pro shop. Golfers may wear soft-spiked golf shoes. Golf must be booked the latest 72 hours prior to play and is subject to cancellation charges if cancelled within this time. A minimum participation of two golfers is required to operate.

Grand Island Tour

Lanzarote is known as the 'Mythic Island', since the volcanic relief has sculpted breath-taking landscapes of almost lunar beauty. Explore the southern area of the island on this full-day outing to see parts of the island and the Fire Mountains.

Meet your guide and depart by coach from the Port of Arrecife, Capital of Lanzarote, to the southern part of the island.

Before leaving the city, drive past the San José Castle, an old fortress built at the end of the 17th-Century to protect the bay from the attacks of pirates. In 1974 it was turned into the International Museum of Contemporary Art. Continue on to the Fire Mountains at Timanfaya National Park.

Fire Mountains

Enter the National Park and get your first glimpse of the Fire Mountains - Lanzarote's main attraction. This mountain range emerged in 1730 as a result of massive volcanic eruptions. The whole area presents bizarre scenery reminiscent of a lunar landscape covered with cinder and slag. Earth temperatures here can reach 750 degrees Fahrenheit (399 degrees Celsius) close to the surface. You will see twigs thrown into crevices ignite in seconds, while water poured into the lava ground evaporates immediately into steam.

After your visit to the National Park, proceed through the La Geria Wine Region and briefly stop for a typical wine tasting at a local bodega.

Continue to the local restaurant Monumento al Campesino' designed by Cesar Manrique for a delicious luncheon. After lunch, take in the spectacular views at Mirador del Rio of Graciosa Island, the Chinjo Aracipelago, and the colourful salts pans at the bottom of the cliff.

Jameos del Agua

Arriving at Jameos del Agua, stop to admire one of César Manrique's magical designs, a natural saltwater lagoon connected to an underground volcano tube. Within the grotto's lava formations, Manrique incorporated a concert cave, a restaurant, and a bar.

An approximate 30-minute ride will take you back to the pier to re-join the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking but is mostly sightseeing from the coach with some walking over uneven surfaces and gravel. Visiting the cave requires negotiating 150 steps. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

Lanzarote Wine Route

The unusual vineyards of Lanzarote create a unique landscape - join this tour to discover more about the island's wines. This wine region in Spain is nowhere near the mainland, which is known for its high-quality, low-price table wines. Lanzarote, the most far-flung of the Canary Islands, is the birthplace of a number of prized artisan wines, the most noticeable feature about this windswept isle not far from West Africa is its landscape, which is unlike anything else in the world.

Despite its arid terrain, Lanzarote has created a noble heritage of wine-making characterised by its distinctive vineyards. During his exhibition 'Architects of Agriculture', César Manrique described the particular landscape of the vineyards as 'impressive, unique and unmistakable'.

La Geria

Depart the pier and drive to La Geria, the main agricultural area which has become what is called 'land art' and has been declared a protected natural area. The great eruption of 1730 - 1736 covered a third of the island and made the land unusable for growing crops, however farmers have found a way to use the land to their advantage. The black sand and volcanic rock walls, has a temperature regulating function, preserving the moist soil since the fields impede irrigation or the use of machinery.

Bodega El Grifo

Beginning in the 19th century, the Bodega La Geria was built and located in the centre of the wine region surrounded by typical vineyards. See the way of cultivation and taste some of the wines developed from the Muscat and Malvasia grapes. The next stop will be at Bodega El Grifo, the oldest winery in the Canaries and one of the oldest in Spain. Enjoy a wine tasting of 3 different wines, visit the museum completely devoted to the world of wine.

Monumento al Campesino

A short drive next takes you to Monumento al Campesino. This " Monumento " is made up of a series of buildings with the house museum and the peasant monument. They were built to immortalize the hard work of the peasant community of Lanzarote whose efforts materialized in "La Geria" an unique production of agricultural goods from a dry and arid land. The house museum contains a collection of utensils and instruments used by the peasant community throughout history, to work, transport and store products or simply to live.

Following this visit, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking and it is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, there are both paved surfaces and gravel at both wineries. Guests must be able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. Minimum age on this tour is 21 years old. The stops at 'La Geria' and 'El Grifo' include a visit to the bodega for the wine tasting and not the actual vineyard where the wine is produced. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, walking shoes and sun protection.
