Silversea Expedition Cruises À SANTANDER

Northern Spain might not have the same allure as the Mediterranean end of the country, yet as every traveller knows, often the best places are those that are the least known. Enter Santander. With heritage hailing from the prehistoric, Roman and Middle ages, suffice to say that Santander’s roots stretch very far back. As one of Spain’s more important ports during the New World trading era, Santander enjoyed great wealth during the Middle Ages. View more

King Alfonso 13th (1886-1941) made the city his summer residence, bringing about a further economic boom and laying the foundations for modern Santander: a popular summer resort that enjoys one of the most beautiful bay in Spain, a fantastic art and cultural hub (don’t miss the Centro Botin) and a great lust for la vida. Tragically, a two-day fire in 1941 destroyed much of the city, including almost all the medieval heritage. Thus, Santander is today a city of two faces. One: an elegant seaside resort with at least six urban beaches, fabulous restaurants and all the fun in the sun you can muster. The other: a city with 15,000-year-old prehistoric roots that are visible in the cave paintings at Altamira or Puente Viesgo. If travelling the 30-minutes to see the real things seems too far, make sure you head to the fabulous Prehistory and Archaeology Museum of Cantabria, for extensive displays that take you on an interactive journey through time. Alternatively, make like a local and head to El Sardinero beach for a boho beach vibe that rivals Barcelona.

Excursions depuis SANTANDER

Bilbao's Guggenheim

Explore the history, art and architecture of Bilbao during this picturesque excursion to the Guggenheim Museum.

Scenic Drive

Depart the pier in Santander for the scenic, approximately 1.15-1.5-hour drive to Bilbao, through Northern Spain's many different landscapes. Arrive in Bilbao; continue down the city's main thoroughfare, Gran Via, which reflects Bilbao's 19th-century mining and industrial prosperity.

Guggenheim Museum

Upon arrival in the heart of the city, proceed for a visit to the Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art. Built by renowned architect Frank O. Gehry, this masterpiece in flowing titanium and limestone reflects Bilbao's heritage with its suggestion of maritime shapes and sails. The building is covered with over 35,000 titanium tiles and pieces of glass strategically placed to catch the natural light. After your guided tour, some free time is provided to explore the museum at your leisure, before commencing the approximately 1.5 hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, and is suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair, able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility. Tour sequence may vary.

Village of Santillana del Mar

Departing from the pier, enjoy a short panoramic drive through Santander, before the scenic 45 minute drive to Santillana del Mar.

Santillana del Mar

A picturesque town, renowned for it's medieval architecture which preserves the atmosphere of the past and is now protected as a national monument. With its old mansions flaunting their coats of arms, Santillana - gives a unique picture of the way of life of the old country nobility of Spain.

The town grew up in the fifth century around the Monasterio de Santa Juliana and was granted its municipal charter in the 13th century. Two centuries later, with the creation of the marquisate of Santillana, many noble families moved to the town and built the palaces and mansions which give the town its special character. Santillana is also known as the fictional birthplace of Gil Blas, hero of the picaresque novel "Gil Blas de Santillane" by the 18th century French writer Alain-René Lesage.

There is an old saying that Santillana del Mar is The Town of Three Lies, since it is neither a Saint (Santo), nor flat (llana) and has no sea (Mar) as implied by the town's name. However, the name actually derives from Santa Juliana (or Santa Illana) whose remains are in the kept in the Colegiata, a Romanesque church and former Benedictine monastery.

Enjoy some free time to wonder on own and finish your visit with some tapas & wine at the Parador of Santillana, built in the style of a Cantabria manor house before the drive back to the pier.

Please Note: This tour involves walking over uneven cobble stone streets. Recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
