Silversea Luxury Cruises À SAN SEBASTIAN (La Gomera)

SAN SEBASTIAN (La Gomera)

Unspoiled, green and lush, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has many secrets to reveal. A Canary Island capital like no other, life is lived at a refreshingly lackadaisical pace here. Wander between San Sebastian's faded pastel hues, which spill across the coastline, and bathe in this seaside city's warm sunshine, as waves splash onto sunny beaches. A sleepy capital city, travellers have been resting, relaxing and rejuvenating here for centuries – including Christopher Columbus, whose presence remains in museums dedicated to his visit. He called in to restock water supplies while voyaging to discover the new world. Silbo, an extraordinary whistling language, used to communicate over great distances, adds even more cultural fascination to this luscious island’s mountain scenery, crafts and traditions. Head to beaches like Playa de San Sebastian to revel in the black volcanic sand that the Canaries are known for, and Playa de la Cueva, where you can look across to Tenerife’s soaring cone. Or explore this island's own natural wonders, at the verdant terraced landscapes of La Gomera’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Garajonay National Park. Trek through the trails of Laurisilva forests, laurel plants and heather trees. La Laguna Grande is another elegant location of colourful natural beauty, where island legends of witchcraft swirl. Discover ceramic traditions - handed down through generations - at El Cercado, where glazed jugs used to store chestnuts are moulded by hand. Squeeze more local charms into your bulging suitcase along San Sebastian’s pretty Calle Real street - where everything from palm honey to woven baskets and local snacks are up for grabs. Or settle into city squares, where life plays out in palm tree shade and café gatherings.

Excursions depuis SAN SEBASTIAN (La Gomera)

Garajonay National Park & Flavors of La Gomera

This extensive tour around the north of La Gomera offers a wide range of very different experiences. Stop at some of the most spectacular lookouts on the island, listen to the unique Silbo Gomero whistled language, hike through the lush greenery of Garajonay National Park, visit a dairy farm and sample local cheeses and wine.

Hermigua lookout, Aguló lookout

Depart the pier for a 40-minute scenic coach ride, stopping first at a lookout over Hermigua to admire the lush subtropical valley nestling below. Re-board the coach and proceed toward the town of Agulo, one of the most beautiful villages of the Canary Islands, lying in its surrounding banana tree belt. From a lookout above Agulo admire more spectacular views over the north coast including the remains of its famous giant davit crane.

Garajonay National Park, Silbo Gomero, Hike through Forest, Los Roques lookout, San Sebastián lookout, Cheesemaker Farm Visit

Disembark the coach at Garajonay Park's visitor center to enjoy a coffee break and listen to a demonstration of Silbo Gomero, the unique whistled speech indigenous to La Gomera. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Garajonay National Park owes its name to the tale of ill-fated lovers Princess Gara of Gomera and Prince Jonay of Tenerife. Legend has it that when their families forbade their marriage, they ran away and threw themselves off the island's highest peak. Next, set off on a 3-km hike through the park's dense unspoilt vegetation with its many plant species often wreathed in a sea of mist that gives the forest a magical touch. From Los Roques viewpoint admire the majestic volcanic rock outcrops towering over the luxuriant vegetation below. Head back to the outskirts of San Sebastián to visit a renowned dairy farm specializing in traditional cheeses hand-made from she-goat and ewe milk. Take a guided tour of the farm and sample an assortment of their cheeses, almogrote paste and wrinkly potatoes with local wines. Return to the coach for the short drive back to the pier.

Garajonay National Park & its Sorroundings

Experience an amazing range of sensations on this 5-½ hour guided coach tour. Marvel at some of the most spectacular lookouts on the island, watch traditional pottery-making, listen to the unique Silbo Gomero whistled language and sample typical liquors and palm tree honey.

Los Roques Lookout, Garajonay National Park

Depart the pier for a 40-minute coach ride to the center of La Gomera with its National Park and mountain villages. Stop at Los Roques scenic volcanic lookout. Continue to Garajonay National Park, where you leave the coach for a coffee break and 20-minute optional trail walk through the park's lush, almost virgin vegetation.

