Silversea Luxury Cruises À Prince Edward and Marion Islands

Part of South Africa’s Western Cape Province, the archipelago is 1750 kilometers southeast of Port Elizabeth and a little less than half way to Antarctica. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current hits the islands and the Roaring Forties make life on the archipelago difficult –gale force winds are common on 150 days a year. Slightly more than 100 years had to pass between Prince Edward Island and Marion Island first having been seen by Dutch in the mid-17th century and the next visits by famous French and English expeditions. Captain Cook gave them the name Prince Edward Islands, but in the 19th century sealers named the southern and larger of the two islands Marion Island (after Marion du Fresne). More than 100 small, reddish volcanic cones dot Marion Island with the last eruption noticed in 2004. South Africa annexed the two islands in 1947/48 and has since 1948 conducted meteorological studies maintaining a year-round station on Marion Island’s northeastern coast. Research now also includes environmental and biological studies. Both islands have been declared Special Nature Reserves as up to five million seabirds, penguins, southern elephant seals and fur seals use the islands to breed and moult. Vegetation is generally sparse and mostly restricted to grasses, mosses and lichens.
