Silversea Luxury Cruises A ARRECIFE (Canary Islands)

ARRECIFE (Canary Islands)

Nestled on the east coast of Lanzarote, Arrecife takes its name from the rocky reefs and outcrops that dominate its coastline. This pretty working city has a friendly, authentic feel, and has managed to remain true to its roots as a historic fishing village. There’s a lot to explore, and whether you want to lie back on long swathes of opulent golden sand, or strap on hiking boots to crunch across Lanzarote’s scorched volcanic scenery, this versatile capital has so much to offer. View more

With castles, caves, sleepy beaches, and a glittering saltwater lagoon, Arrecife is the perfect place to get acquainted with the sun-kissed appeal of the Canary Islands. Lanzarote’s charcoal desert vistas radiate a remarkable luna-like quality, but dotted cacti, waving palms, and bursts of vibrant wildflowers add an accent of colour to the canvas. Arrecife itself boasts apricot-coloured beaches and labyrinthine lanes of white-wash buildings within its Old Quarter, where you can smell fresh fish grilling, and see locals dipping delicious local salty potatoes - papas arrugadas - into colourful sauces. An evening stroll along El Charco de san Gines is a must for watching fishing boats bobbing gently on the lagoon, and watching spectacular sunsets burning across the sky. Standing tall for more than four centuries, Castillo De San Gabriel is located on the tiny island of Islote de los Ingleses, and was once a target for pirates, who would appear menacingly on the Atlantic’s horison. The stalwart 16th-century fortress now serves as the History Museum of Arrecife, and exhibitions inside explore the evolution of the city, and the ancient culture of Lanzarote. The International Museum of Contemporary Art, meanwhile, displays modern and abstract works within the 18th-century San José Castle’s refined setting. See works from Cesar Manrique - the prominent artist and architect whose slick sixties style flair can be admired across the island.

Excursões em ARRECIFE (Canary Islands)

Discover Museo LagOmar, one of the most spectacular private properties in Lanzarote, during this memorable half-day excursion.

LagOmar Museum

After tendering ashore and a 200-meter walk, depart Arrecife port for an approximately 30-minute drive to Museo Lagomar. The Museum is one of the most spectacular private properties in Lanzarote, featuring natural labyrinths and caves formed from lava. This former home was the vision of Cesar Manrique, who dreamed of a residence inspired by Arabian nights' mythology. With the help of artist Jesús Soto and developer Sam Benady, he brought his vision to life, forming a private residence within a volcanic quarry.

In the early 1970s, actor Omar Sharif came to Lanzarote to film "The Mysterious Island." After discovering LagOmar, he fell in love with the property so much that he bought it from the original owner. Unfortunately for Omar, he bet the house over a game of bridge with San Benady, having no idea the man was a renowned bridge champion.

Refreshments, African Exhibition Gallery & Guided Tour

Upon arrival at the property, sip an included glass of Cava while nibbling on some canapés. Next, see the spectacular residence on a guided tour, including the African exhibition gallery and museum, which hosts itinerant exhibitions and sponsors emerging talents on the island. The existing caves were refurbished using wood and artifacts from local shipwrecks, for the beams and lights. Local flora was incorporated in the design: cactus, palm, aloes and bougainvillea, to form an oasis within the rock. They used glass, washed concrete and pebbles to generate circular patios, the lake, cascades and a series of curvaceous spaces avoiding all forms of square tiling whatsoever.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach for an approximately 30-minute drive back to the ship.

Lanzarote Photo Safari

On this photo safari tour, uncover hidden gems of Lanzarote that will inspire your creativity. You will see some of the most varied and dramatic landscapes of the island, such as crater lakes, volcanic mountains and sea caves. Whether you're a beginner or advanced photographer, everyone is welcome to participate in this tour.