Valle Gran Rey Lookout, El Cercado Pottery, Silbo Gomero

Re-board the coach and head west to the Valle Gran Rey lookout before turning north to the hamlet of El Cercado nestling in the terraced landscape of La Gomera's highlands. Admire potters applying ancient techniques handed down over generations since early man. A key feature of their craftsmanship is that items are still molded without a potter's wheel, and the clay is a mixture of mud and sand finished with red ocher, all materials found in these mountains. Transfer to a restaurant to hear a demonstration of Silbo Gomero, the unique whistled speech indigenous to La Gomera. Developed over centuries by shepherds to communicate across the island's deep ravines and narrow valleys, this UNESCO-listed Intangible Cultural Heritage is the only articulate whistled language in the world still spoken by hundreds of locals. Next, enjoy some tapas with a tasting of 2 liquors and miel de palma, a honey-like syrup exclusive to La Gomera handmade from syrup extracted from the palm trees which abound in this area.

La Fortaleza, Agulo & Hermigua Lookouts

Re-board the coach and proceed toward the town of Agulo, known as the green balcony thanks to the surrounding banana tree belt. From La Fortaleza admire red-hued ridges in the foreground and the magnificent craggy mountain panorama beyond. Agulo's viewpoint offers spectacular views over the north coast. Lastly, stop at Hermigua lookout to admire the lush subtropical valley sheltering below before sitting back to enjoy the half-hour drive back to the pier.

Kayaking along Alajero Coast

This 5½-hour activity tour starts with a scenic drive to Playa de Santiago, where you set off in a kayak along the coast. Stop at a heavenly beach to rest, enjoy the sun, swim and snorkel.

Panoramic Drive to Playa de Santiago, Guided Kayak Tour, Snorkeling and Swim

Start your day with a 45-minute scenic coach trip to Playa de Santiago, one of the biggest beaches on the sunnier south of Gomera Island. After a safety briefing and getting kitted out, set off from the beach in tandem kayaks accompanied by a support boat as well as your kayak guide.

Admire the coastline with its small coves and beaches as you follow the coast from Playa de Santiago. Stop after an hour's paddling and land on a heavenly beach to relax in the sun, swim, walk around and/or snorkel (highly recommended) to look for marine life in the glorious Atlantic waters. After this change of pace and a snack get ready to head back by kayak while continuing to feast your eyes on everything surrounding you: the sea, sand, trees and sun reflecting off the water and creating fabulous dappled light effects. Relax with these memories on the coach ride back to the ship.

La Gomera Panoramic Highlights Tour

Take advantage of this 4-hour scenic family-friendly tour to admire the landscapes from a number of La Gomera's most spectacular lookouts, complemented by insider knowledge from a local guide. To enrich the range of experiences the tour is rounded off with visits to a local gourmet pastry and cake shop and an excellent interpretation center which provides a wealth of fascinating information into the island's heritage and more besides.

Valle de Hermigua, Cookie & Pastry Shop, Castellana lookout, Juego de Bolas Visitor Center, Vallehermoso lookout, Morro de Agando lookout

Depart the pier for the half-hour drive to the Hermigua Valley, where you visit a bakery selling traditional local cookies and other sweet temptations. Next, stop at the Castellana lookout.

Heading towards Agulo then along Las Rosas road, enter the Juego de Bolas visitor center. Amid beautiful gardens containing a fine microcosm of native Canarian flora, the center includes an ethnographic museum with several exhibition rooms illustrating the island's cultural heritage, geology and climate, as well as various craft workshops. Enjoy some free time here before returning to the coach to head along the beautiful La Palmita road to two more of La Gomera's viewpoints offering views of the island's contrasting inland scenery.

From Vallehermoso viewpoint you overlook a fertile basin with extensive juniper groves. The Morro de Agando observation deck places you in the middle of three protected natural areas - Garajonay National Park, Los Roques Natural Monument and the Benchijigua Integral Nature Reserve. Spectacular as they all are, the most stunning has to be Roque de Agando. This stone giant standing 1,246 meters above sea level is an ancient volcanic chimney that has been exposed by millions of years of erosion. Commit its image to memory during the drive back to the pier.
