Explore the seaside beauty of Kotor and legend of the Our Lady of the Rock during a private classical concert outing to this renowned islet and church.
Kotor, Kotor Bay, Perast, Seafront Promenade
Depart the pier for the short drive along picturesque Kotor Bay en route to Perast. Upon arrival, take a guided stroll along the scenic seafront promenade of this small and beautiful Baroque town. Along the way, learn about the history of the Our Lady of the Rocks.
Our Lady of the Rocks History
The peculiar fact about the island is that it is almost entirely manmade. It began as a pile of rocks, and, according to legend, two fishermen discovered an image of Virgin Mary there on 22 July 1452. A tiny Orthodox chapel was then built on the site. In the 1600s, Venetians took over the region of Boka and city of Perast. In 1630, they built a Catholic chapel on the place of the original Orthodox one. The Venetians decided to further expand the island by piling rocks from the mainland and sinking the old ships, a tradition that remains to this day. Every 22nd of July at sunset, citizens of Perast take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, a custom known as 'fasinada'. Most of the present-day church was erected after the great Earthquake of 1667, when the original sanctuary was destroyed.
