Silversea Luxury Cruises A ALGHERO (Sardinia)

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Alghero, Italy

Encircled by dramatic medieval walls, which rise abruptly from deep-blue waters, Alghero’s defences shelter one of Sardinia’s largest and most spectacular old towns. Uneven cobbled streets, rich history and a fiery Catalan flare provide a real depth of character, and the Coral Riviera’s pristine beaches, which stretch out nearby, help to make Alghero a real highlight of Sardinia. Alghero has changed hands numerous times over its tempestuous history, but it’s the Catalan influence that you’ll feel most acutely, as you explore. View more

It was the Catalans who upgraded the defensive ramparts of the ‘Sardinian Barcelonetta’ into the spectacular, imposing fortress we see today, enclosing the old town’s evocative knot of narrow streets and rose-gold-coloured masonry. Wander the streets at your leisure, enjoying the cooling shade of the tight, cobblestone streets with lemon-gelato in hand, or enjoying fresh tuna steak at the bustling La Boqueria market. Alghero Cathedral is hidden amid the labyrinth of narrow streets, but it’s the distinctive Baroque-dome of Chiesa di San Michele that you’ll immediately notice peeking ostentatiously over the terracotta roofs of the old town, flaunting its rainbow-coloured patterning. Plush restaurants revel in Alghero’s historical collision of cultures and produce delicious fare like plump clams tangled in tagliatelle, and succulent porcetto pork – slowly roasted to perfection in smoky wood ovens. Wash it down with mirto, a crushed berry liqueur, or sample the fruits of local vineyards, with a platter of Sardinia’s renowned pecorino sheep’s cheese. The city dominates Sardinia’s Coral Riviera – so named because of the red coral found here that’s been used for jewellery since Roman times. Lie back and listen to the waves washing ashore at Spiaggia di Maria Pia beach, breathing in the smell of pine-needles on the breeze.

Alghero & Nuraghe Palmavera

Experience the splendid beauty of Sardinia during a scenic and memorable visit to the Nuraghe Palmavera archaeological site, the Capo Caccia Belvedere and Alghero's Old Town.

After tendering ashore, board your coach for the scenic drive along the coastal road to Nuraghe Palmavera which is located approximately 6 miles (about 10 kilometres) from town.

Nuraghe Palmavera

From the bus parking area, proceed on foot to the archaeological site. During a walking tour of the premises, your guide explains the history and significance of these remarkable remains dating from the civilization that existed here about 1300-1200 B.C. The main tower is an excellent example of Sardinia's earliest inhabitants, who remain a prehistoric enigma. Ancient writers called them the 'Nuraghic' people, named after their stone dwellings, the 'Nuraghi'. These structures are unique to Sardinia, just as the Aztec pyramids are to Mexico.

Capo Caccia Belvedere

Next your drive continues on to Capo Caccia Belvedere, where a photo stop is made for spectacular panoramic views of the Coral Riviera, or 'Riviera del Corallo'. After the photo stop, re-board the coach for the approximately one-hour drive back to Alghero. Upon arrival, take a walking tour of the Catalan-styled Old Town.

Alghero's Old Town

The best way to see this appealing walled town with its distinctly Spanish-Catalan flavour is on-foot. During your brief walking tour your guide points out Alghero's most notable attractions. Along the way, a visit is made to the Cathedral of Santa Maria, centrally located in the Spanish Quarter.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to browse the local shops at your leisure before walking the short distance back to the pier.

Alghero & Wine Tasting

After tendering ashore, depart the pier for an orientation drive through Alghero, then continue on to Piazza Sulis and start your walking tour of Alghero's Old Town.

Alghero's Old Town

The best way to see this appealing walled town with its distinctly Spanish flavour is on-foot. During the brief walking tour your guide points out Alghero's most notable attractions. Along the way, a visit is made to the Cathedral of Santa Maria.

The maze-like narrow lanes and piazzas of Alghero old town protrude out into the Mediterranean from the regular grid of streets that now constitute the modern town. This geographical aspect and the strategic position of Alghero on the North West coast of Sardinia led to the construction of massive sea facing city walls to guard against maritime threats from this direction.

