Silversea Luxury Cruises A AQABA (Petra)

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Aqabq, Jordan

Improbably carved into the rusty-red rock of the Jordanian desert, the ancient city of Petra has been mesmerising visitors since being rediscovered by Westerners in 1812. Siq Canyon provides a suitably grandiose welcome, cutting a deep track through layers of fiery sandstone, and building up the suspense, before you first set eyes on the Lost City’s majesty. An early start is best to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site, giving you chance to beat the crowds and avoid the brunt of the heat. View more

The Treasury is perhaps Petra’s best-known structure, having featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as the mystical hiding place of the Holy Grail. Imprinted deep into the sheer sandstone, it’s a dramatic, spectacular achievement of human endeavour. Look closely, and you’ll see the indentations of bullet holes scarring the urn that sits atop it – fired by Bedouins fuelled by rumours of ancient treasure within. Petra developed as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, and the sophistication of the Rose Kingdom’s rock-hewn buildings is matched only by the elaborate and advanced water collection and transportation system that quenched its thirst and provided the means to thrive, despite its remote location and the intense burn of the sun. Look out for the delicate water channels that lace the city as you explore. High above the city - up a daunting 800-step climb - stands the Monastery. It’s lesser known, but larger and - whisper it quietly - perhaps even more impressive than the Treasury. The High Place of Sacrifice is an even tougher hike - with only occasional electric-blue lizards scattering from your footsteps as you rise - but the views of the remarkable city, embossed into the mighty sandstone cliffs below, will last a lifetime.

Morning Wadi Rum Safari

Start your morning adventurously with a drive in the Wadi Rum desert, which makes for an exciting and memorable half-day excursion.

Departing the port by coach, an approximate one-hour drive on the Desert Highway takes you to Wadi Rum Visitors Centre. Here, switch to simple 4x4 vehicles driven by local Bedouin drivers for the trip into the Wadi Rum desert.

Wadi Rum

As you enter the Wadi Rum region, its captivating and mystical beauty will astound you. Black, wind-sculpted hills stand like sentinels upon pale sands, interspersed by dramatic rock formations. Drive past the Wadi Rum Rest House and a small Bedouin community with its prized possession - camels. Farther into the desert, you may be able to spot a few of the traditional black tents dotting the arid landscape.

This trip into the desert provides awesome and ever-changing vistas of multi-coloured granite and limestone cliffs rising amid the vast expanse of sand. Parts of Wadi Rum resemble a lunar landscape, aptly called the 'Valley of the Moon'. Here, the legend of Lawrence of Arabia was born. A rock formation known as The Seven Pillars of Wisdom was immortalized in the book and film about the legendary figure.

This Wadi Rum adventure concludes back at a Bedouin tent in the desert. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea before heading back to Aqaba and the ship by coach.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of activity and it is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. The desert drive is mostly over rugged and bumpy terrain and is not suitable for those with neck or back problems. We recommend light comfortable clothing, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat or scarf. Shorts, skirts or revealing clothing are not recommended. This tour operates in air-conditioned coaches and four-wheel drive vehicles owned and operated by the local Bedouin people. Price is based on four guests per vehicle. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and closed shoes. Don't forget to bring your camera.

Petra - Jordan's Treasure

Enjoy the opportunity to visit Jordan's most famous attraction, the spectacular rose-red City of Petra during this full-day tour. Lunch and entrance fees are included.

Petra

Depart the port in comfortable coaches and travel north along the Desert Highway. The last stretch is on country road through several small villages. Upon arrival at Petra, begin your visit on foot. The long, narrow gorge with steeply rising sides all but obliterates the sun. For those who wish, the entrance to the siq may be reached on horseback - at your own risk. (There is no charge for this service but the horseman will expect a gratuity.)

Khazneh (Treasury)

As you exit the gorge, it suddenly opens into a natural square dominated by Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury. Its intricately carved façade presents a magnificent sight in the dazzling sun. If you have seen the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you will no doubt recognize the façade. Follow the guide farther into the site and discover other impressive structures carved out of the rose-coloured stone. They include temples, royal tombs and an amphitheatre that could seat 3,000 spectators. The Petra basin boasts over 800 individual monuments; to explore it all would take several days.