Caletón Blanco

After tendering ashore and a 200-meter walk, depart the pier by private van for your first stop, Caletón Blanco. Located in the quaint fishing village of Órzola, this beach stands out for its pristine white sands, dotted with volcanic lava and a natural swimming pool filled with turquoise waters. After taking some photos and perhaps a lounge in the sun, re-board your van for your transfer to Mirador del Rio.

Mirador del Rio

Mirador del Rio is an iconic lookout point on a cliff, offering a bird's eye view of three small islets known as the Chinijo archipelago. La Graciosa, the largest of the islets, boasts otherworldly volcanic cones framed in shades of ochre and beige The building at the lookout point was designed by renowned architect, Cesar Manrique, who perfectly integrated the structure into its volcanic surrounds. After taking some magical photos of the site, re-board your van for your transfer to La Geria Winery.

La Geria Wine Tasting

Taste some wines from the region at La Geria Winery with peanuts provided to satisfy your appetite. You might be wondering how a dry, windy island such Lanzarote can produce excellent wines. You'll find the answer by looking at the "geria," a cone-shaped hole dug into layers of volcanic gravel several meters deep. A vine is then planted in the center, where it is protected from the elements. After capturing some memorable photos of the landscape, re-board your van for your transfer to Las Salinas.

Las Salinas

Next, visit Las Salinas, which is Spanish for "the salt flats." Salt used to be a vital commodity of the Canary Islands. Back in the 1940s, there were 26 salt production sites on the island of Lanzarote alone. While most of these are gone today, the Janubio salt flats have been preserved. You will find several spots around the salt flats to capture unique shots of this panoramic piece of history. After taking in the site, re-board your van for your transfer to Los Hervideros.

Los Hervideros

Next, come upon a series of jagged sea cliffs known as Los Hervideros. Underneath these cliffs are an abundance of caves produced by the erosion of lava. When the waves enter these caves, the appearance of a bubbling and boiling sea is ignited by the power of the ocean. Time will be made available to wander the pathways and photograph this special force of nature in action. Afterwards, re-board your coach and transfer to your final stop, Charco de los Ciclos.

Charco de los Ciclos

Lastly, you'll reach the west coast of Lanzarote, where you'll come across a lagoon inside of a volcano crater. The most striking aspect is the bright green color of the lagoon, pigmented by green algae at the bottom. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your van for a 1-hour transfer back to the ship.

Lanzarote by Twizy Electric Car

Drive an environmentally-friendly Twizy electric car through Lanzarote during this exhilarating half-day excursion.

Island Drive by Twizy

After tendering ashore and a 200-meter walk, board your coach for an approximately 20-minute drive to Puerto del Carmen. Upon arrival, meet your ride, an electric car known as a "Twizy." This two-seater vehicle originally debuted as a concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, designed by Francoise Leboinne and Luciano Bove. Several years later, Nissan adopted their own variation of the design before it was finally adopted by Renault, it's current manufacturer. In 2012, the Twizy was the top-selling electric car in Europe. Receive a short safely and operational briefing of the vehicle before setting off on your guided self-driving tour.

César Manrique Foundation, Campeseino Monument

Your first stop will be the César Manrique Foundation, located at artist Manrique's former home. Surrounded by an extraordinary palm grove, the residence turned museum is a stunning example of the island's classic architectural style. Formerly the ruins of a historic manor, Manrique restored the home while managing to preserve its original charm, harmonizing the property with the surrounding flora. Next, you'll pass by the Campesino Monument, a sculpture also constructed by Manrique, serving as a tribute to fertility. The sculpture is made from discarded water tanks of the Conejero farmers, a reminder of their perseverance to produce crops in the challenging volcanic terrain of the island. Time will be made available for photos before re-boarding your Twizy and driving to the next location.

Volcano Cuervo

Next, come upon Volcano Cuervo, which is credited with transforming the landscape of Lanzarote into the otherworldly, lunar appearance it has today. Located in a unique (some say apocalyptic) setting, stand at the foot of the volcano and take in the black sea of solidified lava that surrounds it. After the volcano erupted for its one and only time in 1730, it came to be a symbol of Lanzarote's transformation and resilience.

