Coal Mines Historic Site, Guided Tour

Depart the pier for approximately 30-minute drive to the Coal Mines Historic Site, a little-known element of the great experiment in crime and punishment on which the Australian nation was founded. Along the way you will be filled with stories of the Tasman Peninsula penal settlements. Explore the ruins of houses, barracks, offices and dark, damp underground cells of those who once lived and worked at the Coal Mines, a place where the 'worst of the worst' convicts were sent for punishment. Gain insight into the danger of working in unstable mine shafts, or life in solitary confinement in dark, damp, cold underground cells.

Port Arthur Historic Site, Guided Walking Tour, 'Behind the Scene' Access

This exclusive tour includes a fascinating 'behind the scenes' of the Port Arthur Historic Site with one the conservation experts. Gain access to areas of the site not generally open to the public and visit the collection processing laboratory and see objects rediscovered by archaeologists. Discover how archaeology, science and horticulture have assisted in recreating the magnificent 19th Century Government garden and access significant historic artefacts currently not exhibited. Visit some of our more recent and large-scale conservation projects, including the Penitentiary and the Separate Prison. You will also be able to see where convicts were locked in cells, where they ate, slept and worked.


Free Time

After the guided walk, enjoy some free time to visit any of the 30 historic buildings and ruins, comb through the site's unique gift shop for souvenirs, or just wander and explore this unique World Heritage Site on your own.

Port Arthur 'Ghost' Walking Tour

Darkness falls, and Port Arthur's hidden side emerges. This is a different place after sunset, full of mystery and intrigue. Join a lantern-lit walking tour to experience the World Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site by night.

Follow your expert guide through some of Port Arthur's more infamous buildings and ruins, and listen to vivid stories of unexplained events that have baffled and alarmed convicts, free settlers, soldiers and visitors.

As the lantern light guides you through the darkness, and strange stories unfold, you will discover Port Arthur's secrets, and decide for yourself if the tales are true.

Port Arthur Helicopter Flight

Fly over the dramatic sea cliffs, Tasman Island and the Port Arthur Historic Site on this 20-minute scenic helicopter flight while your pilot provides stories and commentary of the area.

Transfer to the Helipad & Safety Briefing

Depart the pier for a brief transfer to the helipad. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the helicopter team and given a safety briefing to prepare for the flight. There are plenty of photo opportunities prior to take off from the lounge and outdoor waiting area.


Helicopter Flight

Once loaded by ground crew, headsets adorned and welcomed onboard by the pilot, the helicopter takes off and heads south to fly past the Port Arthur Historic Site and over the cruise ship anchored in Long Bay. You will see parts of the Three Capes Track and pass Crescent Bay - one of the Tasman Peninsula most pristine stretches of sand. Following the towering sea cliffs of Cape Pillar, the helicopter passes high over the Tasman Island and "The Blade" where the cliffs stretch more than 300 meters above the Southern Ocean. On the return to the helipad the flight will follow the same path in reverse - ensuring that guests on both sides of the helicopter get the same fantastic views.


Your tour concludes with a transfer back to the pier.

There are many unusual geological formations found in the Tasman National Park, a place of rugged beauty with some of the most stunning coastal scenery found anywhere in Australia.

Visit Tasman Arch, amazing natural rock formations and hear the soothing sound of the waves as it crashes onto the sturdy rock. Continue to the famous Blow Hole, another natural landmark for a great photo opportunity. Carved by persistent waves and coastal winds millions of years ago, Blow Hole amazes visitors with the sheer power of its spray rising up to the height of 10 m (33 ft) at high tide. Next, continues to Tessellated Pavement, an extraordinary rock formation resembling human-made pavement. Following your visit, drive through the Eaglehawk Neck, a narrow neck of road that connects the Tasman Peninsula with the rest of Tasmania which is famous during the prison's operational years with prison guards and vicious guard dogs as part of a security system.


The tour concludes back at the pier.