Alghero marina is situated just outside the walls and immediately beyond is the town beach of Alghero also known as the Lido. This long expanse of white sand stretches for 3 miles (4.8 km) to the town of Fertilia and is backed by numerous hotels and apartments.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to browse the local shops at your leisure before re-boarding the coach to reach the venue Azienda Agrituristica Ledà d'Ittiri for the wine tasting.

Azienda Agrituristica Leda' d'Ittiri

The estate is located just a short distance away from the frenetic town of Alghero and from wonderful white-sand beaches, at the feet of Monte Doglia, a mountain from whose peak it is possible to admire the bay of Porto Conte and the promontory of Capo Caccia. The estate consists of 18 hectares (44.5 acres) of olive orchards and vineyards that are carefully cultivated by the owners as if they were the garden of their farmhouse.

Antonella and Annamaria are two ladies with an ambitious business project. Together as mother and daughter, they belong to an ancient Sardinian noble household, the only heraldic coat of arms within the Sardinian wine sector. They have become passionate, expert entrepreneurs who are able not only to look after each detail of their business, but also to personally keep up with the issues of the cultivation. The result has come up to their expectations.

Given the favorable location of the estate, the owners have integrated the agricultural activities with a tourist/cultural project, aimed at promoting the area and its products. The business philosophy consists in producing small quantities in favor of a higher quality and in offering a high-level hospitality to those visitors who appreciate the tranquility and the fragrance of the countryside.

Following your wine tasting, re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier in Alghero.

Kayaking Experience & Tasting

Replenish your spirit on this excursion that offers a unique opportunity to kayak along the scenic Coghnias River. Birders and nature-lovers are sure to enjoy this excursion along a natural waterway that provides an oasis for many species of plants and wildlife.

After 90-minute drive to Valledoria, stretch your legs and then become one with nature on this peaceful two-hour kayak trip. The meandering Coghinas River is abundant with vegetation and tranquil countryside sounds, creating a sense of internal tranquility while also stimulating the senses. Setting off at the Bridge of Baduboi, the route takes you along the gentle lower portion of the river.

The Coghinas River is the third-longest river of the island and is one the most important waterways in northern Sardinia. The river is part of a Nature Reserve that protects almost 700 acres of ecosystems, which support migratory bird populations, majestic herons, kingfishers, ducks and other sea birds.

Surrounded by Mediterranean shrubs and juniper trees, while you paddle downstream to reach the lagoon, soak up the serenity of nature. The route is easy and suitable for every level but guests need to be able to paddle and follow the group. This is a fun way to get up close to fauna and flora of Sardinia.

Relinquish your kayak and drive 30 minutes to a local country estate, where you have the chance to enjoy a tasting of products made with local ingredients.

Make the 90-minute return drive to the ship.

Medieval Castelsardo

The exquisite beauty of the Sardinian Countryside is yours to discover during this scenic visit to the medieval town of Castelsardo.

After tendering ashore, depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive north through the Sardinian countryside to Castelsardo.

Elephant's Rock

En route, a photo stop is made at Elephant's Rock. This strange stone, sculpted by the ever-present winds, resembles an elephant's head and trunk. Presumably, the site was used in ancient times for burial ceremonies. Next, re-board your coach for the drive to Castelsardo.

Castelsardo

This fortified town, founded in the 12th century by the Marine Republic of Genoa, is situated on a promontory overlooking vast panoramas of the Gulf of Asinara to the west and views of the Gallura peaks to the east. The historical centre of this village is built on a tall crag that slopes into the sea, is shaped like an upside-down cone and offers wonderful panoramic views.

The village was founded by the Doria family in the 12th century, and was originally called Castelgenovese. When the Spanish arrived in 1448, it became known as Castel Aragonese. The town's present name was derived in 1769 under the reign of Carlo Emanuele. Today, Castelsardo is a popular tourist destination. Its handicrafts, especially the baskets made from wild palms, are quite famous.

Following your guided walking tour of Castelsardo, some free time is made available for you to browse the shops at your leisure before re-boarding your coach for the approximately 1 hour return drive to the pier.

