Tampolo on the east coast of Madagascar lies adjacent to the island’s largest protected area known as the Masoala National Park. The massive park encompasses 2,300 square kilometers (over 1400 miles square) of rainforest and 100 square kilometers (62 square miles) of marine parks. It was established in 1997 to preserve the unique ecosystem comprising coastal rainforest, flooded forests, marsh and mangroves. The forests are filled with rare, endemic species and reach down to a shoreline of virtually unexplored golden beaches. View more
The biodiversity is so high that scientists working in the National Park have found new species of chameleons, geckos, frogs, butterflies and fish. Masoala is also home to the Madagascar Serpent Eagle, perhaps the world’s rarest bird of prey. In addition, ten species of lemurs, brightly colored mantella frogs, the greater hedgehog tenrec, the ring-tailed mongoose and all manner of extraordinary chameleons can found within the National Park.
