Silversea Luxury Cruises À SHIP COVE

SHIP COVE

Northeast of Picton, on the western shore of Queen Charlotte Sound and surrounded by bays, coves, capes and islands that carry names recalling early European exploration of New Zealand, Ship Cove was the only place in New Zealand to be visited by Captain Cook on each of his three Pacific voyages. He spent a total of 170 days at or around Ship Cove during five visits, and it was from nearby Motuara that Cook proclaimed British sovereignty over South Island in 1770. View more

Ship Cove became Captain Cook’s headquarter where vegetable gardens were planted and the ship’s pigs held in pens. A secure anchorage with access to timber for repair, freshwater for the crew and good fishing grounds permitted Cook to have the ships repaired and provisioned, and gave his crew the possibility to regain strength after long stretches at sea. In the early 19th century Ship Cove was also visited by Russian and French expeditions. In 1896 Ship Cove became New Zealand’s first historic reserve and monuments to honor Captain Cook were erected in 1913 and 1920. More recently the site has received interpretation panels that also outline the importance of the site to the local Maori. Today it is a scenic reserve and the starting point of the 4-day Queen Charlotte Track.