Riviera del Corallo by Catamaran

Sit back and soak up the sun on this three-hour catamaran cruise along the unique coast of the Porto Conte Nature Reserve. Established in 1999, this protected area covers more than 5,000 acres and provides a safe environment for precious marine, coastal, and lagoon ecosystems. It also provides a base for important research with other European countries, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

Drive 30 minutes to your starting point at the beautiful blue waters of Baia di Conte. After a safety briefing set sail and proceed south along the dramatically beautiful eastern coast of the Capo Caccia peninsula. As countless mariners throughout history have turned their gazes upward in awe, join them in admiring the breathtaking cliffs which plunge into the sea from more than 300 yards above.

Rest in the Baia di Cala Dragunara to enjoy a dip in this scenic bay's translucent waters, taking time to appreciate the impressive scenery. Enjoy a local aperitif while sailing back to shore.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking and standing to board the catamaran and move about underway. There is a brief walk (350 yards) through hotel grounds and across a sandy beach. Due to the steps and unpaved ground, this tour is not suitable for guests who utilize walkers or a wheelchair. Minimum age to participate is 5 years old. Guests with a fear of water should not participate on this tour. Guests are recommended to wear swimsuit, comfortable clothes and shoes. Guests should expect significant sun exposure, bring towels and binoculars. Space on this tour is limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed.

Afterward, depart the pier for your picturesque, approximately 18.6-mile (about 30-kilometre) e-bike tour. Led by your guide, ride along an approximately 3.1-mile (about five-mile) cycling path along the coastal road connecting Fertilla to Alghero, part of the Riviera del Corallo.

Porto Conte Regional Park District, Pinewoods, Flora & Fauna, Punta Giglio, Seaside Coves

Located in extreme north-western Sardinia, the Riviera del Corallo is an immense expanse of pristine landscapes with breath-taking views of the sea, a unique variety of plant and animal species, and a rare concentration of archaeological evidence of great interest. Next, a refreshment stop is made near Lazzaretto Beach for a coffee or beverage. Afterward, explore the most exquisite small beaches in the area, including hidden spots where, weather-permitting, some free time is made available for a refreshing swim. Sardinia in depth: Culture & Flavours

Go deep into Sardinian culture and discover its history and natural beauty on this memorable full-day tour of Italy's second-largest island.

Town of Bosa

Take a scenic coastal drive to the colorful town of Bosa, with its brilliant multi-colored homes creating a vibrantly welcoming scene. Enjoy a guided tour of this charming place followed by some free time to explore before boarding the coach and heading to your next destination (50-minute scenic drive).

Nuraghe Valley

Nestled in the heart of Sardinia is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites of all of Italy's islands, the ruins of the Nuragic civilization (1900 to 730 BCE). Made of stacked stones and resembling primitive fortresses, these megalithic structures (called nuraghes) number over 7,000 on the island of Sardinia and are incredible to behold in person. See for yourself the Nuraghe of Sant'Antine, one of the best-preserved (and tallest) sites on the island permitting visitors.

Make the one-hour return trip to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking (slightly more than a mile) over uneven surfaces, with stairs, and periods of standing. Due to the historic city landscape and archeological conditions, this trip is not suitable for guests who utilize walkers or a wheelchair. Minimum age to participate is 3 years old. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Guests should expect significant sun exposure. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated with 48 hours advanced notice. Space on this tour is somewhat limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Sardinian Sailing Experience

Enjoy a full day of total relaxation and cruise in style along the Coral Coast on an authentic sailing boat, a 1939 gaff-rig top's'l ketch. Used as a traditional fishing vessel for her first fifty years in the northern waters of Denmark and the North Sea, it is now loving her working retirement in the incredibly clear waters of the Coral Coast.

Your vessel for the day was lovingly restored and has been maintained by her English owners, who have provided such memorable experiences that people have continued to return for the last sixteen years the ship has been sailing out of Sardinia.

With a maximum of 12 people on board there is plenty of deck space for everyone to soak up the sun. While there are no guaranteed wildlife sightings, the sailing boat does have a knack for calling the dolphins and it is not uncommon to see them riding her bow wake. Take some time for swimming and experience hoisting sails the traditional way, if the weather is appropriate.

This tour lasts 6 hours aboard and includes time for swimming, relaxation and lunch aboard. Walk from the dock back to your ship at the conclusion of this delightful adventure.
