Silversea Luxury Cruises To PORTO MAHON

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Porto Mahon

Happy to sit out of the limelight that Ibiza and Majorca bathe in, Menorca lives life at its own pace, offering endless pine-tree fringed beaches and an appealing, mellow approach. The capital of Menorca is a bashful member of Balearic Islands, which wait off of the sunny Spanish coast. With atmospheric old towns, tiny fishing villages, and unspoiled beach coves, this is one of the group’s lesser-known and explored gems – and all the richer for it. View more

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, there are wetlands and rolling sand dunes with diverse wildlife to explore - and 220 different birds soar and wade within. The designation helped to halt the threat of overdevelopment, and with gloriously clear waters and leisurely boating trips to enjoy, Porto Mahon welcomes you to a wonderfully preserved and characterful island. The island’s capital spills around the Med’s largest natural harbour, which sprawls out for three miles. Wander the whitewash town’s streets, heading for the hubbub of the fish market – to sample the best of the day’s freshly prepared haul. The majestic organ that fills the interior of Santa Maria church with over 3,000 pipes is a sight to see and can produce a wonderful, gut-vibrating noise. Filled with pottery and cake shops, there’s an artsy, laid back and creative atmosphere to Porto Mahon’s streets. Swing a golf club, and crack drives through the salty sea air of Porto Mahon, or rumble along the paved bike paths that ring the island exploring between wildflower sprinkled fields and stone walls. Or, head straight for the many beaches and turquoise seas, which are blotched with dark blue patches. When it’s time for a sit down in the shade, order up a refreshing pomada - gin and lemonade – before settling on your sandy nook of choice, to watch the setting sun sinking into the warm of the waves of the Mediterranean.

Ancient Sites Visit with an Archaeologist

This half day tour offers the opportunity to be guided by Simon Gornes, Doctor in Prehistorical Archaeology, through several archaeological sites of the Talayotic culture of Menorca, candidate to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2021.

In addition, Menorca has already been declared a Biosphere Reserve back in 1993 by UNESCO. The chosen archaeological sites are set in very well preserved rural and natural environments, currently managed as farms. The first visit will be in the prehistoric village of Cornia Nou, located near Mahón city.

Different talayots -like towers- and temples were built on a little hill. You will have the opportunity to see several monuments ranging from the Bronze Age to the Romanization of the island. You will make a stop in a local cafeteria to have a snack.

Then, visit the site of Rafal Rubí (Alaior), an emblematic bronze age funerary monument, unique of the island of Menorca. You will see the funerary chambers and the funerary rites will be explained by Simon Gornes. Visit the taula temple enclosure of Trepucó (Mahón). Here you can see the talayot, like a big tower built with large cyclopean stones, and behind it, you will admire a large taula and a beautiful sanctuary surrounded by a 18th century defensive wall, made by the Spanish army when Saint Philips Castle was besieged by the Spanish troops in the year 1782, when the island was under British goverment.

The prehistoric wall that is surrounding the village was remodeled and improved, following canons of the influence Carthaginian fortification. Also, a magnificent talayot -a big prehistoric tower- can be seen at this site which stands out as having one of the most spectacular taula sanctuary enclosures.

Kayak Menorca

The island of Menorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, is a true paradise for sea kayaking. Menorca is the northernmost of the Balearic Islands where the landscape is like a mosaic due to its unusual geology. Little coves are interspersed with sandy beaches; colourful rocky coastal areas alternate with high cliffs, typical fishing villages and quaint little ports. It is the perfect natural setting to discover by kayak.

Kayak Adventure

Many of the untouched virgin beaches can only be reached from the sea, and so kayaking is often the way to find that empty white stretch of sand even in the height of the summer season. Unlike motor boats, kayaks can get really close up to the coast line, get to unusual and interesting places including exploring sea caves all whilst the only noise is that of the sea birds and lapping water.

Your Kayak journey begins at the bay of Fornells or the village of Es Grau in the S'Albufera Nature Park, depending on the wind direction and sea conditions. If the conditions on the north coast are not suitable then the kayaks will be moved to the south coast where it will be more sheltered and the seas will be calmer.

Upon arrival, receive your safety briefing, paddle and tour instructions before commencing your 2.5-hour guided kayaking adventure. With warm seas, pristine beaches and plenty of sheltered coves, the island is a perfect place to experience the unspoiled coastline full of marine and bird life as you paddle in crystal clear waters.

Once out of the water, re-board your coach for the return trip to the pier.

North, South & Mahon

Discover the coastal beauty of Menorca during this scenic excursion to the Village of Fornells, Son Bou Beach, and a visit to Mahon. This traditional town of fishermen has become a major reference thanks to its outstanding fish restaurants and an unparalleled variety of nautical sports that can be practiced in the shelter of its bay. In their white-washed houses, the inhabitants of Fornells have always kept a calm life of respect with nature.

Depart the pier for the approximately 20-minute drive through the fertile north countryside to the fishing village of Fornells.

Fornells

Your first stop is to the picturesque fishing village of Fornells, set on a magnificent bay of the same name. An important harbour in days gone past for ships to take shelter from the strong north winds, today this village is now a pleasure ground for watersports which include windsurfing, kayaking and sailing. Fornells is also very well known locally for its fish restaurants and the King of Spain is amongst the many famous people that come here to eat the Menorcan Caldereta, a dish based on local lobster.

Son Bou Beach

Your tour continues to the largest sandy beach on the island, Son Bou Beach backs onto the open countryside and is relatively undisturbed in terms of modern development. However, there are still some hotels, holiday complexes, a few shops, bars, restaurants, and a discotheque nearby. Upon arrival, a brief photo stop is made at this scenic locale.

Mahon

The tour returns to Mahon where you will leave the coach at the main square and walk downhill back to the harbour through the centre of town. The walk through this attractive town gives one a glimpse of the different phases in the islands turbulent history, the many architectural styles reflecting the frequent changes of rule. The centre offers an interesting mix of narrow streets lines with whitewashed houses, wide open squares and grand historical buildings.
