A rugged Mediterranean gem, arising out of the rich blue haze, Mallorca is a Spanish island of cuisine, culture, and sun-gorged beaches. Cafes and bars wait close to the sweeping coastline, where you can enjoy strong espressos to kick start the day, or splashes of red Majorcan wines to round it off. Bicycles trundle up and down the promenade, which invites you to wander in the morning sunshine beside the waves. Dominated by the indefatigable form of Santa María cathedral, which looms over the city and coastline, Palma de Mallorca is drenched in history and culture. The labyrinth of the old town is a cobbled haven, which bustles with dripping ice creams and sun-lashed squares. Settle to try the island’s superb cuisine, and savour local ingredients with an exceptional depth of flavour. Something about the sunshine here makes tomatoes extra sharp and delicious, while the seafood is consistently juicy and plump. The creation of the mighty cathedral, Le Seu, began in 1229 and was eventually concluded in 1601. A perfect encapsulation of Palma de Mallorca’s blend of the historic and the contemporary, even Gaudi lent his hand to it, and the interior features a spectacular modernist take on the New Testament from artist Miquel Barcelo, which is painted across the chapel’s walls. The splendid Royal Palace of La Almudaina fortress stands nearby, a left-behind Moorish footprint of square towers and Arabic archways that now serves as an official summer residence for the King of Spain.

Indulge your senses with the fresh air, great outdoors and scenic beauty of Palma during this memorable bicycle tour through the historic Old Town. Together with your English speaking guide, discover all of the "must see" spots in a fun, safe, insightful and most important, eco-friendly way. Learn of the history, the traditions and of the present of this fascinating city.

Palma de Mallorca

Once ashore, meet your guide, receive your safety briefing, bicycle and helmet, then follow the dedicated bicycle lane along the bay and into the city. Your route proceeds for approximately 100 yards (about 91 meters) on top of the old city wall before entering the small and shady alleyways of the Old Town.

En route, discover churches, small monasteries and old aristocrat's mansions featuring cozy patios and enchanting small plazas. Along the way, your guide offers interesting commentary about your surroundings, and points out interesting sights.

Halfway through the ride, a refreshment stop is made at a local bar before continuing on your bicycle tour, which concludes back at the pier.

Unveil the mystery of Mallorcan pearls during this half-day journey to the renowned Caves of Drach, and a subterranean classical concert at one of the world's largest underwater lakes. The caves have formed by water being forced through the entrance from the Mediterranean Sea, and some researchers think the formation may date back to the Miocene. There is an underground lake situated in the caves called Martel Lake.

Porto Cristo, Caves of Drach

Depart the pier for the approximately one-hour drive to the island's interior, passing through the beautiful historic town of Porto Cristo, one of the island's oldest harbours. Arrive to the Caves of Drach, or 'Cuevas del Drach', located near Porto Cristo. Perhaps as famous as the pearls, the caves were believed to have been discovered in the 12th century. In 1929, a visitor's entrance was built at the caves, and in 1935, the caves' interior was artistically illuminated for the first time. Today, the caves offer a surreal experience to visitors strolling through their ancient rooms. Dramatic lighting highlights the grottoes and silhouettes of immense stalagmites and stalactites.

During your walking tour inside the cave, see formations with names like 'Snow Mountain', 'The Ruined Castle', and 'Diana's Baths' en route to the shore of Lake Martel, one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world. Here, a short concert of classical pieces is accompanied by the interplay of shadows and light against the water.

Scenic drive, Pearl factory

The excursion continues with a stop to the Pearl factory. Here you will have time to browse during a visit to Majorica, the local world-known pearl factory and showroom. The return motorcoach ride to the ship is across the island's fertile plains, passing through many local picturesque farming communities and very typical windmills.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking, with 120 steps to negotiate in the caves. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. No photography or video is permitted in the caves.
