Silversea Expedition Cruises Nach SAN ANDRES ISLAND

SAN ANDRES ISLAND

The first thing that you should know about San Andres is that it is tiny. At only eight miles long and a mile wide (or 22 m2), it would take just one hour to drive around the island. The second thing you should know is that it is beautiful. Palm treed dotted, ringed by coral reefs and sandy beaches, San Andres is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a diver’s paradise and a National Park. And the third thing you should know is that San Andres is a duty free zone, so shopping is plentiful and inexpensive. The Island is almost 500 miles north of the Colombian mainland but geographically much closer to Jamaica and Nicaragua than Colombia. This island’s proximity to Central America means it was considered a strategic spot during the 16th-19th centuries. Despite Christopher Columbus allegedly visiting the island on his fourth voyage, the first official recording of San Andres is on Spanish maps in 1527, although the island quickly passed to the Dutch for a short while before becoming part of the British Empire in the 17th century. Spanish govern followed and the island did not become Colombian until the early 20th century. San Andres’ wealthy history makes for an eclectic mix of culture and language, with local Creole dialect being a mix of olde-English, Spanish and African (and even a bit of pirate buccaneer thrown in!). The cultural mix is everywhere: from the reggae/calypso/salsa music that spills out from the bars and café to the traditional colonial architecture.

San Andres Beach Break

Relax and unwind amidst the tropical splendour of San Andrés Island during this picturesque, half-day excursion to the Coco Plum Beach Resort.

San Andrés Island and San Luis Area

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 35-minute drive through the San Luis area, a traditional island neighbourhood, en route to the Coco Plum Beach Resort. This beautiful seaside resort is located on San Andrés Island, a ten-square-mile (about 26-square-kilometre) Colombian island in the Caribbean Sea, just off the coast of Nicaragua. This UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve is home to a diverse ecosystem of coral reefs, geysers, groves and cays, and ideal for swimming, diving, snorkelling and exploring.

Coco Plum Resort

The Coco Plum Beach Resort features beautiful, white-sand beaches that contrast magnificently with the blue-and-green colours of the Caribbean Sea. Upon arrival, you can enjoy the resort's amenities, soak up the tropical sun, take a stroll on the beach and/or swim in the inviting, crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean. Two (2) complimentary drinks per person are included (bottled water, soft drinks or beer). At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach for the approximately 35-minute drive back to the pier.

San Andres Island Exploration

Explore the splendid natural beauty, history and local lifestyle of Columbia's most renowned island during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Hoyo Soplador (Blowhole)

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 35-minute drive to see the pride-and-joy of the islanders, the hoyo soplador (blowhole). This natural phenomenon is very much dependant on sea conditions. It is produced by a series of subterranean tunnels and crevices in the coral reefs that meet and come together just offshore. At high tide, when a wave comes in through the tunnels with sufficient force, the compressed air and water in the tunnels come rushing out of the hole.

San Luis Area, La Loma and Old Baptist Church

Next, re-board your coach and head to the San Luis area, a traditional island neighbourhood and big tourist attraction with beautiful, white-sand beaches that contrasts magnificently with the blue-and-green colours of the Caribbean Sea. Leaving San Luis, re-board your coach and continue on to La Loma (The Hill). Here, a visit is made to the oldest Baptist Church in the Americas and most representative monument on the Island. The church dates back to 1846, and the chapel was built in 1896. Many Baptists from around the world come here to meditate and pay homage.

Morgan's Cave, Customs Museum and Coco Plum Hotel

Your tour continues with a visit to Morgan's Cave. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour leading down the famous labyrinth that opens onto a pristine beach, which has remained almost completely undisturbed because of its inaccessibility. Afterward, re-board your coach and proceed for a brief stop at the Customs Museum, followed by a refreshing drink at the Coco Plum Hotel. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.
