A spectacular and spacious sandy expanse – located at the point where the Arade River unloads into the Atlantic – relax, or wander the wooden boardwalk to a string of neighbouring beaches, as you explore among dramatic, tank-like rock formations. Taste juicy hauls of sardines, cooked over open fires, with glasses of wine pressed from the vineyards nearby - as you lavish under the sunshine of the Algarve’s prime holiday region. Surrounded by offbeat fishing villages, stunning coastline and quaintly tiled old towns, there is a rich medley of life, culture and flavours to indulge in. Attractive mosaics pattern the scenic Ribeirinha promenade, breathing new life into Portimão’s rugged old docks, and creating a charming riverside stroll that leads to the showpiece beach. Elsewhere, the arches and sea-eroded limestone stacks of the monumental Ponta da Piedade coastline are close by, or you can make for Silves, a historical former capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve, crowned with a soaring sandy castle. The Moorish trading outpost of Lagos is also within reach, where you can visit a coastline dotted with gaping sea caves, set below crumbling coastal fortresses.

Excursions in PORTIMÃO

Lagos & Sagres

Explore the picturesque, most westerly region of Portugal along the coast of the Algarve and visit the towns of Sagres and Lagos.

Depart the pier for the approximately 45-minute drive west to Cape St. Vincent and explore the historical places related to and significant of many Portuguese discoveries.

Cape St. Vincent

Named after the martyred St. Vincent, the cape is the site of numerous naval battles, including those between Admiral Rodney and the Spanish in 1780, and Admiral Jervis and Admiral Nelson against the Spanish fleet in 1797. As you stand on Europe's westernmost point, admire a steadfast lighthouse whose guiding beam safely directs hundreds of ships past the cape every year. What happened here six centuries ago led to the discovery of the world as we know it today. Before then only the bravest of Mediterranean sailors dared to venture beyond the "Pillars of Hercules" (Strait of Gibraltar), and none was foolhardy enough to sail past the rugged cliffs which marked the end of the known world. All that changed in the 1400s: the world was opened up to discovery, exploration and settlement; and Portugal and other countries went on to acquire overseas empires and great wealth. All this was due mainly to the foresight and determination of one man, Portugal's scholarly Prince Henry.

Sagres

Some consider Sagres to have been the headquarters of Prince Henry the Navigator's School of Navigation. The school may have been within the 17th-century fortress that was defended from the shore by mighty ramparts, and from the sea by towering cliffs. Prince Henry is also reputed to have created a shipbuilding yard in the small natural harbour below.

Lagos

Under the Moors, Lagos became an important trading post. After the Christians re-conquered Lagos in 1241, the town was a favoured residence of Henry the Navigator. The town faces an easterly direction and is set around a sheltered harbour with the Ponta da Piedade headland providing shelter to the largest beach on the western side of the Algarve, Meia Praia. The exposed cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade are regarded as the best natural feature of southern Portugal with grottos, arches and sea caves.

Following your guided walking tour, some free time is made available for you to browse its quaint, narrow streets at your leisure.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach for the approximately 30-minute return drive back to the pier in Portimão.

Quinta dos Vales Estate & Alvor

Discover the Old World village of Alvor and the award-winning wines of the Quinta dos Vales estate during this delightful, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Alvor

Depart the pier for the short drive past Praia da Rocha and on to Alvor, a delightful little fishing port with a history that extends back to the Classical Era. The Moors first occupied this area in 716 and there are ruins of a wealthy Roman villa located slightly inland from the present village. Although an earthquake destroyed most of the traditional Moorish village in 1755, you can still see remains of Alvor's history in places such as the 16th century Igreja Matriz with its beautiful Manueline arches and pillars. The charm of the old town with its narrow cobbled streets leading down to the harbour on the lagoon of the river estuary still remains.

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of Alva. Afterward, some free time is made available to explore the village at your leisure.

Quinta Dos Vales

Next, re-board the coach and drive to Quinta dos Vales for a guided walking tour of the property, its sculpture garden and vineyards. From vine to bottle, the Quinta dos Vales wine philosophy is based on quality, as opposed to quantity. This may be the reason Quinta dos Vales have very quickly become one of the leading wine producers in the upcoming Algarvean wine market. Proof of their success is in the number of medals and awards, over 100 since 2008. Following your tour, proceed to the well-preserved Tasting Room of the Manor House for a tasting of the award-winning red, white and rose wines produced here, accompanied by a splendid selection of Portuguese specialties.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Lagos

Silves

Upon arrival, take a brief walk uphill to the Archaeological Museum. Built on the site of a 19th century residence where the water reservoir was discovered, this became the centrepiece of the museum. In an excellent state of preservation, it dates back to the Almohade period (12th - 13th centuries) and made out of Silves sandstone it is around 20 metres (22 yards) in depth. It is considered an example unique to Portugal as it has a helix staircase with three windows to ensure easier access to the water. These are features rare to Arab architecture.

Next, take a brief walk to the Moorish Castle, the highlight of Silves. Most of the massive walls and the Gothic Cathedral built by Alfonso X of Castile are still intact. Below the remains of the castle is an impressive underground water reservoir that serves the town to this day.

Some free time is made available to explore the area before re-boarding your coach for the drive back to the pier.
