Silversea Expedition Cruises À Sudureyri

Sudureyri is a typical small fishing village in Iceland’s Westfjords at the entrance of Sugandafjord. Unlike most other fishing villages that date back hundreds of years, Sudureyri was only started in the early 20th century and has some 270 inhabitants. As the Sugandafjord is surrounded by high mountains, the only way to safely reach Sudureyri used to be by boat. View more

Since the village has been connected to the outside world by tunnel (opened only in 1996) it has been visited by those interested in angling and fishing for cod and halibut in the fjord and open water. Just east of the village is the Lagoon, an area that has been dammed off. Cod has been released into the lagoon and visitors are encouraged to feed the fish -this actually is considered the village’s main attraction. The cod can easily return to open waters via a pipe place under the dyke’s road, but many seem to like being fed.

Excursions depuis Sudureyri

Seafood trail

Take an educational walking tour of the eco-conscious village of Suðureyri, where the locals have embraced an intriguing approach to food. Meet your guide outside the village church and walk to a local fish processing plant for a series of seafood tastings not soon forgotten, not only for the freshness but also for this place's unique focus on sustainability.

The inhabitants of the Westfjords have often had to fight for survival in an unforgiving landscape, due to isolation caused by blocked mountain roads in winter, destructive avalanches, or the decline in fish populations in its waters. Learn what drives the people of these small villages dotting the coast to fight incessantly to keep their communities afloat and save them from the fate of abandonment. This enlightening tour gives an insight into how the ingenuity of the villagers has contributed to their small communities.

In Suðureyri, stop at various places to enjoy delicious tastes of local produce and meet the local retailers, producers and innovators. The local fishing boats are speedboats, which allow fishermen to quickly motor out to sea and promptly return with a fresh, high-quality catch. The speed and efficiency is such that the local catch is sold in Europe just 36 hours later. The fishermen strive to practice sustainable, environmentally friendly fishing with the goal of sustaining their own future and that of their children.

Enjoy free time to browse the village before returning to the ship.