At the conclusion of your tour, a 15-minute rest top will be made at La Geria Winery. A café onsite is available for refreshments at your own expense. Afterwards, transfer to Puerto del Carmen to drop off your Twizy and re-board your coach for an approximately 45-minute transfer back to the pier.

Lanzarote through Manrique’s Eyes

Explore a trio of the most important landmarks on Lanzarote Island through the eyes of artist César Manrique during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Arrecife, Iconic Landmarks Created by César Manrique

Depart the pier for a scenic tour of three of the many top destinations inspired by César Manrique's pioneering vision of how man and the environment interact. To this day, his vision still influences how Canary people think about their islands, and especially, Lanzarote. This artist from Lanzarote knew how to transform the volcanic caves into places full of peace, silence, harmony and beauty. The blue, white, green and black colours get mixed up, and give these places their amazing pulchritude.

Guided Visits to the Mirador Del Río Viewpoint, Cueva de Los Verdes and Jameos del Agua

An approximately 40-minute drive north brings you to your first stop, Mirador del Río, an incredibly panoramic viewpoint created by Manrique on an approximately 1,560-foot-high (about 475-metre-high) escarpment called Batería del Río. Following your visit, re-board your coach and proceed for guided tours inside the stunning Cueva de Los Verdes and Jameos del Agua. Both are part of an approximately 3.7-mile-long (about six-kilometre-long) lava tube formed about 4,000 years ago when La Corona Mountain erupted. Molten lava continued to flow as the surface hardened, which, in turn, led to the formation of the tubes, which run down under the Atlantic Ocean.

Large Caverns, Illuminated Cave Walls, Volcanic and Architectonic Elements, Free Time

The word 'jameos' refers to the large openings in the tube that formed when parts of the roof collapsed due to a pressure build-up caused by the volcanic gases. One such cavern, Jameos del Agua, forms the entrance to the Cueva de Los Verdes, whose cave walls are illuminated by colourful lights. It is these open-air caves that Manrique used as the centrepiece for the attraction; places where the buildings engage in a constant dialog with the natural surroundings, making the volcanic and architectonic elements blend in tandem. Following your tour, some free time is made available to explore your surrounds at your leisure. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

National Park of Timanfaya & Exclusive Visit to Salinas del Janubio

Experience the lunar-like beauty of Timanfaya National Park, and a private tour and tasting at a salt pan during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Arrecife, Timanfaya National Park, Guided Walking Tour, Lunar-Like Volcano Route

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Timanfaya National Park, famous for its volcanos and similarity in appearance to Mars and the Moon. If it were not for the intense blue of the sky, many photos taken in Lanzarote could be mistaken for its lunar-like landscapes. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of Timanfaya National Park and a route leading towards the volcanoes. Along the way, learn about your surrounds and marvel at the spectacular panoramic views of the unusual landscape.

Salinas del Janubio, Private Tour and Tasting

Next, re-board your coach and continue on for a private tour of the Salinas del Janubio. Here, see locals working on the salt pans, and the Bodega where they keep the salt. Afterward, proceed for a tasting of their salt flower, a form of pure salt collected according to very traditional techniques of marine origin. This salt is collected manually, and does not go through any industrial process. It is stored in containers for a year, allowing the sun and wind to dry it into a pure product, produced without additives or transformation, and with very limited production.

Los Hervideros, Waves Crashing into the Caves

Salinas del Janubio was once cropland terrain, but, in 1895, the locals turned them into salt pans as a way to better-preserve their food and achieve a salt source within the island. The rich colours and architectonic shapes, combined with the black sand from Janubio Beach, give it a singular, striking image. Leaving the salt pans, re-board your coach and head for a visit to Los Hervideros, an amazing natural phenomenon in which waves force water into the labyrinth of caves with such dramatic power, it appears as if the sea is bubbling and boiling. Following this once-in-a-lifetime experience, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
