Silversea Expedition Cruises To SEVEN SPIRIT BAY

SEVEN SPIRIT BAY

Seven Spirit Bay is at the entrance to the 32 kilometers long Port Essington and is one of Cobourg Peninsula’s several bays facing the Arafura Sea. North of Van Diemen Gulf and southeast of where the Timor Sea and Arafura Sea meet, the entire peninsula lies within Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. The park shows a wide variety of landscapes: sandy beaches and dunes, mangroves, forested wetlands and swamps, grasslands and sea grass meadows. View more

Although dugong, manta rays and dolphins form part of the park’s rich marine life, unfortunately neither swimming nor snorkeling is allowed as estuarine crocodiles and sharks are also quite prominent. More than 200 species of birds use the forests and marshes and the Cobourg Peninsula became the world’s first RAMSAR listed wetland in 1974. Trepang Bay to the west of Seven Spirit Bay clearly relates to the sea cucumber (beche-de-mer) trade by the Macassans and the Aboriginals. The historical importance of the area goes back to the early 19th century with a survey by Phillip Parker King, who named the Cobourg Peninsula and Port Essington in 1818, and the claiming of the Australian north coast at Port Essington’s Record Point in 1824. In 1838 it was decided to set up Victoria Settlement on Port Essington’s western shore opposite Record Point. The ruins of some of the buildings abandoned in 1849 can still be seen. Today a luxury wilderness lodge exists at Seven Spirit Bay.
