Silversea Luxury Cruises To AALBORG

AALBORG

Denmark’s fourth largest city comes with what Danes do best – Viking landscapes, modernist architecture, superb local food and lots (and lots) of good beer. Starting with number one, visitors to Aalborg will need to experience the strange otherworldliness that is Lindolm Hoje. One of Scandinavia’s best preserved Viking burial sites, the impressive site was covered over by a sand dune in around 1000 AD, thus preserving the stone markings. View more

Archaeologists from the National Museum began a proper excavation of the site in 1889 but it wasn’t until 1958 that the site’s potential was fully realised. Widely considered be the most notable of ancient landmarks in Denmark, no visit to Aalborg is complete without a visit here. History lovers will want to continue their tour of this pretty Danish town by not missing out on Voergaard Castle - one of the best preserved renaissance castles in Denmark. The castle houses an extensive and unique collection of European art and furniture, including works by Goya, Rubens, Raphael and El Greco, together with treasures from the personal belongings of Napoleon 1, Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette. If you prefer your landscapes more urban than historical, then not to be overlooked is Aalborg’s architecture. Think a Jon Utzon (the man behind the Sydney Opera House) cultural centre, one of the best concert halls in Europe and a repurposed power plant, and you have culture galore at your fingertips. If all that has made you hungry then expect a gastronomic voyage with anything from fine dining to a covered street food market. Washed down by a locally produced beer – of course! Aalborg is home to six microbreweries so visitors are spoilt for choice.

Excursions in AALBORG

Aalborg City Highlights

This tour will take you to meet the "Aalborgenser" (citizens of Aalborg) as well as their lovely city.

Historical town center, Walking tour

Leaving the pier you will shortly be in the heart of Aalborg. You guide will take you on a stroll, passing some of the city's landmarks, such as Jens Bangs Stonehouse from 1624, which is Aalborg best-preserved historic building and Budolfi Cathedral, dating back to around 1400. The stroll will conclude with an inside visit, to the vaulted rooms of The Monastery of The Holy Ghost.

The allotment garden

Leaving city center we will pass the former "Aalborg Spritfabrik" (liquor distillery) from 1881, before we will arrive to something typical Danish, The allotment garden. Here you will meet Helen, the owner, and have a change to see her lovely place. During the visit you will be able to taste the lovely Aalborg Aquavit.

Gug Church

Gug Church is in the southern outskirts of Aalborg. This remarkable and modern church was designed by architects Inger & Johannes Exner in 1972 and brings many of a surprise to the visitor. The rostrum is made from newspapers, the altar is made from concrete plus much more.

Top floor of "Hvide Hus"

Back on the coach, we wil drive to the top floor of "Hvide Hus". Raised above the skyline of Aalborg, you get to try the traditional Danish specialty: Pastry. Enjoy the tasty Danish with a cup of coffee of tea, while enjoying the spectacular view of Aalborg from above, with all its diversity and of course the lovely waterfront with a peek to the Aalborg Royal Cruise Berth.

A panoramic drive of approx. 25 minutes will take you back to pier.

Era of the Vikings

Aalborg is Denmark's 4th largest city - a twin city sprawled on both sides of the Limfjord Sound which connects it to the open ocean 25 km away. Aalborg was founded by Vikings in the late 900's and prospered on fishing and the land and sea trade going across and upon the Limfjorden. Board a motor coach on the pier to begin this Viking journey.

Fyrkat,Fyrkat Ring Fortress

Drive for approx. 1 hour through the historic and idyllic countryside to reach your first stop; a recreation of a Viking farmstead depicts everyday life for Viking farmers. The farm is a reconstruction of an actual farm found near Jelling-the hometown of Harald Bluetooth. During summer season, the farmstead is populated with local volunteer enthusiasts who dress in Viking garb and perform various household chores and cultural traditions, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the world of Vikings.

Visit one of the oldest so-called Ring Fortresses built in Denmark around the year 980 AD, where we enjoy a short glass of mead.

Lindholm Hoje

Continue the journey across the bridge for approx. 1 hour over the Limfjorden to reach the ancient Viking site of Lindholm Hoje - one of the most important ancient monuments in Denmark.

The burial site has 700 graves in stone settings and a settlement dating from the Late Iron Age and the Viking era. Follow your Viking expert guide close up to the burial site, where history becomes alive.

Afterwards, explore the onsite museum, which contains a fascinating exhibition about the settlement on the area or take a change to pick-up a real Viking Souvenir or Viking artifact.

After your visit here, return to the ship.

Fjordland Bike

Denmark is known as a bike friendly country and bicycles are both a sustainable means of transportation and part of the local lifestyle. We now invite you to experience Aalborg on two wheels, like the locals, on a beautiful and enjoyable guided bike ride along the fjord. Get close to both the history of Aalborg and Denmark and find out more about the Danish way of living on this charming bike ride, which also includes an outdoors refreshment stop.

Ride along the harbor

The ride along the harbor front takes you past two of Aalborg's pride and local juggernauts during the industrial era; C.W Obels Tobacco factory, one of the area's largest factories and also the Danish liquor factory and the producer of the world-famous schnapps, Red Aalborg Aquavit. None of them are in use these days and the area is undergoing a transformation to become Aalborg's new modern city, called Cloud City after the 30-meter-high artwork by the same name, made by the Argentinian artist Tomás Saracenos.

Vestre Fjord Park, Embark on the M/S Egholm Ferry, Ride along the harbor

Experience a brand-new recreation area in Aalborg. RIde through the Vestre Fjord Park, an outdoor place for locals and guests, meant for swimming, relaxing and socializing. The area recently won a special price for its creative architecture and its interaction with the surrounding nature. In the middle of the Limfjord sits the beautiful island, Egholm.

Enjoy the short ferry ride across the water and bike to the nearby public lawn where we'll make a refreshment stop and re-fuel before we start to make our way back to the ship.

Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse & Lønstrup Village

This scenic tour will take you on a magnificent drive where you will learn about the strong influence of the natural forces in Northern Jutland and experience the real Danish small-town charm up close.

Enjoy the scenic drive of approx.1 hour towards your first stop, Rubjerg Knude, a place that dramatically illustrates the powerful and unforgiving forces of nature that characterizes this region.

Rubjerg Knude lighthouse

The Rubjerg Knude lighthouse was built in 1900 on top of a 60 meters coastal slope, approx. 200 meters from the sea. As coastal erosion tore away at the slope, sand blew up and formed a massive dune that eventually covered the lighthouse building. Today, only the tower of the lighthouse is visible over the dunes. Meanwhile, the coast has eroded to only a couple of meters from the lighthouse and experts believe that the lighthouse will vanish into the sea within the next few years unless moved away from the coastline.

Don't miss the opportunity to experience one of Denmark's most beautiful sites, before it is too late.

Transfer from parking lot to the lighthouse by tractor pulled wagon and follow your guide to a leisurely stroll in the mighty sand dunes or climb the steps to the top of the old lighthouse.

Lønstrup village, coffee break at the Den Blå Café,stroll in the village

Your next stop after a short drive is the village of Lønstrup, a former fishing village, today a charming pearl located right by the North Sea. The village is a popular holiday venue for artists, arts and craftsmen, actors and composers whom trough times have contributed to the 'artistic touch' throughout the village.

Enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet treat at Den Blå Café, located in Lønstrup's old cinema building before continuing on a casual stroll down the main road of Lønstrup Village, scattered with glass blowers, potters, jewelry artists and small galleries.

During your free time you also have the chance to take the short walk down to the beach, where the local fishing cotters generally are lined up.
