Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach PORT OF SPAIN

The capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain is big, bold and unashamedly brash. A Caribbean melting pot of beautiful beaches and big business, this island has more to offer than just palm trees and rum punch. A buzzing city with a thriving social scene, an eclectic bunch of restaurants ranging from traditional Caribbean fare of rice and peas, plantain and dumpling to more sophisticated Trinidadian fine dining can all be found douwntown. While the Carnival, which takes place on Ash Wednesday every year, is by far the most important event in the festival calendar there are many other things to keep the tourist here busy. The International Waterfront Centre, the National Academy for Performing Arts, the Savannah (a large park in the centre of the city) and the Royal Botanic Gardens (established in 1818, these are one of the oldest gardens in the Caribbean and include 700 trees of which 13% are indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago) are well worth a visit.

From the Savannah area radiate many of the most important streets, and around it are several buildings of historical and architectural interest, including the President’s House, which stands in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens; Whitehall, which houses the office of the prime minister; the house of the Roman Catholic archbishop of Port of Spain; the Knowsley Building, which accommodates some government ministries; All Saints’ Church (Anglican); and the neo-Renaissance Red House, rebuilt in 1906, which contains the Parliament and government offices. There are also Muslim and Hindu houses of worship in the city.

Despite its somewhat shady reputation, Trinidad is a generally safe place and provided that day trippers are sensible there would be no reason to feel in any danger. The locals are incredibly friendly so do take your time getting to know a few and you will be pleasantly surprised!

Asa Wright Nature Centre

Start the tour from Port of Spain travelling east by, passing villages and towns set against the backdrop of a scenic Blanchisseuse mountain road, which offers a picturesque drive through tropical rain forest, cocoa, citrus and coffee plantations to the Asa Wright Nature Centre nestled in the Aripo Valley. Asa Wright is a microcosm of bird, insect, butterfly and plant life, which you will experiences through a conducted tour of the walkways with an expert naturalist guide. For those who prefer a relaxing day, one can relax in the cosy comfort of the estate house and admire the view from the verandah, where several species of birds can be seen at the feeders.

Please Notes: This tour requires an extended amount of walking and it is not recommended for the guests with limited mobility and who utilise a wheelchair.

Caroni Nature Sanctuary

The Caroni Nature Sanctuary is a mangrove swamp covering an area of 40 square miles at Trinidad's North West Coast. After 30 minute drive from Port of Spain board a large flat-bottomed boat and slowly travel along the beautiful peaceful waterways and lagoons admiring the bizarre beauty of the landscape and a variety of birds and other wildlife. The most astounding among these birds is the Scarlet Ibis, a large bright red bird feeding and nesting here. This tour is world renowned among ornithologists as it offers the observer an opportunity to see this rare protected bird with very little effort. After this relaxing boat ride return to the main landing and make your way to Port of Spain.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and the boat. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair-accessible. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Gasparee Caves Adventure

Following a short drive to historic Chaguaramas disembark at the boat yard in Chaguaramas and board a pirogue to the Gaspar Grande island where you will commence a slow walk for approximately 20 minutes to the entrance of the Gasparee Cave - a subterranean system which is 90ft deep and half an acre in size. Arriving at the caves, descend through the smaller of two sinkholes to explore this natural wonder - which is filled with fascinating stalagmites, stalactites, flow stones, pillars, ribbons and fringed curtains, and other Limestone features, with names such as Pulpit Pipe Organ, Lovers, Dinosaur Head and others. Inside the cave is a saline pool, 30ft in diameter, its water level fluctuating with the tides, and is home to a few forms of marine life. Natural light fills the cave through a huge sinkhole above the pool, and fills the cave with a heavenly aura. You will then return to the boats for a short ride back to the mainland to board the bus for the port.

Please Notes: This tour is not recommended for the inactive individual. The short walk - 20 minute - to the Cave though on concrete pathway, is a continuous uphill climb - about 25-degree incline. This is followed by a descent into the cave - about 100 steps down and back up.

Kayaking in the Caroni Wetland

After a 30-minute drive, arrive at the Caroni Wetland, a 40 square miles mangrove swamp at Trinidad's North West Coast. Go over a briefing by the guide, board the kayak and slowly travel along the beautiful peaceful waterways and lagoons admiring the bizarre beauty of the landscape. This tour gives you the opportunity of kayaking through the mangrove waterways and open lakes, offering peaceful setting of lush tropical mangrove and a variety of birds and other wildlife. Keep a watchful eye for the astounding birds, the Scarlet Ibis. Your kayak guide would point out to you the way the mangroves grow and other marine life such as the four-eyed fish that lives in this area of Trinidad. The almost surrealistic beauty of this famous nature resort will amaze you. This tour is a must for visitors with an interest in conservation and the protection of the environment and likes natural surroundings.
