Silversea Expedition Cruises A ACAPULCO (Guerrero)

ACAPULCO (Guerrero)

Whether going loco down in Acapulco fills you with dread or delight is up to you. The Mexican city is as famed for its spring breaker as for its splendid beauty. The lively promenade gives travellers a sense of modern Mexico; a creative food scene, excellent shopping and the world’s longest over the water zipline. Venture a little further from the waterfront for a taste of colonial architecture, artwork by Diego Rivera and a chance to snorkel in crystalline waters far from the madding crowd. View more

The city is located on a deep seawater port, around 380 km south of Mexico City. Its history dates back to the 8th century, although it was not until the pre-Hispanic era – around 1520 – that the village began to expand. The Aztecs had ruled the city for a brief period, although lack of military organisation proved no match for the Spanish. Acapulco quickly became the second most important port of Mexico, welcoming ships from Europe on their return from Asia. The port was soon being targeted by buccaneers, thus the San Diego Fort was built in 1616 in an effort to stave off pirate attacks. The original fort was destroyed by an earthquake in 1776 and was rebuilt between 1778 and 1783 – this is the version that is still standing intact today. No one could visit Acapulco without witnessing the dramatic performances of the world-famous cliff divers. Standing poised at the edge of a 35 metre cliff, the divers soar into the crashing surf below. It is true entertainment, both nerve-wracking and impressive at once.

Following your guided tour, re-board your coach and head towards Caleta.

Caleta

Former Hollywood stars such as Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, and John Wayne used to own houses and spend their holidays here. Although its heyday has passed, you can still see the hotels and houses of yesteryear. Afterward, proceed for a refreshment stop at the Los Flamingos Hotel. Your last stop is the B & B Shop at Papagayo Park, where some free time is made available for shopping. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Caleta and Los Flamingos Hotel

Next, re-board you coach and drive to the Caleta area, where stars such as Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, and John Wayne used to own houses and spend their holidays. A stop is made at the Los Flamingos Hotel, an old-time favourite, to learn about their favourite drinks and how to prepare them.

Mexican Cooking Lesson and Papagayo Park Shopping

Your tour continues with a cooking demonstration at the 100% Natural restaurant. Discover the secrets of cooking traditional Mexican cuisine, and learn how to prepare popular local snacks. Following your cooking demonstration, enjoy the snacks with a refreshing drink. Your tour concludes with a shopping stop at Papagayo Park before commencing the short drive back to the pier.

Sights of Acapulco & Cliff Divers

This half day Acapulco tour has been popular for years with first time visitors. It provides a look at Acapulco that includes spectacular scenery, old and new parts of this much-touted holiday destination and one of its most talked about attractions, the Quebrada cliff divers. Departing from the port, head toward Caleta, Acapulco's first residential area which launched this destination to resort stardom. From here, continue down the winding road to the site of La Quebrada.

Cliff Diver Show

Watch in awe the dramatic performance of the world-famous cliff divers. Standing poised at the edge of a jagged promontory, the divers soar from the 115-foot (35-metre) cliff into the crashing surf below. Since the 1930s, the show has become an enduring symbol of the city. Please note that it is not uncommon for the divers to approach the crowd directly and persistently ask for a tip.

Sightseeing Drive

Proceed with a drive toward downtown and along the main thoroughfare, La Costera Miguel Aleman. The several-mile-long seafront avenue skirting the bay is lined with deluxe hotels, restaurants and shopping complexes. At the end of La Costera, the road winds its way up a steep hillside, offering fantastic views over the city, the bay and the mountain range that provides an impressive backdrop. The guide points out some of the posh villas built by the rich and famous in the prestigious residential area of Las Brisas.

Las Brisas

You will pass the Las Brisas district and enjoy truly breathtaking views of the bay, beaches and high-rise resorts of Acapulco. On your way, admire the vistas offering an expanse of ocean, beach and lush greenery. Heading back to the port, you may opt to be dropped off for shopping, after which make your own way back to the ship. If you prefer, transfer directly to the ship.
