Silversea Luxury Cruises À SANTAREM

SANTAREM

If you are looking for an authentic taste of rainforest culture, then look no further than Santarem. As one of Brazil’s oldest settlements Santarem holds many secrets. Located almost equidistant between Manaus and Belem, Santarem lies 500 miles upriver from the Atlantic. The little city is found at the confluence of the Amazon and Tapajós rivers and this “meeting of the rivers” phenomenon, where the crystal clear waters of the Rio Tapajos flow into the murky brown of the Amazon without merging is one of Santarem’s biggest pulls. The two stripes of colour flow comfortably side by side for many miles before combining. Climb up the hill from the waterfront in order to experience the best views. The Portuguese colonised the region in 1621 and many relics of the city’s colonial past remain. The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady Conceicao dates from around this time as does the nearby Old Town Hall building, which also houses many artefacts from the pre-Portuguese era. The Sacred Arts Museum has about 1,000 pieces spanning four centuries. However, a trip to the Amazon would not be complete without experiencing the flora and fauna, so make a beeline for the Tapajós National Forest, about an hour away. The huge (over 600,000 hectares) protected forest is home to a great deal of wildlife including protected species such as white-bellied spider monkeys, giant anteaters, jaguars and giant armadillo. Among the brazil nut and rubber trees you’ll find the endangered green-thighed parrot and red-necked aracari.

Excursions depuis SANTAREM

Bosque Tapajós Hike

Experience the natural beauty of the Brazilian Amazon on-foot during this picturesque, hiking excursion in the Tapajós National Forest.

Brazilian Amazon

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to the Tapajós National Forest, a section of the Brazilian Amazon that is a major resource of tropical hardwoods. En route, travel along Route 163, the Santarém-Cuiabá Highway, which is the only way to reach southern Brazil by road.

Tapajós National Forest

The protected Tapajós National Forest spans an area of 1,482,660 acres (600,011 hectares). Upon arrival, begin your guided, 1.5-hour forest hike. Along the way, explore the abundant flora and fauna of this beautiful forest, and discover diverse tree species that include the Brazil nut and rubber trees. At the conclusion of your excursion, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of driving and walking over bumpy, uneven terrain, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck and/or back problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The coaches used on this tour are air-cooled (there is no A/C). Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable trousers and long-sleeved shirts with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and insect repellent from the ship.

Exploring Maica by Boat

Discover Santarém from a unique new perspective during this picturesque cruise along the waterways of the Tapajós and Amazon Rivers.

Depart the pier in Santarém aboard a boat for a scenic river tour.

Meeting of the Waters

As you cruise down-river, encounter an unusual phenomenon called the 'Meeting of the Waters', where the mighty Amazon and Tapajós rivers merge.

Maica

Next, proceed to the Maica area, a natural outlet of the Amazon River. The advantage of this area is a much smaller stream, making it easier to see the sights during your 90-minute boat-ride through the floodplain. The lush landscape reflects the natural beauty of the Amazon Basin, and offers splendid vistas of local bird species and the occasional freshwater dolphin. Before returning to Santarém, a stop is made for piranha fishing. If you opt not to fish, you can relax on board and take in the soothing sights and sounds of the forest.

Your tour concludes with an approximate 70-minute transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and is suitable for guests with limited mobility; however the boat cannot accommodate guests confined to a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight cotton clothing with long trousers, sun protection and insect repellent. Additionally, it is recommended that guests bring a towel from the ship. Mineral water is served throughout the tour.

Highlights of Santarem

The scenic beauty and historic landmarks of Santarém are yours to discover during this picturesque, half-day tour of the city.

Depart the pier for the drive into Santarém, and commence your sightseeing tour.

Santarém Waterfront

Begin your tour with a drive along the waterfront. Since boats are the chief mode of transportation in the Amazon, you will see cargo, produce and passenger vessels in various shapes and conditions. Proceeding toward the town center, a short stop will be made at the cathedral.

Sacred Art Museum

Next, visit this small museum which displays approximately 1,000 pieces in four sectors. Sacred images of the last 4 centuries; City themes by local artists; A long-term exposure facing history history of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of immaculate Conception, and photographs of the decades 1920 to 1950.

Meeting of the Waters

Then, continue on to a lookout point from where you can observe the Meeting of the Waters. This natural phenomenon of the muddy Amazon and the blue waters of the Rio Tapajos flowing side by side define the character of the city.

Observe local activities in the narrow streets of the old center before taking a short drive into the countryside.

Casa da Farinha

A visit to this old manioc flour factory turned farm will introduce you to a variety of native trees, including rubber trees. A short demonstration shows you how latex is extracted. Afterwards, head back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with approximately 20 steps to negotiate at the cathedral. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The motor coaches available in this port are not air conditioned. We recommend guests dress in lightweight cotton clothing, wear sun protection and comfortable walking shoes. A minimum number of guests per guide is required for operation of this tour. The order of the sites visited may vary and the duration of the tour might be affected by traffic.