Your visit of approximately three hours concludes with the walk back via the same way. Optionally, a horse-drawn buggy or carriage can be hired to take you through the narrow pathway of the Petra Valley. It is the only transportation permitted. Buggies/carriages are limited and cannot be reserved in advance. However, local staff will provide assistance. The charge is $40 USD per two-person (at the time if printing) carriage to be paid on the spot. Be aware that you may have to wait in line. Each buggy carries two persons; the ride can be quite bumpy.

Afterwards, re-join the coach for the 2.5-hour drive back to Aqaba. Lunch and entrance fees are included.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking through the half-mile-long (800 metres) defile and within Petra; in total over 3 hours, much of it on uneven ground. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilize a wheelchair. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Be aware that the weather is often unpredictable - it may be cool and windy among the rocks, but hot in open areas. Don't forget to bring a sweater or jacket for cool weather after sunset and remember your camera. We suggest you carry a bottle of water with you. The duration of the drive between the pier and Petra is approximately 1.5-2.5 hours in each direction. Restrooms are of local standard and may fall below Silversea expectations. This tour offers a unique Jordanian experience; a sense of adventure is required.

During your outing, the chef prepares a tasty barbecue lunch to enjoy while you relax on the covered deck and take in the panoramic views of the city of Aqaba. Cruise to the boat's docking location.

World Cruise Collection: Petra Discovery with an Archaeologist

Explore the most famous attraction in Jordan during this unforgettable, full-day World Cruise Collection excursion to the spectacular city of Petra.

Ancient City of Petra via the Siq

Newly-designed especially for our valued World Cruise guests, your World Cruise Collection tour begins with a scenic, approximately two-hour drive north to Petra via the Desert Highway, and on country roads through several small villages. Upon arrival at Petra, one of the 'New Seven Wonders of the World', your walking tour with an archaeologist/guide begins with an approximately half-mile (about 0.8-kilometre) walk through the Siq, a long, narrow gorge with steeply-rising sides that all but obliterates the sun. Alternately, an optional, horse-drawn buggy can be hired to take you through the narrow pathway to the entrance; it is the only transportation permitted.

About Petra

The ancient city of Petra spans approximately 38.6 square miles (about 100 square kilometres), and was built between 800 B.C.-100 A.D. by Nabatean Arabs. Petra was a fortress, carved out of the jagged rocks in an area that was virtually inaccessible. From caves in a rocky outcrop, they created their fortress city. The Siq served as a defence, and part of an incredible water system for the city of Petra. In the 1st and 2nd centuries, after the Romans invaded, the city reached the peak of its fame. When shipping slowly displaced caravan routes, the city's importance gradually dwindled, it fell into disuse and was lost to the world until 1812, when it was re-discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhart. Today, Petra is a popular tourist attraction, known as the 'rose-red city half as old as time'. The Petra basin boasts over 800 individual monuments; to explore it all would take several days.

Khazneh (Treasury), Intricately-Carved Façade, Temples, Royal Tombs, Amphitheatre, Lunch

As you exit the gorge, it suddenly opens into a natural square dominated by Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury. Its intricately-carved façade was featured in the movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and presents a magnificent sight in the dazzling sun. From here, follow your guide further into the site and discover other impressive structures carved out of the rose-coloured stone. Included are temples, royal tombs and an amphitheatre that seats 3,000 spectators. A stop is made for lunch at one of the Nabatean caves inside the site. After lunch, begin the walk back via the same route. Following your tour and a comfort stop, your World Cruise Collection tour concludes with an approximately two-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This World Cruise Collection tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 3.1 miles-3.7 miles (about five kilometres-six kilometres), at times over uneven, gravel and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, and ancient stairs at the sites visited. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guest with back and/or neck problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with claustrophobia, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a sweater or light jacket, camera, bottled water, and local currency for purchases from the ship; avoid wearing sandals, as most of the sites visited are dusty.. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. The driving distance between the pier and Petra is approximately two hours in each direction. Guests must ask for permission before taking photographs of local Bedouins. Guests are not permitted to bring food into Petra. Guests must carry their ship's ID at all times. A horse-drawn buggy can be hired to take you through the narrow pathway to the entrance; it is the only transportation permitted. Buggies are limited, and cannot be reserved in advance. However, local staff will provide assistance. The charge is US$35 per carriage, each carriage can take 2 persons medium weight. Carriage cost to be paid on the spot and a tip of USD 15 is expected at the end of the ride. Guests who opt to take the buggy-ride do so at their own risk. Please be aware that you may have to wait in line. Each buggy carries two people, and the ride can be quite bumpy. The tour sequence may vary.
