Silversea Luxury Cruises À VIS

Arrival in Croatia’s tiny island Vis is cinematographic. After a passing by a series of small islands, you arrive at a harbour lined with creamy white houses and perhaps the clearest water you’re likely to find this side of the Adriatic. As you stroll around the narrow streets of Kut, the harbour’s oldest and most beautiful part, you’ll find that these same houses are adorned with bougainvillea, courtyards and tiny jetties. You’ll also find an island that, despite the tourism boom of the rest of Croatia, has remained exactly as it was 40 years ago. The feeling of yesteryear on Vis is not just wishful make believe. The island was designated as a military base under former socialist president Tito, who froze development for more than 40 years, allowing farming and fishing to remain the dominant activities. The island may be just two hours by ferry to Split (and is one of the farthest from the mainland), but it is light years from the hordes of tourists that shuffle through the bigger port every day. Instead, on Vis, you’ll find an island for those in the know who want a quiet getaway. If the island looks familiar, that’s because it is. It was used as the setting for Mama Mia 2, which speaks volumes on how pretty Vis is. While the island’s incredible history, archaeological museum and 17th century churches will no doubt keep scholars happy, there is really nothing better to do on Vis than find a secluded spot (there are many), take a dip in the achingly clear waters and relax the day away.
