Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach RETHYMNON (Island Of Crete)

RETHYMNON (Island Of Crete)

A romantic arrival, below honey-coloured Venetian fortifications, welcomes you to the historic heart of Rethymnon. Sandwiched between the sprawling city of Heraklion and the pretty old town of Chania, Rethymnon offers history and gorgeous swathes of wide sandy beaches. Delve into the area's heritage, beauty and mythology - surrounded by legendary caves where Zeus is said to have lived, monasteries that perch on mountain slopes, and gorges that slice through dramatic island scenery. View more

Hours slide past at the beautiful Venetian harbour, where coffee cups are cradled and conversations linger in the sun, as occasional fishing boats bob by. The 1830-40 era lighthouse sparkles in the sunshine nearby, while the overlooking 16th-century fortress is a stunning, fortified highlight. Towering minarets point to the Ottoman influence, among the Venetian flourishes. Rethymnon is one of Crete’s prettiest places, and wandering the old town, soaking in the charm, is a day well spent. Stop off at ivy-tangled cafes in hidden courtyards, and admire colourful, ornate doorways. Wander to the sparkling water of Rimondi fountain, which has quenched the thirst of locals since 1626. To the east, Rethymno Beach unravels with well-maintained facilities and plenty of room to relax or swim in the warm Aegean’s embrace. Episkopi Beach is another leisurely option unwinding to the west. Outside of Rethymnon, farms cultivate olives and grapes on the sunned slopes - best enjoyed with freshly baked bread and a selection of sheep’s cheese. A splash of local raki – a moreish brandy shot - will also go down a treat. Or, dig deep into Crete’s rich archaeological past and Minoan history at Knossos’s ancient city, and the world-class Heraklion’s Archaeological Museum.

Episkopi Beach Break

Relax and unwind on the beautiful northern coast of Crete during this picturesque, half-day excursion to Episkopi Beach.

Panoramic Views & Episkopi Beach

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Episkopi Beach, located approximately 8.7 miles (about 14 kilometres) west of Rethymnon in a fertile valley with lowlands. Episkopi Beach is named after the nearby village of Episkopi, located approximately 1.24 miles (about two kilometres) to the south. Upon arrival, you have approximately three hours to relax, unwind, and enjoy the sand and sun.

Sunbathing, Beachcombing, Swimming, Aegean Sea

Episkopi Beach is well-organized, and in the western part of the beach you can find areas with lifeguards, showers, changing rooms, umbrellas, snack bars, water sports, etc. However, given its expansive length, Episkopi also offers quieter spots, especially in the easternmost part of the beach, next to Petres Bridge. During your visit, you can sunbathe, marvel at the panoramic coastal views, take a stroll on the beach and/or swim in the inviting waters of the crystal-clear Aegean Sea. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of activity and a minimal amount of walking for approximately 33 yards (about 30 metres), at times over sandy surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. Walking and swimming at Episkopi Beach is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility; however it is not wheelchair accessible. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up with beach or water shoes, and bring sun protection, a towel, bottled water and local currency for purchases from the ship. Sunbeds, umbrellas, and food, drink and souvenir purchases are at the expense of each guest. The tour sequence may vary. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions.

Island Jeep Adventure

Explore the history, lifestyles, traditions and cuisine of the Cretan people during this scenic and informative sightseeing excursion.

Milopotamos Villages, Anogia Village, Halepa Monastery, Mountain and Valley Views

Depart the pier for the scenic drive southwest. Pass through the traditional villages of Milopotamos, and stop for a visit to Anogia Village. From here, resume driving through areas with dense vegetation, fresh aromas and breath-taking panoramic vistas. The amazing fields and views continue until you reach the historic Halepa Monastery, formerly used as a refuge for Cretan rebels during civil wars. The unique view from the monastery, from the highest mountaintops of Crete to the farming valley below, offers wonderful photo opportunities.

Shepherd's Hut Visit, Cheese-Making, Raki and Cretan Cheese-Tasting

Next, your off-road route continues up to the 'mitato' (shepherd's hut); en route, look for eagles and wild goats. Upon arrival, meet the shepherd, learn all about the local lifestyle and daily activities, and participate in the cheese-making process. Following your visit, enjoy a shot of 'raki' and fresh Cretan cheese with your host.

Axos Village, Traditional Local Tavern, Lunch, Cretan Cuisine

Following your visit, head to the village of Axos. Upon arrival, proceed for a lunch of Cretan cuisine at a traditional local 'taverna'. After lunch, commence the approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier.

The ride may be rough at times, and guests will experience bumpy, jerking motions and uphill driving along narrow, winding roads. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck and/or back problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair; guests must be able to get in/out of the Jeep without assistance. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the fantastic ruins of the ancient palace complex, which served as the administrative and religious centres for the entire region. The restoration of the palace complex was undertaken by Sir Arthur Evans. Although criticized by some for its modernity, the restoration enables visitors to both visualize the palace as it was and understand its labyrinthine complexity. Highlights of your tour of the palace complex include the living quarters of the king, queen and members of the royal court, rooms for state occasions, theatre area, storerooms, and potters' workshops.

Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Next, your tour continues with a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. It is one of the largest and most important museums in Greece, and among the most important museums in Europe. The museum houses representative artefacts from every period of Cretan pre-history and history, which spans 5,500 years from Neolithic to Roman times. The singularly most important Minoan Collection features unique examples of Minoan art, many of them true masterpieces.

Arolithos Village and Lunch

Following your museum visit, re-board your coach and proceed for a Greek lunch in Arolithos. This traditional Cretan village is located just 6.8 miles (11 kilometres) from Heraklion, along the old national road connecting Heraklion with Rethymnon. Built on the slope of a mountain amidst the pristine Cretan landscape, Arolithos Village evokes the simplicity and beauty of a bygone era. After lunch, take a guided stroll through the village. It features an innovative array of environmentally-friendly methods for traditional and modern cultivation and breeding. The estate, a replica of 17th-century lodge, features a traditional olive press, flour watermill, wine press and a giant vat for grape crushing. Following your bread tasting, take a guided stroll to the watermill and threshing area. See the millstones utilised to produce flour, and antique milling and baking tools on display, then head over to the wine press and 'raki' cauldron, or 'rakokazano'. See the vat where the grapes are tread in the autumn, and the raki still that produces Crete's famous 'tsikoudia'. Every time you enter a local house, you are offered raki and 'meze'.

Mini-Zoo, Cretan Goats, Goat-Milking, Cheese Tasting, Chapel of St. Nicholas, Farm Shop

Next, walk to the mini-zoo for a look at unique species of local animals, including the famous 'kri kri', the wild Cretan goat. Leaving the zoo, your guide takes a goat to the centre of the village square, and milks it. The fresh goat's milk is utilised to produce goat's milk cheese, which you can sample with coarse salt. From here, return to the farm square for visits to the Chapel of St. Nicholas and Farm Shop, where you can browse a wide array of Agreco organic products available for sale. Included are organic olive oil, thyme honey, exceptional wines, fine raki, homemade jam, herbs, pure beauty products, and golden-roasted rusks and peanuts, along with gifts and memorabilia.

Pergola, Vineyard, Olive Grove and Sea Views, Cretan Cheese Pie Lesson and Tasting, Lunch

When local villagers want a quick, tasty lunch, they make 'sfougato'. Observe how this delicious dish is made with our free-range farm eggs. It takes years of experience to make 'myzithropitakia' or Cretan cheese pies; however, a quick interactive lesson helps you learn how to make the filling, roll out the pastry, and fill and decorate the pies.
