Silversea Expedition Cruises To Herradura

Herradura

Flora and fauna draw many people to Coast Rica and Herradura provides access to two natural gems. Herradura is a coastal town evolving into a tourist destination. Nearby are Carara National Park with an incredible biodiversity of plants and wildlife, and Pura Vida Gardens with its spectacular floral attractions. What makes Carara National Park special is that it protects a transition zone between high rainfall tropical rainforest and tropical dry forest. Combined with altitudinal variation and river wetlands, this creates a wide variety of habitats for different plants and animals. View more

For example, 400 species of birds have been seen in the Park—a huge number. Not all are seen each visit but perhaps you may spot outstanding birds like motmots and trogons in the trees, or the Giant Tinamou walking on the ground. Everyone wants to see a Scarlet Macaw. White-faced Capuchin monkeys and Mantled Howler Monkeys can be active in the trees. Carara comes from the Indian word for crocodile and large specimens of the American Crocodile can be seen here (safely). At the other end of the size scale are colourful poison dart frogs. Pura Vida translates to ‘pure life’ but in Costa Rica it has become a common expression for enjoying life. Pura Vida Gardens reflects that joy of living. High on the mountains near Herradura, the Gardens present an abundance of botanical splendours. Trails lead visitors past waterfalls and amongst 400 varieties of flowers and lush tropical plants from Costa Rica and beyond. Pura Vida!

Excursions in Herradura

Carara National Park & Crocodile Observation

Costa Rica boasts more than 900 species of birds (including a high number of regional endemics) in an extremely small area. It is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet thanks to its position between North and South America. On this tour you will spend the morning exploring the trails of the Carara National Park, a boundary between tropical dry and humid forest.

Carara's main attraction for most visitors is its wildlife with its star being the Scarlet Macaw. These large, raucous members of the parrot family add a bright splash of primary colors to the overall green of the rain forest, although at times it is amazing how difficult they can be to see in a leafy tree. It is estimated that about 150 of these blatant birds feed and nest in the reserve. When not brooding eggs or young, they roost in mangroves several kilometers away.

The reserve's notable birds also include Hoffmann's Woodpecker, Orange-collared Manakin, Panama Flycatcher and Black-hooded Antshrike. Look for Zone-tailed Hawk, Gray-chested Dove, Long-billed Hermit, Purple-crowned Fairy, Blue-throated Goldentail, Baird's Trogon, Long-tailed and Tawny-winged Woodcreeper, Dusky and Chestnut-backed Antbird, Dot-winged Antwren, Spectacled Antpitta, Black-faced Antthrush, Golden-crowned Spadebill, Greenish Elaenia, Slate-headed Tody-flycatcher, Northern Bentbill, Rose-throated Becard, Rufous-breasted, Black-bellied and Riverside Wrens, and Western Tanager.

Before returning to the ship a stop in the bridge over the Tárcoles River, will give you the opportunity to observe an immense population of crocodiles that live just several meters below the bridge; making this a great photo opportunity.

Pura Vida Gardens

Pura Vida Gardens and Waterfalls has been named the No.1 garden in Latin America by Integrated Conservation Research Group and the No.1 garden in Central America by the Tropical Sierra Foundation. Your expert local guide will lead you on a 2-hour nature walk through manicured walkways pointing out spectacular flora, fauna, waterfalls and views of the Pacific. In this garden, thousands of flowers have been added as well as several varieties of orchids, not only from Costa Rica but also, from all over the world.

Once you are done with your walking tour, enjoy a fruit buffet at the main restaurant, guaranteed to be the most delicious and fresh fruits you've even had!

Start your 20 minute drive back to the ship.

Tropical Forest Horseback Riding & Waterfalls

Take a short 15-minute drive to your stable and meet your transportation for the day, a medium-sized Criollo horse. Once you are set up, your expert local guide will lead you through farms to get you up close with nature, as you start ascending through the rainforest. Once inside the rainforest you will have a chance to see some great wildlife such as toucans, macaws and maybe even monkeys.

You will discover nature at its best in a private, exclusive 80-acre property, where you will also enjoy your own waterfall. Upon arrival at the swimming pool area, your bilingual guide will set you up with fresh fruit and water giving you time to relax and enjoy the waterfalls or the natural slide.

Head back to the stable to meet your coach.
